Believe it or not, some of our valued return customers commonly drive 2 hours, 4 hours, and even 6 hours to attend our hosted koi adoption events. At first glance, we admit this may sound a bit crazy. But in reality, koi adoption provides many hobbyists an opportunity to acquire beautiful fish for their ponds they might otherwise never be able to afford if buying from a koi dealer.

How much is your time worth? Many hobbyists ask themselves this very question when deciding whether to purchase koi from a koi dealer or adopting koi from a nonprofit animal rescue. Buying prized Japanese koi fish from a traditional dealer is never cheap, but in our opinion they are well worth every penny — of course, if you can afford it.

Many of the high quality large Japanese koi made available during our special hosted adoption events were originally purchased by high end koi collectors from these same dealers for very significant prices. Often these high prices were paid just a year or two before — back when these gorgeous living jewels were much smaller than they are today.

No matter how much money a hobbyist may have available in their bank account, finding these show quality gems during one of our events is always a real bargain. The minimal rehoming fees charged during our events are a tiny fraction of typical koi dealer prices. For added peace of mind, we also offer a 14-day return customer guarantee for all koi adoptions.

As a registered nonprofit animal rescue, our sole mission is to find suitable new forever homes for the beautiful living jewels entrusted to our care. In addition to large koi fish rescues, we also receive a very high volume of turtle rescue / surrender requests. Unfortunately, we have been unable to accommodate all these requests due to a lack of resources and insufficient room available in our dedicated turtle pond habitats.

Our dedicated turtle pond habitats are intended to serve as temporary luxury homes for our rescued turtles while they await permanent placement through private adoption. Due to extremely high demand for turtle rescues, in October 2023 we invested significant resources to completely rebuild many of our dedicated turtle pond habitats. These upgrades allow us to safely care for significantly more turtles awaiting new forever homes.

Unfortunately, the demand for turtle rescues continues to far exceed our capacity. Therefore, effective January 1, 2024 a required fee of $20 USD will apply for every turtle/tortoise surrendered to us. This fee helps to offset some of our costs for caring for these adorable shelled creatures while we diligently work to find them suitable new forever homes…

For nearly two decades our dedicated team of volunteers has literally completed hundreds of on-site large koi fish rescues located throughout CA, NV, and AZ while successfully finding new forever homes for thousands of precious living jewels. During our travels we have seen virtually every type of pond imaginable.

Our rescued koi fish come to us from a wide variety of sources. Many of these koi come to us from residential fish ponds and large commercial water features. After completing a comprehensive quarantine process, our rescued koi fish are inspected for a final time and sorted before ever being made eligible for adoption to properly vetted new forever homes.

The purpose of our koi adoption approval process is to help ensure the long term health of the living creatures entrusted to our care. Much like ourselves, we fully understand that many koi keepers ultimately choose to upgrade their ponds over time as their knowledge and experience grows. For this reason we try our best not to exclude any hobbyist interested in koi adoption.

To help ensure optimal health for the precious living creatures entrusted to our care, we also strongly prefer to make our koi fish available through adoption exclusively to properly designed koi ponds rather than shallow water gardens (Aquascape design water features) which we deem to be woefully unfit for large koi fish.

An effective rehoming fee of just $33 USD per fish is required for most large/jumbo koi made available to approved private hobbyists during our special hosted koi adoption events. Before you ask us why koi adoption isn’t free, please take a few moments to ask yourself the following questions:

How much would it cost you to travel hundreds of miles on a weekly basis year round at your own expense in order to successfully complete large complex koi rescues located throughout CA, NV and AZ?

How much would it cost you to safely transport large quantities of jumbo koi across state lines?

How much would it cost you to provide rescued koi fish with adequate care and treatment for a minimum period of 4 weeks?

How much would it cost you to later find then place rescued koi fish into properly vetted new forever homes?

It is neither easy nor inexpensive to do what we do. Based on our extensive experience having successfully completed literally hundreds of large koi rescues throughout CA, NV and AZ over nearly two decades, we can assure you it would cost you far more than $33 USD per fish to do what we do.

Have you already adopted koi during one of our hosted events in the past? If so, then you don’t need to wait until our next scheduled event to adopt even more large koi from us in the future. We proudly offer private koi adoptions to our valued return customers.

Once an approved hobbyist completes an adoption during one of our hosted events, they become one of our valued return customers. And we view our valued return customers as friends. As such, we allow our friends to schedule private koi adoption appointments.

Private koi adoption allows koi collectors an excellent opportunity to view all of the beautiful living jewels currently seeking new forever homes without feeling crowded or rushed during our larger events.

We often receive inquiries from fellow koi keepers asking which koi medications and pond treatments we recommend. Two of the koi health treatments we both highly recommend and commonly use ourselves include KOI PRAZI and KOI NITRO.

