National Pet Day on April 11th dedicates the day to those pets who may not always get the companionship and attention pets deserve. While loving our pets is something we do every day, the observance encourages helping out orphaned pet companions. It will improve their health and enhance their opportunities for adoption.

We need you!

Animal shelters across the country are approaching a crisis level in terms of the number of pets being given up. A shortage of workers and foster/host homes is making the crisis worse, and with shelters full, the euthanasia rate has climbed to a three-year high. We need your advocacy now more than ever. Please help us by using our group page to post resources for canines and owners in need.

But before you post, please remember:

Effective messaging can inform, educate, and inspire. Ineffective messaging, on the other hand, can turn people away, limiting or even crippling advocacy efforts and jeopardizing the welfare of the dogs who are counting on you. Please use these best practices.

Keep it positive.
People want to feel happy, not sad. Sad or disturbing photos of sick, injured and neglected pets (while perhaps necessary in certain contexts) generally do more harm than good. Many people out there are unwilling to get involved with animal welfare or even visit shelters simply because they may have only seen and heard is negative and depressing. To be effective advocates, it’s our job to show folks something new and change their minds. You can still communicate urgency without being negative or using upsetting messages and imagery to do it.

Imagery Focus
Sad or negative imagery has unintended consequences that can lead to fewer animals being saved. When promoting a specific dog in need, for example, focus on the pet’s personality rather than her circumstances. You want people to think about the future and consider who that pet could be as a member of their family, not who that pet was in the past.

Post with purpose.
Yes, saving lives is serious business. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have a good time while doing it! Respect the rules of online forums and update all posts as needed. Throw an adoption party for a dog who’s been in the shelter a long time, make a video and share the fun.

Merry Christmas.
