Saturday 15th November – Beaufort Hunt
Meet: Ivy Leaze, Acton Turville
Despite deep flooding on the roads around the Badminton Estate after Friday’s torrential rain, the hunt still chose to meet and wade through floodwater to hunt foxes.
We met up with friends from Bristol Hunt Saboteurs , Cirencester Illegal Hunt Watch and Reading Reading Hunt Saboteurs, so despite the conditions we had eyes on the hunt for most of the day.
They headed north from the meet into Goulter’s Gorse and Alderton Grove before spending a lot of time in Cranhill Wood. Groups of sabs were strategically positioned by the wood, ready to guide any fleeing wildlife to safety. The hounds killed and half-ate a pheasant, showing the huntsman has no control over them and that no bird or animal is exempt from being pulled apart by a hungry pack.
The huntsman moved north and the hounds rioted on a hare (which thankfully escaped) before going into cry on the scent of a fox that fled into Allen Grove Farm. The fox then ran for it's life from there towards Luckington. The hounds followed at speed, sprawling through the garden of a house being built near the primary school. Sabs were positioned north and south of the property, with one team assaulted on the public footpath as they witnessed hunt staff throwing hounds over a wall.
It’s at times like this that our drone is invaluable for keeping an eye on what the huntsman and hounds are doing. In this case it captured hunt staff whipping and picking up hounds to remove them from the garden. Thankfully, the fox had found a relatively safe place in an outbuilding. Had sabs not been there recording the trespassing it's likely the hunt would have tried to flush the fox again.
After a morning of chaos, the hunt swapped to their second horses at 1:30pm and headed north to draw coverts near Luckington Court and then Sopworth Break. Another fox was flushed from Sopworth, but a team of sabs was perfectly positioned to stop the hounds in their tracks using voice calls and see the fox to safety.
After drawing coverts north of the Badminton Deer Park, the hunt finally packed up as it was getting dark at around 4:30pm.
As you can see from the photos, drones are vital for capturing scenes that are trickier to capture on the ground. We are fundraising for a thermal drone to help us get better footage through tree cover and as the nights draw in. Please donate if you are able, or share our fundraiser link:
