A typical Saturday morning, 10am, over a hundred miles away from home. You look down at your shoes after completing the first of 5 onsite rescues scheduled for the day. It’s going to be a long day and you’ll likely not return back home until well into the evening. And then the real work starts.

If you don’t like getting dirty (or wet) then volunteering for a koi rescue is definitely not for you. The work our dedicated team of volunteers does is not cheap or easy and yet they commonly travel hundreds of miles virtually every week at their own expense to make it happen. As a nonprofit animal rescue, our mission is to find properly vetted new forever homes for the precious living creatures entrusted to our care.

Our dedicated team of volunteers commonly travels hundreds of miles at their own expense to complete large koi rescues located throughout CA, NV, and AZ. Because many of our volunteers have full-time careers during the week, it is not uncommon for them to put in 12, 14, or even 16-hour workdays on weekends to help rescue these precious living jewels. No one is getting rich doing what we do. In fact, like most nonprofit animal rescues, sometimes we feel extremely lucky just to break even considering all the expenses required.

So why have we been committed to doing this now for nearly two decades? Well, the answer is quite simple. We do this because we genuinely love it, because few things in life bring us as much joy as when one of our valued supporters and friends shares a photo or video with us showing some of our rescued koi fish enjoying their new forever home. Having now hosted dozens of koi adoption events over the past 3 years, we have also greatly enjoyed making it possible for approved private hobbyists to acquire large, beautiful koi fish they might otherwise never be able to afford.

As we look towards the future, we want to express our sincerest appreciation to all those who have supported us along the way. Whether you made an in-kind charitable donation or took the long drive to attend one of our special hosted events in the past, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Because without you, none of this would be possible. We consider koi keeping as one of the most enjoyable hobbies in the world, and in the end, what we do is all about promoting the hobby.

As a registered animal rescue, our sole mission is to find suitable new forever homes for the beautiful living jewels entrusted to our care.  In addition to large koi fish rescues, we also consistently receive a very high volume of turtle rescue requests.  Unfortunately, we have been unable to accommodate all these requests due to a lack of resources and insufficient room available in our dedicated turtle pond habitat. 

Our dedicated turtle pond habitat is intended to serve as a temporary home for our rescued turtles while they await permanent placement through adoption.  Due to extremely high demand for turtle rescues, in October 2023 we invested significant resources to completely rebuild our dedicated turtle pond habitat. This upgrade allows us to safely care for significantly more turtles awaiting new forever homes. 

Unfortunately, the demand for turtle rescues will continue to far exceed our capacity.  Therefore, effective January 1, 2024 a fee of $20 USD per turtle will be required for all turtle rescues/surrenders.  This donation will help to offset some of our costs for caring for your turtle(s) while we diligently work to find them suitable new forever homes…

Every once in a while we receive an angry comment from someone upset about our sharing our honest assessment regarding Aquascape design water features being woefully unfit for longterm koi health. Almost without exception, these negative comments tend to originate from “certified” landscapers who rely on the Aquascape business model to earn a living.

As a registered non profit organization, we do not sell any competing products nor services. Our sole agenda is to help ensure the beautiful living jewels entrusted to our care are placed into suitable new forever homes. For this reason alone, we strongly prefer to make our rescued koi fish available to proper koi ponds only. While both can be aesthetically appealing, a water garden (typical Aquascape water feature) and a proper koi pond are not the same.

A proper koi pond design can achieve and maintain optimal water quality at typical koi stocking rates while requiring a minimal maintenance workload for the pond owner. In addition, a proper koi pond design also offers virtually zero ongoing service costs, because annual pond clean-outs are not required and you’ll never have to buy a pond vacuum nor hire your contractor to come back to replace the gravel and rocks left on your pond floor.

If you are planning to add a pond to your own backyard, we highly encourage you to do your own research. Be sure to speak with leading koi breeders, koi dealers and pond builders then form your own opinions…

Special thanks to our valued customers for making our October 2025 hosted koi adoption event a success. Over 200 living creatures found new forever homes — thanks to you! We appreciate your support more than you know and we look forward to serving you again in the future.

Southern California Koi Rescue is a registered non-profit animal rescue. Our sole mission is to find new forever homes for these precious living jewels. Since 2008 we have successfully rescued and rehomed literally thousands of koi which came to us from commercial water features and residential ponds located throughout CA, NV, and AZ.

An approved Koi Adoption Request is required to help ensure our available koi are placed into suitable ponds only. Much like when you adopt a dog or cat from your local animal shelter, a nominal rehoming fee is charged for every koi adoption. This rehoming fee is a very small fraction of typical koi dealer wholesale cost and helps to offset some of our operating costs for the various services we provide.

Unfortunately, it is not cheap nor easy to do what we do. So if you are looking for free koi, please look elsewhere. But if you are looking to add some beautiful koi to your pond and would like to save money while supporting a great cause, we hope to see you at one of our onsite koi adoption events.
