Just when you think you have enough on your plate, you get a message that someone needs to give up two MORE Dalmatian puppies at about the same age as the other five. So, this afternoon the first two puppies arrived and wow, are they sweethearts and cuties! They also have not been given names - just green collar and purple collar, so I don't know if we will include them in our current theme or choose another theme for these two, but they were only born a week apart, with these two being slightly older. I had some people upset that our Amazon list was already sold out, so I'll add a few more things to it to cover the additional puppies and maybe a toy or two for them. I was trying to be conservative, but you guys rocked out the list in about 8 hours! THANK YOU!! https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/155ECDH2LADNW?ref_=wl_share

I am going to keep them separated at first because these two are completely UTD on vaccines and the others will get their second set of shots on Sunday, as well as dewormer. These puppies are gorgeous!

As always, appreciate your thoughts on naming and we may end up pulling names out of a hat because we have received so many good ones that we haven't used before! Enjoy the pics that Ron took of these two this afternoon. (and yes, he got a little crazy with the pics, but you can tell the two apart by the markings on their face)

PUPPIES! ARRIVING SOON. Rescues are overflowing with Dalmatians everywhere. We are taking a litter of five puppies (all male) that are about 13 weeks this weekend. We haven't taken a litter in a long time, and we are short on supplies for puppies. I have set up an Amazon Wish List if anyone would like to help with things for them. We have some stuff to get us started. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/155ECDH2LADNW?ref_=wl_share

Yes, the puppies will be available for adoption once they are completely vetted. We do not spay or neuter puppies this young. If you ask us why, you probably need to do a little more research on Dalmatians, especially males before considering adoption. Foster homes would be nice! We are hoping a foster home won't be needed more than a couple of weeks, but hey, you can also get in line for a puppy if you foster! If you have fostered previously, just PM us. If you haven't, please complete our adoption application as the qualifications are the same to adopt or foster. In the "Name of Dog you are interested in, just type FOSTER". We supply everything you need to foster. I only have this one picture right now, but we will have plenty when they arrive and Ron starts taking pics of them. If you want to apply for a puppy, just put PUPPY as they don't have names yet.

Speaking of names.... help us name them. You have 2 days to help us find a theme like characters in Lord of the Rings, The Seven Dwarfs (NOT), Cowboys, Indians, Famous Baseball Players, something different for these guys! Find a theme and five different names for them. Remember they are all male, and I won't tolerate female names for males. You all have to remember this has to be names that I can pronounce - I am from Virginia (we call that VAJINYA). Okay guys, GO!

Also on Saturday, sweet Breezy found her new home with Ray and Melanie and their kids Madison & Calvin (not pictured) in Blackstone, Virginia. I think Madison was in love before her feet hit the top steps of our deck and Breezy gravitated straight for her. (I hear she slept with her last night!) Breezy has been waiting several weeks for the perfect family and I think she has found the right home at last. Please welcome the Armes family to our Spotted nation and we wish them many years with Ms. Breezy.

Please welcome new adopters Robert & Audra with their son, James from Earlysville, Va. They drove out on Saturday to meet Jack with their dog, Gia to give him a new forever home. Jack came to us very undernourished from a local "greeder" and then buyer who only had him a few weeks before advertising him on FB as free to a good home. Of course the BYB wouldn't take him back. Thankfully a volunteer saw him and got him safely to us. Jack was with us for 3 weeks gaining weight, but we had not posted him as available for adoption yet. Audra had previously applied for another dog (Ace) so we gave them a call and they headed over to meet him. Jack is only about 8 months old, so he has some growing to do, but we know he will do well with his new family. This boy is really sweet and has not met anyone he doesn't like! Again, welcome to our newest adopters.

