If you are searching for large koi fish without the large koi dealer prices, then you may be able to find a local pond owner looking to sell off their koi collection. If so, be advised the asking prices may still be too high for your liking, the available selection will be very limited, and you may also be required to bring your own container and/or aerator for transport back home. Private sales are also as-is and final.

Koi adoption provides a unique opportunity to private hobbyists looking to add beautiful living jewels to their ponds on a limited budget. Our special hosted koi adoption events typically offer an excellent mix of high quality Japanese koi, jumbo koi, and butterfly koi to choose from. We also typically offer a great selection of small koi and large pond goldfish. We also offer a 14-day guarantee for all koi adoptions to valued return customers.

The minimal rehoming fees charged at our hosted events are a tiny fraction of typical koi dealer wholesale cost and help to offset some of our operational costs for the various free services we provide.

Southern California Koi Rescue is a nonprofit animal rescue specializing in large koi fish and other pond pets. We are NOT koi dealers and we do not “sell” koi. The purpose of our special hosted adoption events is to place our rescued koi fish and other pond pets into properly vetted new forever homes.

KOI ADOPTION VS. BUYING KOI. There are significant differences between adopting any living creature from an animal rescue and purchasing new pets from a retail dealer or pet store. While koi adoption is not free, rehoming fees for large/jumbo koi are a tiny fraction of typical koi dealer wholesale cost.

LARGE & JUMBO KOI. Because we specialize in large koi rescues, most Japanese koi fish made available for adoption during our hosted events tend to be large/jumbo size. We classify any koi over 12” length as large while any koi measuring over 24” length is considered jumbo.

HUGE SELECTION. We typically make hundreds of beautiful living jewels available for adoption during our hosted events. This selection typically includes large/jumbo koi, butterfly koi, and even large pond goldfish ranging from pond grade to show quality fish.

An effective rehoming fee of just $33 USD per fish is required for most large/jumbo koi made available to approved private hobbyists during our special hosted koi adoption events. Before you ask us why koi adoption isn’t free, please take a few moments to ask yourself the following questions:

How much would it cost you to travel hundreds of miles on a weekly basis year round at your own expense in order to successfully complete large complex koi rescues located throughout CA, NV and AZ?

How much would it cost you to safely transport large quantities of jumbo koi across state lines?

How much would it cost you to provide rescued koi fish with adequate care and treatment for a minimum period of 4 weeks?

How much would it cost you to later find then place rescued koi fish into properly vetted new forever homes?

It is neither easy nor inexpensive to do what we do. Based on our extensive experience having successfully completed literally hundreds of large koi rescues throughout CA, NV and AZ over nearly two decades, we can assure you it would cost you far more than $33 USD per fish to do what we do.

As a registered animal rescue, our sole mission is to find suitable new forever homes for the beautiful living jewels entrusted to our care. In addition to large koi fish rescues, we also consistently receive a very high volume of turtle rescue requests. Unfortunately, we have been unable to accommodate all these requests due to a lack of resources and insufficient room available in our dedicated turtle pond habitat.

Our dedicated turtle pond habitat is intended to serve as a temporary home for our rescued turtles while they await permanent placement through adoption. Due to extremely high demand for turtle rescues, in October 2023 we invested significant resources to completely rebuild our dedicated turtle pond habitat. This upgrade allows us to safely care for significantly more turtles awaiting new forever homes.

Unfortunately, the demand for turtle rescues will continue to far exceed our capacity. Therefore, effective January 1, 2024 a charitable donation of $20 USD per turtle will be required for all turtle rescues/surrenders. This donation will help to offset some of our costs for caring for your turtle(s) while we diligently work to find them suitable new forever homes…

If you are interested in adding some quality jumbo koi fish to your pond and have already adopted koi from us in the past, then we have a BIG surprise for you! JUMBO, actually. We currently have well over 100 beautiful jumbo koi fish, high quality Japanese koi, and butterfly koi relaxing in quarantine. After finishing quarantine, we will be making these gorgeous specimens available exclusively via adoption to our valued return customers.

In order to find new forever homes for these beautiful living jewels, a limited number of private adoption appointments will be scheduled for early December 2024. Return customers wishing to schedule one of these private appointments are highly encouraged to contact us via SMS text. No DMs, please. This is also your last chance to adopt koi from us in 2024 as our next hosted koi adoption event will not be scheduled until 2025. We hope to hear from you soon.

This is a true story, and it is not unique.

A high end koi collector spends many years and a great deal of money hand selecting the perfect Japanese koi to add to their pond. Time passes. And then one day for one reason or another they have to relocate far away.

Realizing they are unable to take their beloved koi with them, they reach out to us for help. We provide photos and videos of their koi once they arrive safely in quarantine so they know they are okay. And we also promise to find their koi new forever homes.

Many times the pond owner reveals to us the original dealer price paid for their prized koi while cautioning us not to let their koi go too cheaply. Our rehoming fees are a small fraction of typical dealer cost.

Much like when you adopt a new puppy from your local animal shelter, a nominal rehoming fee is required for all koi adoptions completed during our special hosted events. While a tiny fraction of typical koi dealer wholesale cost, these minimal fees help to offset some of our costs for the various free services we provide. We try our best to keep these rehoming fees as low as possible.

An effective rehoming fee of just $33 USD is required for most large/jumbo koi fish made available to approved private hobbyists during our events. This effective rehoming fee reflects the average USD amount paid by a private hobbyist for all koi adopted during an event after accepted “free koi” quantity discounts (3 koi / $100 = $33). We commonly promote these offerings for “$50 each or 3 for $100.”

All koi adoptions take place on a first come, first served basis and we will not hold specific koi for any customers, so to help ensure a level of fairness for private hobbyists having later appointment times we also set aside a special assortment of large/jumbo koi. Effective rehoming fees for these special offerings typically range from $50 – $150 USD per fish after accepted “free koi” quantity discounts.

Without any hesitation, we are quite confident in stating that many of the beautiful large/jumbo koi fish we make available during our events would easily sell for thousands of dollars if purchased from any koi dealer. Once an approved hobbyist completes an adoption during one of our hosted events, they become one of our valued return customers. And we view our valued return customers as friends. As such, we allow our friends to schedule private koi adoption appointments.

If you are moving and cannot take your koi fish with you, if your pond is overstocked, or if you are closing down your pond we can help! We offer free on-site rescue services throughout CA, NV and AZ. After finishing our quarantine process, our rescued koi fish are placed into properly vetted new forever homes through adoptions to approved private hobbyists.

Our dedicated volunteers can safely transport any koi, regardless of size or quality. We are also highly experienced at safely transporting large quantities of jumbo koi over great distances without issue. For peace of mind, we also commonly provide videos of rescued koi relaxing in quarantine back to their former owners.

We often complete complex on-site rescues from both commercial water features and private residential ponds. Due to the high volume of requests we receive, a lead time of 2-3 weeks typically applies for most smaller rescues.
