Finding Bogey This page is dedicated to finding an 8 year old redbone coonhound who ran away from her home in Fairfax VA on June 11, 2021. Call or text 703-596-9296 if seen.

Please do not chase, follow, or call her name. https://www.gofundme.com/f/finding-bogey About Bogey:

Bogey is a 9 year old Redbone Coonhound Mix. She is tan with floppy brown ears and black/grey around her muzzle and eyes. She has a very short smooth coat. She weighed about 47 pounds at the time she went missing. She has long legs and a lean athletic build. Her appearance may have changed somewha

t since she first ran away, though most people who have gotten a good look at her report her as looking like her pictures. How You Can Help

Store Annie’s number in your phone so you can call immediately if you think you might have seen her. Talk to your neighbors, especially those who might not use social media. Ask them to store the number in their phones. Volunteer to pass out flyers in your neighborhood, at your church or other gathering place. Message us for a printable flyer. Ask your HOA to be kind and leave signs up in the neighborhood. People need to know where to call if they do see her! Regularly check your RING or other security cameras for her. Extend the boundary to include a bigger area than just the front door. Send us a private message if you regularly feed outdoor cats/wildlife or know of someone who does. Depending on your location, we may want to set up a camera near your feeding station. FAQs

Q. How long has Bogey been missing? A. Bogey went missing on June 11, 2021. Q. Where does Bogey live? Where/how did she get lost? Bogey went missing from her home on Piney Branch Road in Fairfax VA. When going out for a late-night potty, the buckle on her collar failed and the collar came off. Unfortunately, her GPS collar was being charged at the time. She ran off into the night to eat cicadas. Why are there signs all over Fairfax county? Where has Bogey been? Bogey has covered an extremely large territory. We have had sightings that were confirmed by a professionally trained scent dog that have ranged from Fairfax Station, Lorton, Springfield, and Fairfax Station to the campus of GMU. Some of her sightings include sunning herself in a field near Lake Mercer; standing in someone’s breezeway in Crosspointe; on the Fairfax County Parkway near Hooes Road; sniffing around homes off Henderson Road and Hampton Road. Running through a neighborhood near Lake Braddock, and on the campus of GMU. Her known territory runs east/west from the Accotink Trail in Springfield to Fountainhead Regional Park and north/south from Rt. 29 in Fairfax to Lorton Road. The area is roughly 80 square miles. For most of the winter, Bogey was roaming back and forth between Springfield and Fountainhead Regional Park. More recent sightings have been closer to home including Burke, Lake Braddock, King's Park West and GMU. How did Bogey get all the way down to Lorton? We don’t know exactly how she got so far away. Our best guess is that a well-meaning person picked her up and brought her to the Lorton area thinking they would take her to a vet or shelter but she ran away from them. Have you contacted the shelter? Bogey’s owner Annie is a volunteer at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. They were notified immediately as were all the local shelters. Most of Team Bogey also volunteers at the FCAS. Who is helping to search for Bogey? Bogey has an awesome team of people working to help bring her home. Team Bogey is comprised of professional trackers, shelter and rescue volunteers, friends, and neighbors. We have even had several of our followers become active members of Team Bogey! Is Bogey friendly? Will she come if called? In her normal life, Bogey is friendly to people but can be reactive to dogs she does not know. Since she has been missing, she has been avoiding people. Everyone who has seen her says she has turned and gone into the woods whenever she has been spotted. We ask that you do NOT try to call out to her if you see her. The best thing to do is sit down, look away and crinkle a treat bag. If she is going to approach someone, it needs to be on her terms and that person will need to be VERY patient! There is a great video on "calming signals" on the website for the Missing Animal Response Network. Why is she so skittish? We do not know for certain what Bogey has gone through on this journey. It is quite possible that she went through something traumatic, such as being chased, that has caused her to avoid people. Many lost dogs go into survival mode and become feral within just a few days of being lost. To learn more about lost dog behavior, visit the Missing Animal Response Network

Q. Does Bogey like other dogs? Bogey had a bad experience at a dog park when she was young. She doesn't like to be approached by unknown dogs and is unlikely to come to another dog that she does not know. Where was the last sighting? We prefer that people not focus just on the last sighting as Bogey moves around a lot! We know that Bogey has moved as much as 4 miles in a single night. We must keep watch in all the areas where she has been because she could return at any time. Unfortunately, we have not had enough sightings to establish a pattern to her travels. How is she surviving? What is she eating? There is a surprising amount of food available to a dog as resourceful as Bogey. Lots of people feed wildlife or outdoor cats. She has been known to eat birdseed, horse or deer p**p. She has also been tracked going through neighborhoods on trash day. One person that saw her reported that she had something in her mouth that looked like a squirrel. Has anyone gotten a picture of her? So far no one has been quick enough to get a picture of Bogey. Many sightings were reported by people who were driving when they saw her. Others just saw a tan dog run into the woods. She has quickly run from anyone who has made eye contact or tried to call out to her. What do you mean by a "confirmed sighting." How do you know it was really her? When we get a sighting in a new area, we will bring out a tracker team with professionally trained scent dogs. If the tracking dog picks up Bogey's scent in the spot where someone reported seeing a tan dog running loose, then we feel confident enough in the sighting to label it "confirmed". What do the trackers do? Why have they not found Bogey? Trackers have dogs that are specially trained to follow the scent of a specific animal. They can help us to confirm if a sighting was Bogey, can follow her path and tell us where her scent is strong. Afterwards, we set up cameras with the goal of eventually setting a humane trap. It is rare for a tracker to actually see a lost dog. Only about 5% of tracks result in a "walk up sighting" where they actually see the animal during the track. They are usually starting a day or more behind, so for a dog who moves as much as Bogey does, it is unlikely that the tracker dog will catch up to her. If the tracker feels they are getting close, they will usually have to stop. Animals can sense when they are being followed and the trackers do not want to "push" a lost animal out of a safe place and into a busy road! Why don’t you want people to go out and look for her? Why don’t you give out specific sighting locations? When we get a sighting or track Bogey to a specific area, we set up trail cameras with the goal of eventually setting a humane trap. Extra people walking through the woods looking for her would be more likely to drive her away from our cameras thus delaying the process. Worse, she could be scared out of a safe area and into a busy road. We want to keep her safe! Have you set a humane trap? Trapping Bogey is one possible strategy. We have not been able to do so because she has not stayed in one area long enough to get her on camera. We cannot just set random traps in an area as large as Bogey's or we would trap fox, raccoons and other wildlife all night long. Have you considered using a drone? Team Bogey has explored the possibility of using drones with thermal imaging technology. We spoke to several drone operators in the past who were not hopeful. The majority of Bogey's territory is in restricted flight zones. We had a search and rescue drone operator apply for an exemption, but the FAA would not give approval to search for a dog. Without FAA approval, drones need to be within eyesight off the operator, so we would not be able to cover much of an area.

Public service announcement-
Team Bogey learned early on to beware of scammers. If you have lost a pet and post on social media or put up flyers (which is the best way to get sightings to help you find pet), you will be contacted by scammers asking for money or for you to text them a code or click on a link. If someone truly has your pet, they should be able to show you a new photo or video and be willing to meet you in public place. Few people will demand a reward and no professional trackers or drone operators will require payment in advance via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or gift card.

We have become aware of a circulating scam where pet owners are contacted by individuals falsely claiming to represent our shelter. These individuals state that we have the owner’s missing pet in our care and request money, allegedly for the pet’s immediate medical expenses. They may ask owners to send funds via platforms like Apple Pay or Venmo, while falsifying their caller ID to appear as though the call is coming from our shelter.

Rest assured, the Fairfax County Animal Shelter does not ask for funds over the phone or in advance of picking up a lost pet. If you receive any suspicious communications claiming to be from us, please do not hesitate to hang up and contact us directly.

Update June 30 - Drogon is SAFE and back with his family!

Please keep an eye out for a large black lab / Great Dane mix in the Burke area of Fairfax County. He escaped June 19 from pet sitter and is already in flight mode. Do not chase, follow, or approach him as he will run away. Stop and call 703-861-1810 or 703-691-2131 immediately. His family returned from vacation and is very worried about him. Sightings are crucial to reuniting him with them. He will be searching for food, water, and shelter due to the heat. Last confirmed seen near White Oaks Elementary/ Shiplett Blvd.

6/7/24 Update:
Yesterday was a crazy day, in a good way! Carmen and Kenny from Professional Pet Trackers came out to check the recent sighting. Two different dogs picked up scent in the Westmore/Fairfax Villa area! They also checked on a tip from one of our awesome followers and picked up her scent near a feral cat feeding station in the Lake Braddock area of Burke. Interesting fact...the one thing that a majority of sightings have in common is that that there are feral cat feeding stations nearby.
The good news is it seems our girl is still out there roaming. We just have to figure out how to either lure her home or get ahead of her. It feels like we are always a step or two behind. Or with Bogey, more like a few miles behind! Food is not going to do it. She's clearly finding plenty of food!
We have a camera near the new location in Lake Braddock. We would love to get a picture of her. If she does pass by here regularly, it would be amazing if we could establish some kind of pattern. It does seem that she regularly goes from Fairfax to the Lake Braddock area, but we don't get enough regular sightings to determine a route or a pattern.
We can't tell you enough how much we appreciate the support of the community and our followers! We continue to have hope that one day soon our girl will be home!
Please spread the word to friends and family, especially those who may not follow social media. Ask them to please call 703-596-9296 with any possible sightings or any info on feral cat feeding stations in the areas around the City of Fairfax, GMU and Burke.

