It is over for Team Bravo on Dog Almighty, and at this time, subtitles won't make it any easier to describe this feeling. Along this journey, we have faced so many challenges, but none compared to the one of leaving my loved dogs behind when moving to NZ. Unfortunately, NZ doesn't accept dogs from overseas areas considered not rabies free, and Brazil sadly, is one of them. I would guess that among all the competitors I was the one with the biggest desire to win just because I would love so much to make it for my dogs back in Brazil. Maybe it is only me, too much passion, only a romantic Brazilian, but those dogs are my heroes!
Handling a powerful dog like Bravo is also another huge challenge and, honestly, I'm not sure how many people could do it. I have trained more than 1000 of different Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepherds, Cane Corsos, Mastiffs, Doggo Argentineans, Pit Bulls, Dutch Shepherds and others Malinois, but nothing was ever compared to what I found in Bravo. If one day, you have the opportunity to meet him in person, you will get it straight away. Remember, he is only 2 years old, barks like an old dog, acts like an old dog, looks like a mature dog, is confident like an old dog, but he is only a puppy still. When competing against dogs with 5, 9, 11 y.o., the most valuable thing is the time you have spent in your relationship with your dog, and I am glad that we might have a long road together ahead.
The Belgian Malinois is an amazing breed but it demands a very different way to be handled and trained from the other dogs, we coped very very well with the television environment even having to quickly adapt ourselves for that need. I couldn't be more proud of him, our last run on the doggy dome was a CLEAN run (if we don't take in account the seesaw balance, where never any dog with more than 10 kg has completed it). We even NEVER ever trained agility before, the only opportunity to practice those exercises was in the competition, and we were competing against the best agility dogs in the country.
The elimination challenge, weaves, typical agility exercise that Bravo has done less than 20 times in his lifetime, and there we were, against the unbeatable Kruze on agility courses. He might have done the weaving at least 1 million times in his life. I love that dog so much and I would love to have made the final against him, that would be epic, but an elimination round wasn't my plan.
Anyway, the title will be in good hands, in Team Kruze, we have Kruze, so many times Agility National Grand Champion, a mixture of drive and control at the right dose, a very experienced dog in competitions, but only unbeatable thanks to Hayley's handling. I love Kruze and I know that he loves me too, he was declared my favo dog during the competition. In Team Koru, we have Misha, what a trainer, so much learnt from her, a very clever and positive mind that we know from where Koru takes all those skills, definitely my favo trainer, so much pleasant watching them on course. In Team Coco, we have one of the most special person that I ever met, Scarlett, she added so much to our environmental, so much energy and good vibes, a great supportive friend, she might have been a Belgian Malinois is a past life (that is the best compliment that someone can have from me 🙂 ), all that talent makes Coco that special fluffy thing too. In Team Maizy, we don't miss anything actually, that dog just adapts herself so easily to new situations and can do whatever it is when that is clear for her.
Once I stepped out of the Doggydome it hurt so much. It hurt not because we lost the game, Kruze more than deserved it, but it hurt because we couldn't place foot and paw on that arena anymore. We loved that pressure so much, we loved that atmosphere so much, the audience, the show, we felt like Gladiators back in the Roman Empire (partially thanks to Jono and Ben way of hosting haha), we were born for that, but next week, we won't be there for the great finale. Sports and competitions are like that, people will agree and disagree about results, it can be subjective sometimes, but the best thing Team Bravo can do is accept it. Dogs are pretty good at it, they accept and adapt to the new reality, that is the way that they deal with so many things that for humans are traumatizing (like death), they don't spend much energy on it and take the easiest way, so do I should learn it, and I've done it. We always mentioned in interviews that results are good to archive, but our main goal was to have a great performance, and I feel like we were able to entertain the audience a bit.
Out of the studio, between tears, suddenly I looked at my side and there was that little Belgian Malinosaur (Bravo) pushing his toy into my belly. He was proud of us, he was happy, ready to start all over again (never satisfied). Then I thought to myself, it would be stunning having a golden bowl sitting in my lounge, but I guess I have already gotten something way more precious here by my side. Having this dog, as you could see in the tv show, there is not such a thing that we could name impossible, I never train dogs, I make Heroes!
Also, it was incredible meeting so many amazing people and dogs, competitors and production staff, how lucky I was, I can definitely say: there is no prize more valuable than the friendships that I made for life during this journey. I can only be thankful. Great thanks to everyone in the production team for your support and for giving me this opportunity and trusting in my skills, and also for putting it all together making this entertainable show. Also huge thanks to everyone that was supporting us, I got so many nice messages and people stopping me to chat on the streets, and not a single hater (so far), Aotearoa you are unique, thanks to the people that make you, thanks for being home! I will be forever your Kaitiaki!
Team Bravo is actually not done yet, it is just starting. My hero is only 2 y.o. and since the elimination day, we have been already jumping higher, running faster, barking louder and we'll keep working so hard to push more and more any physical limits in the dog's world...so you might see us around, it could be anywhere, in the water: paddling for the next set of waves when ripping them in the lineup, in the air: flying from the top of trees, in the ground: digging out to find drugs or even in the fire: rescuing people out of that, and...if you want to see us on the screen again, please vote for us to be the Top Dog of people's choice (https://xd.wayin.com/display/container/dc/a4a1e86d-98ac-452a-8f7e-93e0d324bf02/details), that would mean the world for us...we can't wait for Season 2!!!
