We had a singleton baby born today. Thankfully Birch Hill’s Duchess is amazing and kept it warm enough for me to get it and bring it inside.

It’s dilute of course. 😂

Siamese sable senior Netherland Dwarf buck looking to hop.

Can be brought to Pasrba.

He’s 2.12 so over max weight. I really like him, I just don’t need 4 sable bucks.

PM me for details.

Someone asked us why we breed in the winter if it’s so difficult.

My answer is… for lots of reasons.

Netherland Dwarfs are hard in general. We’ve had everything from peanuts (a fatal double copy of the dwarfing gene), max factors, hippos, fetal giants, dystocias, etc.

Dwarfs don’t generally have large litters. Ours average 1-4. Then factor in your peanuts, etc and you could have zero viable babies. Maybe you get lucky and get 2-3. We’ve had several moms only raising one baby because out of 3, only one was viable. Maybe that one baby is a false dwarf, receiving no copy of the dwarf gene. This rabbit will most likely go over senior weight and not be able to be shown (there is great value in brood/false dwarfs, just not for the show tables generally. We have a few in our herd, however my true dwarfs mamas have no problem raising and having litters after their show careers).

With the Rex, my son and I show year round. Parker also raises rabbits to show and auction off at his county fair. He has to plan, much like for Nationals or Convention, how old he wants those rabbits to be in late July. That means he needs babies in December to early January for a nice, finished young senior rabbit.

Some of our best babies have been born in the dead of winter. And mid summer can be just as taxing, so it’s not just the cold that creates problems.

So, to ensure we have rabbits to raise, show, and better our herd, we choose to breed year round.

Is it difficult? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely!

Pictured is a REW baby that was shelved with the rest of its litter.

Thankful for all the great memories and friendships that 2024 brought.

Our first dwarf was born 1/1/24 and the next weren’t until June. In that short time, we’ve had a Best In Show, 2 Reserve In Shows (all open) as well as many BOB and BOSB in dwarfs (some which were our shaded lines!). Our first litter of Rex were also born on 1/1/24 and we’ve had several BOB and BOSB wins in open and youth Rex as well as Parker’s Best In Show at the fair!

Thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way this year as we started our Dwarf and Rex programs. We truly appreciate your time, energy, friendships, and the beautiful animals you’ve provided us with. ❤️

Wishing all our friends a happy and healthy 2025. 🎆

If you know, you know.

Nothing will wake you up at 5:30 am more quickly than seeing babies being born on the wire.

After stashing one cold baby in my bra and warming it up, we’ve got 5 babies out of GCH Covert’s Haiku (smoke pearl). She had half in the nestbox, half out of the nestbox, but thankfully I was outside right after she had them.

We will be shelving this litter in hopes of some more babies like our Woods Mill’s Fiddle (smoke pearl jr doe, 6 legs), as this was a repeat breeding.

My morning surprise!!

Greenwood Gem’s Olive (black otter) had 3 perfect babies! It was cold so I didn’t investigate them too much.

I was worried about breeding the dwarfs for juniors for the spring show season in this weather, but my moms are killing it!!

Let me tell you about this dog!!

Riesen, one of our dwarfs, and her babies are in my bedroom because she went off feed (she’s fine now).

Shenzi normally doesn’t sleep in my room. She likes the cold tile downstairs. So imagine my surprise when she slept in my room all night. It was weird.

Then, when I tried to get her out of the room, she would not leave the rabbit cage. So I went over to look and lo and behold a baby had come out of the nest box. She was there all night watching over that little baby!!

The baby is fine and Riesen was helping to keep it warm. But I’m so proud of my dog.

She really embodies everything I wanted and needed in a shepherd.

Good girl, Shenzi. 💜
