Sara has titled a variety of dogs in AKC obedience, rally, confirmation, retriever fieldwork (AKC, NAHRA, breed-specific), trick titles, and NACSW nose work. Sara’s students have titled in an even wider variety of venues including UKC obedience, rally, field, and scent work, AKC scent work, barn hunt, cooperative care certificates, and more.

Where has Sara and Decisive Moment been?!!?

2024 has been a tumultuous year. In May, it took a very unexpected turn.

I was hospitalized with a Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome (RCVS) event that resulted in a subarachnoid hemorrhage brain bleed. As far as brain bleeds go, it was a “good” brain bleed, and I did not need neurosurgery. The recovery has been long, non-linear, and sllooowwww for this fast-paced chick! I have been under doctors’ orders to nap, stay off screens, and rest my brain. That has been surprisingly difficult with caregiving for Mark, having our house for sale, and all of life’s other stressors.

To be honest, running Decisive Moment has been on the back burner. For that, I am sorry to my clients and potential clients and incredibly grateful for your patience. From now until October, I will continue to be in recovery mode. My main focus right now is being well rested and up to Muzzle Queen status for the APDT conference in mid-September. �

For the rest of 2024, I have set a schedule that I feel will set both my clients and me up for success.
📗 I will continue to see my existing private clients, but my books are closed to new clients until next year.
⭐️ I am offering a variety of group virtual classes: TOTAL Toenails, But First FUN! Cooperative Care Tricks and Choose Your Own Adventure.
💅🏻 I am offering my first Care with Consent Nail Professional Certification Program in October.

One of the great things about is seeing amazing speakers speak. I’ve known .yablon since she was in her KPA class. She has done a stellar job making Leash Skills for both dog and people accessible and successful!

I used to say that I was going to write to a book Leash Walking In Just Two Years. Those first two years for most puppy/adolescent dog folks can be rough, especially for polite leash skills. Kiki remembered that joke (yet not) and “made” me a “book” in her talk. 🥹

Her talk reminded me of hanging out in our friend Susan’s basement training with .bertilsson and We’d get so training nerdy together. There was so much of our time together distilled into her current work. It is an honor to Susan’s memory, friendship, and great training.

Great job .yablon I’m so glad I was able to be present.

From Breakfast Time to Brilliance!

Today, thanks to an awesome Team we learned that Cheerios fit on the end of an oral medication syringe. Bonus that Cheerios are on Penny’s and Georgie’s approved food lists and they both love them.

Nothing is better than creativity in action!

Penny was eating off the syringe in no time. 🤩

Care with Consent - It Takes a Village!!

Today Team Wally added the most important part of his Village a new Primary Veterinarian Dr Hooper at the amazing

Wally has a host of health issues, heart worm survivor, hip dysplasia, intestinal disease, cardiac disease, with a history of human and dog directed aggression. Needless to say all of that adds up to NOT being comfortable with veterinary visits!

Today was his establishing care visit at Brooklyn Yard Veterinary Hospital. To set Team Wally and the staff up for success we visited the clinic a number of times without interacting with the staff. He visited a number of rooms, ate lots of treats, and practiced his Care with Consent skills. We learned certain rooms were not great for him, due to his concerns about trucks. No big deal, that’s easy to accommodate!

With his pre-visit pharmaceuticals on board he was a rock star today! He solicited pets from Dr Hooper -YAY. He was comfortable with me doing some minor handling. He was comfortable in his muzzle. He politely said no thank you to wearing his cone and doing a side lay in the presence of new people. That’s just data on things we need to work on.

Next step is rabies vaccine. A little more training in clinic and I think we’ll be all set!

Thank you to Brooklyn Yard for being so understanding with our special needs dogs. I’m grateful for being part of Team Wally. Updates to come!

Every year I see this happen!

The first nice weekend day everybody who should or shouldn’t be walking their dog is out. I know that false spring is tempting but if you have a dog with big feelings, today is the best day to stay home.

The same also goes to say your dog that barked and lunged at things last fall did not magically get better during the winter ! 😉

Enjoy your false spring at home with the windows open doing some enrichment around the house! It is a great day to practice watching people and dogs go by at a distance on your front step or porch.

Yep, you read that right. Xfinity is out AGAIN!!!!

And the ice storm hasn't even started...

We'll see how our cell coverage holds up this time. Right now, I'm getting some work done with my phone, but it is limited and buffering, but better than earlier in the week.

Can't wait for mid-40s and rain!

Well, the internet is back to working at my house - YAY!!!