We have had a number of possible sightings in the area of Pohick Road over the past few months. The tracking dogs did get fresh scent earlier this Fall, so we believe that Bogey continues to pass through this area.

We had a few more calls recently. The descriptions have varied from a healthy looking dog to a mangy dirty dog with a limp. Our trail cameras have picked up a coyote with severe mange. Much of it's fur is missing and it's ears do not stand up straight like a typical coyote. We believe that this is the animal that several people have reported as possibly being Bogey. We feel badly for this poor coyote, but are glad that it is not our girl in this bad shape.

The good news is that this morning we had a sighting in a similar area. The caller looked at the coyote pictures and said it was NOT the coyote. She saw a healthy looking dog with longer floppier ears.

We also had a few other calls from other areas including Newington Forest and Middle Run. Some were ruled out and a few are possibilities, but it was dark, so the sightings were not strong.

🍁Happy Thanksgiving! We had two possible sightings this week. One in the Newington Forest area; the other near Ollie Lane, north of Braddock Road. We certainly hope the second one was her, as that would mean she is back closer to home again!

We are thankful that our girl is still out there surviving, and for the support of the wonderful community! We never would have been able to keep up this search without all of your help. Thank you.

11/13/23 Update...We got a call yesterday from a woman who was quite confident that she saw Bogey crossing Pohick Road once again. The sighting was on November 2, but unfortunately the signs in the area had been taken down, so the lady didn't have the number to call until we put up new signs.
It is likely that Bogey continues to roam and that this is just one of many areas that she passes through every week or two. In the past she has moved from Pohick Road to Saratoga then on north to Braddock Road. Other times she has gone west from Pohick to Fountainhead. Ten days later, she could be anywhere!
We are continuously updating signs. It is a challenge to keep them up in such a big area. If you live in Bogey territory, please store our number so you can have it handy if you do see her! Please ask friends and neighbors to do the same. If you live in a high visibility location and would be willing to put a sign on your property, please let us know and we can have someone bring you one. As always, we are grateful to the wonderful community of people who continue to help with our efforts. We would never have been able to keep up the search without all of your help and support!

We follow lots of lost pet groups and inevitably someone suggest putting the litter box outside almost every time someone posts about a lost cat. If you follow lost pet groups, please read and share! Thank you!

Placing your cat's litter box outside when they going missing is nothing more than a myth. The MAR Network does not advocate this practice for many reasons.

New Sighting! 9/14/23
Just when we were starting to feel discouraged, the keen eyes of a nine year old girl picked up a skinny brown dog crossing Pohick Road near the power lines last night. As luck would have it, Carmen and Kenny Butler and their team of tracking dogs were in the area today. Two different scent dogs picked up Bogey's scent at the location where the girl saw the dog, so we are pretty confident that it was our girl! She was headed in the direction of Saratoga. The last time Bogey was in this area, she crossed the parkway and was seen near Hunter Village Parkway/Accotink Creek. Another time, she went from Saratoga to Lake Braddock. Our guess is that with as dry as it has been, she will stick close to either Pohick Creek or Accotink Creek as many of the smaller water sources have been running very low.
If you see a dog that looks like Bogey, please call immediately! 703-596-9296
If you see her and have a fenced yard, you could try to lure her in with a strong smelling food like wet cat food. If she sees you looking at her, she will run, so try to stay out of sight! Thank you to all of our followers for helping keep an eye out for our girl and a special thank you to the young girl who saw her last night. Because of you, our hope is renewed!

Also LOST in the Northern VA area

Brown lab/pittie mix with white patch on chest
10 year old neutered male
Possibly wearing two collars - one blue, one red
Went missing on Sept. 5, 2023 from Clifton VA

Last seen this morning (Sept. 13, 2023) in Fairfax Station
He appears to be following power lines. If sighted, please call or text ASAP. Because he's on the run, it's best not to approach or follow him as that might push him farther from home. You might to be able to lure him into fenced yard if grilling but right now, owners need to know where he's been and where he's going next.

