Everyone please meet our newest resident, Gracie. She is an approximately 8 month old Barbados Black Belly Sheep who cheated death. She was being kept in a cage and fattened up for butchering by people who intended to eat her. They had set her kill day- twice- and for various reasons never got around to it.
Thankfully, a compassionate person learned of this and managed to obtain custody of Gracie. She was rushed to the vet for an injured front leg- expected to recover fully- and then brought to us on Monday. She is living with our llama, Cass- the two formed a strong, instant bond and are now never apart. Where Cass goes, Gracie goes.
She is incredibly peaceful, gentle, and bright. Please, think of Gracie the next time you consider a lamb chop. Every one of those animals wanted to live and didn’t deserve to die. Gracie is a lucky one 💕🌸 Welcome home, little lamb. 🐑

Meet Dani! The Sanctuary received a call from a concerned citizen in El Dorado, NM who reported that an abandoned pig was running loose. This man had called the Department of Game and Fish to help the lost pig and they told him to “put a bullet in its head.” That was their “solution.” Thankfully, he didn’t listen and called us instead.
We immediately enlisted the help of , which managed to catch the pig. They saved her life. And named her Dani.
She has now received appropriate veterinary care, including treatment for Dippity Pig Syndrome, which is brought on by stress and is comparable to Shingles in humans (Dani’s rash is evident in the 3rd pic.) She is under a year old and simply the sweetest, gentlest personality.
Side note: This isn’t the first time Game and Fish has been abominable. A few years back, they told Natalie she could be fined for feeding the birds. Please refrain from EVER using them as a resource.

The Sanctuary received this six-week-old litter of Labrador mixes yesterday evening from a euthanasia list. They were starving. Natalie reports that they were all standing on their hind legs absolutely screaming for food. Now, they will have brimming bowls, clean, fresh water, and a safe home to gain strength and vibrancy before going out into the world and living long, full, happy lives 🙏❤️

Puppy alert! Last night the sanctuary took custody of this precious pair, siblings, only a month old. They have squishy faces and soft, graceful bodies. They are very much enjoying the puppy area with its luxe blankets, relaxing music, and endless esbilac. We are honored to have them. If you are interested in adopting one or both, please contact Natalie! ❤️

How it’s going vs. how it started! 💁‍♀️ Natalie and board member and biologist Justin Stevenson decided the sanctuary was missing something: a pond! Several hours of tractor time, tons of bentonite clay and soil, and a well-timed rainstorm later, and we are well on our way to establishing a beautiful pond in the meadow, 3.5 feet at its deepest, the newest puppy play spot and wildlife drinking station on sanctuary grounds! 💙🩵🤍

Our Director, Natalie, wanted to share a bit about a little-known initiative of the sanctuary involving puppies. In recent months and years, a major focus of our resources and attention has been on moving puppies out of New Mexico and into other states around the country with better infrastructure in place for homeless animals. Right now, we have received word that animal control has 60 puppies in its custody from Valencia County, NM alone. Shelters here are overrun, and while we continue to push for more widespread spay and neuter, Natalie remains laser-focused on giving puppies a chance at a better life, as, she says, “by hook or by crook.” To that end, any donation no matter how small, will help us with this major Sanctuary focus. 🙏

For the first year ever, the land around the Sanctuary grounds is being visited by a group of wild turkeys! They enjoy the bird seed we scatter for them and we are delighted that they evidently feel safe enough to visit us day after day. It’s such a joy to see these beautiful, almost prehistoric beings enjoying their lives in nature. They are . Thank you Sanctuary friend, esteemed biologist, and talented photographer Justin Stevenson for capturing these winged visitors!

Kleenex alert! Someone abandoned this litter of seven-week old puppies in the dumpster at . Of course we immediately stepped in to take them, and this class of Montessori students, who visit the sanctuary every week, picked up the puppies and delivered them to the Giant Doghouse. There’s so much cruelty and inhumanity in this world, but we choose to focus on the good, and we’re feeling pretty optimistic about the future if these kind kids are any indicator!

CALLING FOR KINDNESS: A sanctuary friend found this black dog running loose in Pecos; she is unable to keep him and is trying desperately to find him a home worthy of his friendly and loving personality. He is approximately one year old, neutered, and extremely friendly to people and other dogs. Not sure how he does around cats but we have no reason to suspect he’d be anything but delightful. We are urgently seeking a foster or ideally a permanent home. Time is of the essence. Please contact Natalie ASAP if you are in a position to help this sweet boy. Thank you and happy new year!

A Christmas miracle from the Sanctuary: one of our newly rescued puppies, Bunny, became very ill with a particularly powerful strain of parvovirus. She was receiving the best vet care possible from Road Runner Emergency Hospital, but she just seemed to get worse and worse. The humane decision was eventually made to euthanize her in order to end her terrible suffering- but- the hospital became too busy that night to carry out the euthanasia. Then, the next morning, Bunny was standing up, eating and drinking!!!! The vets and Natalie were stunned. Miraculously, Bunny continued to make a strong recovery and was released into Natalie’s arms today.
It came down to the wire, but we are so so thankful we were able to save her precious life. The total cost of her care came to $7,000 dollars, and we would be so grateful for any donations to help cover the fee for our Christmas miracle girl. Today, we celebrate Bunny, our survivor- we love you! 🐰🐶💖🙏