Wonderful adoption today from a couple in Yorktown, Virginia. Ms. Bristol has been adopted by David and Linda Blanchard and their handsome Dalmatian, Dash, who is almost 10 and looks like he is 4. Why you ask? Because he runs marathons with his Dad and keeps himself in tip-top shape! Since he is getting to the age where he shouldn't run extremely long races, Mike is going to see if Bristol would like to train for some runs, and my guess is that she will love it. Bristol loves to run! The two dogs immediately liked each other, but Bristol, aloof just as I described her, letting Dash know that she could take him or leave him. Dash acted the same way, like ok, I'll take a little sister if I must. When it came time to leave, Bristol hopped right up in the truck like she had done it a thousand times and said she was ready to start her new life with the Blanchards. I love it when they don't even look back. I know I have done my job getting them ready to go. Thank you, Linda for the added donation today. That will sure come in handy for the wild little boy we just took in this week. I am thrilled with this adoption and look forward to updates of Bristol in her new home. Please welcome the Blanchards to our spotted family. (one of the pictures is of David running a marathon with Dash)

ADOPTED

The other of our pair of females is Bristol. She is a liver/white smaller female at about 42 pounds. Bristol is a little more aloof than Breezy at first, but she warms up quickly. She is an adorable tiny girl who wants to be involved in whatever the other dogs are doing. She does need to be fed Purina One Salmon & Rice as she is allergic to several foods and she does great on this one. She knows sit, down, paw, and roll over. She is a really sweet dog and likes kids. She has been around cats in the past, but this is a trained behavior, so we can't guarantee she would be good with ALL cats. Staying with Breezy, she will always be a follower. Splitting them up and Bristol's true personalities may shine through, and this is why we would not have a problem separating them. They could go together and be fine, or they could be separated and Bristol might...might.. be a better dog on her own. Both are sweet dogs. Bristol is about 5 years old according to her vet records, but these dogs have only been together about 3 years. Take a look at these cuties and see if one or both might work in your home. Fill out an application at www.drswv.com

We have two new females who came in together than can be placed together or separately. They have not lived together for their entire lives, but have for the last couple of years. First is Breezy. She is a six year old Gentle sweetheart that loves everyone she meets. She will show you that famous Dalmatian smile when she decides to do it on her terms (usually when a treat is involved). She is spayed and UTD on her vaccines, HW negative and ready to be adopted. Her weight is low 50's and while she can use some leash manners, she is not bad on a leash.

RAIN WAS ADOPTED AT THE SHELTER ON HER RELEASE DATE.

RAIN IS ON HOLD AT THE SHELTER AS THEY MAY PLACE HER THERE. If she lands with us, we will reach out to those who have applied for her. :)
This little 4-5 month old Dalmatian mix needs a home. Her name is Rain and she is located in a shelter in Wythe, VA. No one is sure of her parentage, but she looks like a Dal/Pointer mix. If anyone is interested in adopting, let me know and I'll hook you up with the contact person. She looks like a little sweetie who is sad to be in the shelter. Rain would make a nice companion for some family!

Anyone interested in fostering Rain can fill out our adoption application, or if you are previous adopter, just shoot me a PM and let me know you are SERIOUS about fostering or ADOPTING. Previous adopters do not need to fill out another application. www.drswv.com

ADOPTED - Pics coming!

Say hello to our second Ace of the year! This handsome 1 year liver boy has found himself in need of a new home. He has had some obedience training and was just neutered. He is UTD on shots and ready for his forever home. This is one nice Dalmatian! He is great with other dogs, good with kids, and loves everyone he meets. Ace is very submissive, but playful and wants to interact with every dog he sees, but great on a leash. He is about 56 pounds now and I suspect he will be around 60-62 at maturity. He is crate trained and housetrained and well mannered in the house. Applications can be filled out on our website at drswv.com.

Welcome to new adopters Sue & Mike Ellerbrock from Blacksburg, VA. Longtime Dalmatian owners and fans, they started out fostering Ember, waiting for her scheduled spay. They fell in love with her pretty quick and the timing for her spay came while they were on vacation so she was back with me for a week and Sue picked her up yesterday. Ember/Emma was very happy to see her mom come back for her. I am not sure who was happier, Sue or Ember! She loves to ride and she was very excited to get to the car. We are excited to welcome Sue & Mike into our spotted family.