Thank you for sharing and keeping an eye out for him!

8/5/23 Update: Just a reminder that our girl Bogey is still out there. It’s so hard to keep signs fresh with such a large territory. Additionally, Annie recently had a knee replacement and has not been able to get out as much. Fear not, she’s on the mend, and so she and Team Bogey will be working hard on refreshing signage. Doing so usually brings new sightings. We are grateful for those who have reached out to alert us about areas needing new signs. Remind your neighbors to save 703-596-9296 in their phones and call ASAP with any sighting information. Thank you!

06/28/2023 Update: Animal Protection Police followed up on sightings and found the Ridgeback in Lorton. She’s been returned to owner. Yay!

06/27/2023 Update: Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out to us about the dog in Lorton. It is not our girl, but we are so grateful for everyone looking out and thinking of us!

The good news is that we did have a different, possible sighting this morning. It was on Huntsman Blvd. The description fit and it was a typical sighting. The dog crossed the road and quickly disappeared into the woods. The location was close to the power lines that run from Lee Chapel up to Braddock Road. We believe Bogey uses these power lines as a major travel route, so anyone within a mile or two should be on the lookout.

Please remember not to try to approach Bogey, as she will run off. If you think you see her, the best thing to do would be try to lure her into a fenced area with some kind of smelly food, but stay out of her sight. And always call 703-596-9296 immediately with any possible sighting information. Thank you!

06/11/2023 Update: Today marks two years since Bogey ran away. No one, especially not Annie, fathomed we would still be trying to bring her home. But here we are.

On this day, Annie and Team Bogey are not giving up. We continue to focus on all the positives. We are still getting sightings. Fresh scent was detected just weeks ago. That tells us that our girl is still alive and roaming. So, we still have the most important thing...HOPE!

We also try to focus on the things for which we are grateful...the amazing people we had never met who offered help, joined Team Bogey and are now dear friends; Other lost dogs who have since been found in part because of Team Bogey's efforts; and you—our followers, who remind us about the power of community and perseverance. It is because of you that we know Bogey is close. It is because of you that we are confident we will bring Bogey home.
Thank you and please save this number in your phone as you never know when or where Bogey will make an appearance: 703-596-9296

05/23/2023 Update: Just in ➡️ New sighting this morning near the intersection of Sydenstricker and Hoos Rd! The caller got just a brief glimpse, but the location fits. Annie is in the area now.

Also, we received word of a Bogey sighting last night (05/22) off of the Parkway at Lee Chapel Rd. The caller got a good look and said Bogey looked healthy and that she was "on the move." Based on her normal distance of travel, some places to remain watchful for her today might be around Lake Braddock, Lake Mercer or the Pohick Stream Valley area. As always, if seen, do not approach. Call 703-596-9296 immediately with information. Thank you for your continued help and vigilance.

23/04/2023

One of the goals of this page has always been to help all lost dogs through helping to educate the public. With today being National Lost Dog Awareness Day, Annie and the Finding Bogey team wanted to share some information that could help Bogey and other lost dogs. This will be a long post, but we hope people will take the time to read and share this important information.

First, we’ll start with some general information about lost dog behavior and the normal trapping process. Then we will share some insights on the best ways to help Bogey in particular.

The biggest risk to a lost dog is being hit by a car. That’s the reason that so many lost dog posters say, “Do Not Chase”. When a dog makes the bad decision of running out into a road, it’s usually because someone is following them. When a dog goes missing, they will often go into fear or survival mode. They can become feral very quickly and will often run from all people, even their owners. Many lost dog owners don’t believe this until they see their own pet run away from them. So, if you see a loose dog, please do not chase, or even follow it. Instead, take a non-threatening position such as sitting or lying down and let the dog come to you on their terms.

Once a lost dog starts to overcome the initial flight response, they will normally settle in to a “den” area. This is usually a quiet place, away from people, where they can feel safe and sleep most of the day. They will venture out from the den area at night to look for food. Most will only go a mile or two before returning to their den area.

The typical process for capturing a lost dog who runs from people involves getting sightings, setting up feeding stations with trail cameras and eventually setting a trap. If there have been no sightings, a tracking dog can be helpful to get a general area of where to put signs to generate sightings and where to put cameras and feeding stations. Once a dog has been seen on camera eating from a feeding station, then a trap is set. This can often be a long process, sometimes taking days or weeks to get a dog to go into a trap.