I am holding my breath, waiting for the next 24-ish hours since they are now calling for an ice storm...I'm trying hard to catch up on things from this weekend before I lose power or the internet again.

Paws crossed it stays on this time!

At least I got to play pickleball while the internet was out. 🥰

YIKES! We still have no internet and very sssllloooowwww cell connection. Nothing is happening business wise at Decisive Moment.

Example I couldn’t even download this image from Canva. I had to screenshot it. 🤦🏻‍♀️ So, I’ll be in touch via carrier pigeon if you have an appointment coming up.

Of course, this could change in an instant. Also, we are very grateful for power! We are warm and Mark’s elevator is working.

This Ken's Job is Ball, along with his part-time job "bouncer" of his apartment. He takes both jobs very seriously.

All joking aside, I want to give a shout-out to Team Luca. They are doing amazing with his concern around people in "his" apartment building, elevators, hallways, and soon even his apartment.

Once again, Portland, OR area Dog Pros stepped up and proved we have the best community. Luca was referred to us by when his concerns about strangers escalated. Team Luca has put the work in, and now it is time to take it the behavior modification to the next level. I called Wonder Puppy up and asked if we could work on skills at their facility with a trainer that Luca already likes, setting him up for success.

Team Luca crushed it! Not only did he work with Christina from Wonder Puppy, but he was able to work with me. That went so well that we were able to have Kira from Wonder Puppy work with him, too.

Next steps, transfer the skills to his apartment building!

🎉 Big News!!! 🎉 The Care with Consent Professional Certification is finally a reality. Want to learn more? Join us for a free webinar and Q&A on November 15.

This Professional Program is much beyond just a "certification." It is mentorship, community, and being a change-maker with cooperative care. It will be serious work and serious fun!

The Foundation Program is a ten-month program filled with live Zoom classes, recorded lectures, projects, training, learning, and growing.

This program has been a dream of mine since the summer of 2021. We lost Bueller that summer, and it hit harder than I could have imagined. He had so many struggles with veterinary care and offices. In those last few months, our Care with Consent training made a difficult time a bit easier.
🐾 I wanted to spread the word that this training matters for all stages of a dog's life!
🐾 I wanted to have trainers and behavior consultants understand the concepts at a deep level.
🐾 I wanted dogs with a history of aggressive behaviors to be welcomed into the program.
🐾 I wanted veterinary staff and groomers to be seen and feel safe - always.
🐾 I wanted certificants to leave the program with hands-on knowledge and ready to implement the training into their practices.

So, I have spent the last two years dreaming, tweaking, thinking, planning, and practicing. Now, the time has come to let the world in!

We have two toenail classes starting soon!

🐾 TOTAL Toenails class covers all types of nail care, from scratchboards (front, back, and dew claws) to cooperative nail trims. It is eight weeks of classes over ten weeks. We have built-in practice weeks. ALL types of dogs are welcome, from puppies to dogs with a history of aggression around nail care. Class starts November 14 at 7pm CT/5pm PT.

🎉 Confetti Club Class is a three-week class, every other week for six weeks. The class is open to anyone who has worked with me on nail care. Class is designed to give you continued support on your nail care journey and help set routine practice. Class starts November 14 at 5:30pm CT/3:30pm PT.

Due to Popular Demand - TOTAL Toenails class is being offered again in 2023!

Class starts on November 14 at 7pm Central/5pm Pacific Time. Class has built-in "skip" weeks. Weekly attendance is on November 14, 21, 28, December 5, 12, 19, and January 2 & 16.

Active Training/Coaching spots are limited to 6 (currently 5 available) and are $440. Self-Study spots are limited to 12 and are $275.

Dogs with all levels of comfort and discomfort with nail trims are welcome! Puppies to Senior Dogs are welcome. Your dog is never too young or too old to learn to be comfortable having their nails trimmed.

If your dog has a history of aggression with nail trims, we ask that they be comfortable wearing a muzzle.

Capturing Shake It Off

🔊Sound on I’ve been working on getting Lindy’s whole body shake off on cue, with capturing. Every time it looks like she’s going to shake it off, I give the cue “shake” and mark and reward when she does. Why would you want this on cue? Lots of reasons! When we’re kayaking I like to know when she might rock the yak. Best to avoid surprises, that end you up in the water! 😆 Look how awesome my @hurricanekayaks is - so steady even when she shakes! So worth the investment in a great boat that works perfectly for us as a team! What behaviors does your dog offer you want to get on cue? #kayakingdog #shakeitoff