Flukes are among the most common koi parasites and can be found during routine scoping in virtually any established koi pond. KOI PRAZI, “the fluke destroyer” is both the freshest and the purest praziquantel powder available on the market. We have used this product ourselves for many years and consider it to be a critical MUST-HAVE treatment for any serious hobbyist.

Tissue damage caused by flukes and other koi parasite attacks can quickly lead to bacterial infections. And if left untreated, these bacterial infections can quickly spiral out of control, often resulting in fish losses. This is exactly where KOI NITRO, “the bacteria buster” comes in. While being both extremely safe and easy to use, KOI NITRO quickly removes deadly anaerobic bacteria which often causes infections leading to ulcers in koi and other pond fish.

This is a statement of fact which you may not hear repeated very often. Many common parasites can be found during scoping within virtually any established pond. The very best defense mechanism against controlling parasitic outbreaks is optimal water quality, which can be achieved thru sufficient koi pond filtration and proper koi quarantine procedures.

Salt — yes, common everyday salt serves as a very safe and effective preventative treatment against most common koi parasitic outbreaks. In most cases, a salinity level of .04% - .05% should be sufficient to keep most parasites in check all by itself. To achieve .04% salinity, add 4 pounds salt per 100 gallons pond water. Be sure to use a digital salinity meter and check salinity levels on a regular basis.

KOI PRAZI treatment, which is 100% safe for use with salt, is our recommended course of action whenever flukes are detected. Salt and KOI PRAZI also serve as an effective and inexpensive shotgun treatment during quarantine. Melachite green and formalin treatments cannot be used safely with salt; however this can also be a very effective stand alone treatment for flukes and other common koi parasites.

When in doubt, always assume any new koi additions have parasites and treat them accordingly in quarantine before adding them to your main pond…

This is a true story, and it is not unique. A high end koi collector spends many years and a great deal of money hand selecting the perfect Japanese koi to add to their pond. Time passes. And then one day for one reason or another they have to relocate far away. Realizing they are unable to take their beloved koi with them, they reach out to us for help.

We provide photos and videos of their koi once they arrive safely in quarantine so they know they are okay. And we also promise to find their koi new forever homes. Many times the pond owner reveals to us the original dealer price paid for their prized koi while cautioning us not to let their koi go too cheaply. Our rehoming fees are a small fraction of typical dealer cost.

It is VERY common for a hobbyist to purchase a new koi fish from a pet shop or koi dealer, take the fish home then immediately add it to their pond only to watch it die a few short weeks later. Why does this scenario get repeated so often? All your existing fish still inhabiting the same pond seem just fine. So did you purchase a sick fish? Or worse, did the pet store or your koi dealer knowingly sell you a sick fish?

Not likely. While illness is always a possibility, in our experience most koi losses actually result from three factors which conspire together to create the perfect storm for new koi additions. These three deadly factors include (1) significantly increased koi stress levels, (2) common koi parasites, and (3) resulting bacterial infections. In reality, if these new fish were still with your dealer rather than in your pond they would likely still be alive today.

By definition, a koi dealer is someone in the “business” of selling koi fish. As a nonprofit animal rescue, our “mission” is to find suitable new forever homes for the living creatures entrusted to our care. Our special koi adoption events are intended to help us accomplish this mission. For this reason, an approved koi adoption request is required for all private hobbyists wishing to attend our events.

Our dedicated team of volunteers commonly travels hundreds of miles at their own expense to complete large koi rescues throughout CA, NV, and AZ. After finishing quarantine, many of these rescued koi fish are then made available to approved private hobbyists through adoptions made at these special hosted events. While most people are already well familiar with animal rescues, chances are many never heard of a “koi rescue” until they stumbled across our website or spotted us on social media. While completing our koi rescues, one of the questions we receive most often is how we ever got into this crazy adventure in the first place. We often ask ourselves the same question.😜

While we started doing rescues on a regular basis way back in 2008, most hobbyists likely never heard of us until late 2020. And why is this? One word: COVID. When the COVID pandemic turned the world upside down, new pond construction for our supporting pond builders was brought to a sudden halt. And with new rescue requests still coming in, we had nowhere to place these fish once they finished quarantine.

So out of necessity, in October 2020 we hosted our very first koi adoption event for private hobbyists in order to help find new forever homes for nearly 800 large koi fish originating from the now-closed Colorado Belle Casino in Laughlin, NV. Before this first event, we never considered the idea of making our rescued koi fish available for adoption direct to private hobbyists.

The response from that first event helped us realize that many local hobbyists were just as “koi kichi” (crazy for koi) as we are. And in the years since we’ve come to make many new friends who, just like us, view koi keeping as one of the greatest hobbies in the world. If done right, your viewing spot next to your own backyard pond can truly become your favorite place in this world.

We do what we do for the pure love of koi, because these majestic creatures have brought a tremendous amount of joy into our lives and we enjoy seeing this same joy from our friends and supporters.
