Frank has been actively seeking out scratches (and cheeky nibbles) every chance he gets.
Slow and steady wins the race! 🐢
He secretly loves attention 🥰
Frank has started initiating prolonged contact! Up until now he would come over for a quick nudge but yesterday he did this for about ten minutes until I moved away.
Teeny tiny baby steps with this sensitive guy ☺️
A certain pesky thoroughbred made this a lot harder than it needed to be 😂
Frankie believes this is the optimal method of hand feeding - putting the hand in his mouth kind of like a spoon.. I'm sure he'll work it out eventually..
Today, after a lengthy spell, Frankie was brought back into the yards for some handling.
As he is naturally very reactive, we have been taking him very slowly and building his trust.
Someone’s developing their personality
Besties!
Frankie the Wild Brumby Stallion is so gentle with the annoyingly cheeky weanling colt. I think they are going to be besties! 😍
A little bit from today’s session:
Over the past few days I’ve been spending a few minutes, multiple times a day working with Frankie so he understands that touch is okay. By removing the whip and stepping back when he reaches out and makes contact he learns that touch can be a safe thing for him. Initially I started rewarding him with his space the moment he touched the whip, then gradually I became slower in moving it away. As you can see, he is only comfortable with the whip near his face, not his body, but he’s very careful in his escape! After a minute he relaxed again and even started snoozing! (Unfortunately I didn’t get this on tape).
I cannot say enough good things about Frankie’s temperament! Here he is being as cool as a cucumber while new fence posts are being put in. He is currently in a yard next to my weanling colt and he sets the perfect example.
He is still not comfortable with anyone too close to him but he has started walking up to me when he sees me. Baby steps!
Here’s Frankie arriving on Sunday, May 29.
Other than the one instance when he was put in a cattle crush to be branded, microchipped, and checked over by a vet, he has had no physical contact with a human. As you can see, he is cautious but sensible. I’m so impressed with how he handled it all - I can’t wait to start working with this young stallion!