Many people mistakenly think that the best way to recover a lost dog is to find their den area or where they are “hanging out.” Well-meaning people will go to sighting areas thinking that they are helping by walking/driving around looking. This increased traffic in an area ends up causing lost dogs to leave. This delays the search/trapping process. Lost dogs need to have their safe space if they are going to stay in an area. For a dog who has been lost for a long time, the search is not about finding and catching the dog or finding their hiding place. The process is about luring the dog either home or to cameras/traps.

Bogey is one of the small percentage of dogs known as an “extreme roamer” or “gypsy”. Extreme roamers can have vast territories and may never actually settle into a den. Instead, they move from place to place, finding food and shelter along the way. These are the hardest dogs to trap. In Bogey’s case, she is covering an area of roughly 80-100 square miles. She has been known to move over 5 miles in less than 12 hours. While we do have trail cameras in several places, she has never shown up on one.

So, how do we think we can bring Bogey home?

There are several scenarios in which we can see Bogey getting home. One of our trackers had a similar case many years ago. They tracked a gypsy hound dog for close to two years. Finally, the dog was lured into a fenced area by a quick-thinking person. Another possibility is that Bogey will follow the scent trails that her mom and sister Cassie have been leaving for her. We continue to walk home from sighting areas leaving bits of hair and other smells along the way.

How can you help?

• Store Bogey’s number 703-596-9296 in your phone and call immediately if you think you may have seen her. Do not attempt to call out, whistle or follow her. This will make her run off. If Annie can get there fast enough with Cassie, she may come to her sister.
• If you have a fenced area nearby, place some smelly food in the fenced area far away from the opening. Make a trail of drippings to lead her to the food. Put some on a tree or on the fence to get the smell up into the air. Make sure she does not see you and close the gate behind her when she is safely into the fenced area. Keep a can of wet cat food on hand just in case.
• If you live on a busy road, place a sign in your yard. One of our biggest challenges has been keeping the public aware that she is still out there!
• Ask your church, workplace, or other high visibility location to put a sign on their property or to pass out flyers.
• Continue to keep the conversation going and help educate others about what to do if they see a loose dog.

As always, thank you to all the kind people in the community who continue to support our search!

Today is National Lost Dog Awareness Day. Please share this video and help people remember that there are still many dogs missing in our area. Most “stray” dogs are really lost dogs! Thank you to Professional Pet Trackers for putting this video together.

Great News!!! Today Carmen and Kenny from Professional Pet Trackers came out to check the most recent sighting near the Saratoga Elementary School. Two different dogs got strong positives for scent. We feel quite confident that it was our girl!
Saratoga is the far southern end of her territory, but the way she moves, she could be anywhere from Fairfax to Fountainhead by now. We are just ecstatic to have confirmation that she is still out there surviving.
In the next few days, we will do a more detailed post about ways you can help. Thank you so much to everyone who continues to spread the word, call in sightings and keep the the positive energy going!

4/18 Update: We received word of a recent sighting near Elementary School. The person did not get a close look but the description fit our girl Bogey. She’s been tracked in that area before. We are guessing that continues to return there because there are lots of feral cat feeding stations. As you enjoy this glorious spring, please remain watchful and share this post with others. Thank you!

In addition to Bogey, please keep an eye out for Crosby who is still missing nearby.

Crosby is a 3 1/2 year old brown labradoodle with white chest. He weighs about 28 lbs and is microchipped.

Like any dog who has been on the run for a while, it's very important not to call, chase, or follow him because he might run farther away or go somewhere unsafe.

He got away from a pet sitter on Hagel Circle in Lorton VA at the beginning of the year. He has been sighted in several locations around I-95 in Lorton. Tracker has confirmed scent near Lorton VRE and areas around Old Bridge Road, Smoketown Road, and Minnieville Road.

Owner hasn't received any reports recently so it's possible Crosby was picked up or has moved to another area.

He may look different from the pictures depending on whether he's been loose and ungroomed or if he was taken home by someone else and groomed in a different style.

Not everyone knows that they are required by law to report found pets to local shelter or animal control. You don't necessarily have to bring pet in but you do have to try to find owner. Otherwise you could be stealing someone else's beloved pet. A reward is being offered for information leading to Crosby's safe return.

Please help us bring this little guy back to his family!

We had a couple of calls over the weekend. One was from some kids who said they saw a dog near the Target in Burke. I do get a lot of prank calls from kids, so I am not sure how credible this call was, but we are checking it out and trying to see if anyone else in that area saw the dog. The other was from a lady who saw a dog near the Springfield Country Club off Old Keene Mill Road. We are investigating this sighting as there was also another lost dog in the area over the weekend. We are trying to get more information about specifics and timing on the other dog to determine if this was the other dog or if it might have been Bogey.
