If you are moving and cannot take your koi fish with you, if your pond is overstocked, or if you are closing down your pond we can help! We offer free on-site rescue services throughout CA, NV and AZ. After finishing our quarantine process, our rescued koi fish are placed into properly vetted new forever homes through adoptions to approved private hobbyists.

Our dedicated volunteers can safely transport any koi, regardless of size or quality. We are also highly experienced at safely transporting large quantities of jumbo koi over great distances without issue. For peace of mind, we also commonly provide videos of rescued koi relaxing in quarantine back to their former owners.

We often complete complex on-site rescues from both commercial water features and private residential ponds. Due to the high volume of requests we receive, a lead time of 2-3 weeks typically applies for most smaller rescues. Southern California Koi Rescue is a nonprofit animal rescue specializing in large koi fish and other pond pets. We are NOT koi dealers and we do not “sell” koi. The purpose of our special hosted adoption events is to place our rescued koi fish and other pond pets into properly vetted new forever homes.

KOI ADOPTION VS. BUYING KOI. There are significant differences between adopting any living creature from an animal rescue and purchasing new pets from a retail dealer or pet store. While koi adoption is not free, rehoming fees for large/jumbo koi are a tiny fraction of typical koi dealer wholesale cost.

LARGE & JUMBO KOI. Because we specialize in large koi rescues, most Japanese koi fish made available for adoption during our hosted events tend to be large/jumbo size. We classify any koi over 12” length as large while any koi measuring over 24” length is considered jumbo.

HUGE SELECTION. We typically make hundreds of beautiful living jewels available for adoption during our hosted events. This selection typically includes large/jumbo koi, butterfly koi, and even large pond goldfish ranging from pond grade to show quality fish.

Koi collecting can quickly become a very expensive hobby, but it doesn’t need to be.

Imagine visiting your favorite local koi dealer with $300 USD burning a hole in your pocket. While most people are already well familiar with animal rescues, chances are many never heard of a “koi rescue” until they stumbled across our website or spotted us on social media. While completing our koi rescues, one of the questions we receive most often is how we ever got into this crazy adventure in the first place. We often ask ourselves the same question.😜

While we started doing rescues on a regular basis way back in 2008, most hobbyists likely never heard of us until late 2020. And why is this? One word: COVID. When the COVID pandemic turned the world upside down, new pond construction for our supporting pond builders was brought to a sudden halt. And with new rescue requests still coming in, we had nowhere to place these fish once they finished quarantine.

So out of necessity, in October 2020 we hosted our very first koi adoption event for private hobbyists in order to help find new forever homes for nearly 800 large koi fish originating from the now-closed Colorado Belle Casino in Laughlin, NV. Before this first event, we never considered the idea of making our rescued koi fish available for adoption direct to private hobbyists.

The response from that first event helped us realize that many local hobbyists were just as “koi kichi” (crazy for koi) as we are. And in the years since we’ve come to make many new friends who, just like us, view koi keeping as one of the greatest hobbies in the world. If done right, your viewing spot next to your own backyard pond can truly become your favorite place in this world.

We do what we do for the pure love of koi, because these majestic creatures have brought a tremendous amount of joy into our lives and we enjoy seeing this same joy from our friends and supporters.

For nearly two decades our dedicated team of volunteers has completed hundreds of large koi rescues throughout CA, NV, and AZ. What we do is not easy nor cheap, but we love it. And nothing makes us happier than seeing some of our beautiful rescued koi fish enjoying a second chance at life in their new forever home. While we appreciate all of our supporters, we are especially grateful for our valued return customers, many of whom we have also come to view as friends. These very special people often travel great distances to attend our hosted adoption events and regularly attend several events per year. By definition, a koi dealer is someone in the “business” of selling koi fish. As a nonprofit animal rescue, our “mission” is to find suitable new forever homes for the living creatures entrusted to our care. Our special koi adoption events are intended to help us accomplish this mission. For this reason, an approved koi adoption request is required for all private hobbyists wishing to attend our events.

Our dedicated team of volunteers commonly travels hundreds of miles at their own expense to complete large koi rescues throughout CA, NV, and AZ. After finishing quarantine, many of these rescued koi fish are then made available to approved private hobbyists through adoptions made at these special hosted events. The minimal rehoming fees charged for adoptions made at these events help to offset some of our operating costs for the various free services we provide.

If you are looking to purchase high quality Japanese koi fish we would be extremely happy to refer you to several highly reputable koi dealers located within Southern California that not only support us, but whom we also consider to be close personal friends. We are NOT koi dealers ourselves, nor are we their competitors in any way. We are a nonprofit animal rescue specializing in large koi fish and other common pond pets.

The sole purpose of our special hosted koi adoption events is to help find suitable new forever homes for the beautiful living jewels entrusted to our care. While rehoming fees charged at these events are a tiny fraction of typical koi dealer wholesale cost, these minimal fees do help to offset some of our operational costs for the various free services we provide. We have successfully re-homed hundreds of large koi fish through adoptions made at these events.