Mr. Rooster has been adopted! His new name is Alex and there is a story behind his new name, but you need to check his new mom's page to get the history - it is related to Greek mythology and Roosters! Anyway, welcome back to Ruth Hurley who adopted Tyson from us many years ago. Tyson has since crossed the Bridge and she adopted Philip from Adopt A Spot a couple of years ago and felt he needed a brother. It was great to see Ruth again and Rooster seemed to agree that she was the right pick for his new mom and Philip his new brother. We are very happy for this trio!

UPDATE - This girl is on HOLD for now. The person who has her is debating on whether to keep her or not. We will update if we take her and transport.
We are looking for someone in the Anderson, SC area willing to foster a small female Dalmatian for 1-2 weeks until we can have her spayed and transported to Virginia. Anyone available to help? Need is immediate and we may be able to move her by the following weekend. PM me if you can help.

More pictures of Rooster showing him playing and getting along with our pack, and especially my youngest Darcy, who is half his size. He is gentle with her but runs and keeps up with my crazy girl. In the butt shot, Rooster is on the left. Rooster is really a NICE dog!!

ADOPTION PENDING! Rooster had a meet & greet today that went very well. Adoption is pending.

Rooster! I have no idea how this boy got his name, but if you are into white faced 65 pound young boys, this is your guy. This one year old is a sweetheart. He is being rehomed for a being a little mouthy with the child in the home, but so far I have noticed nothing but typical Dalmatian behavior that can't be redirected with a toy and training. We are recommending no young children because of what has been stated about his past, but wow, this is a nice dog. An obedience class and some time to decompress (he is missing his family and playmate) and Rooster will make a nice dog for someone. He does have one blue eye - no, we don't have a hearing test, but know he hears fine from at least one of these gorgeous ears. We will know more about him as we get to know him a little better, but thus far he has been fine with 3 female Dalmatians and one male here with our pack. He does seem to initially trust women better than men, but I'm sure that will change as he gets to know them.

MEET UP IN DELAWARE PENDING
COURTESTY POST - DELAWARE One of our best adopters took on a foster Dalmatian that just isn't working out in her home. They were hoping that they might be able to integrate her into their pack, but it isn't working. She is somewhat aggressive to some of the dogs she has, but not all of them. She picks on the weaker dogs and has even gotten into fights with them. She is a vet tech, so she has tried several techniques to stop this behavior with little luck. Raven needs a new home, preferably with no other dogs or cats. She might be a perfect match with a male Dalmatian, but we wouldn't know that without trying. All of the other dogs in this home are female and get along great without Raven. Raven was born on October 13, 2022, so not yet 2 years of age. She weighs 42 pounds and is up to date on all vaccines and is spayed.

One on one she is the sweetest, cuddly little girl. She comes up to you when you are sitting down and wraps her legs around your neck and literally hugs you, then lays her head on your chest.

She came from a home that had 3 little boys, but one of them was allergic to her and ended up with our friends who are trying to help her. She is good with kids.

She is crate trained and doesn't mind going in with a treat, that is where she sleeps at night too. She is now house trained too. She goes to the door and scratches and whines when she has to go out.

She doesn't bother with toys very much, she would rather just be close to a person .... She would make an excellent lap dog because she is small.

We will take and approve applications on Raven and then pass approved applications on to our adopter. You MUST MEET the dog in Delaware at the foster home. Raven is a beautiful girl. Let us know if you are interested. Applications are on our website at drswv.com.

Update on Sirius, now Capone. Capone has completely recovered from his heartworm treatment and settling into his new home in Lenoir, NC with Mark Potter as of Thursday afternoon. He still has to be neutered, but that has been scheduled with a vet in his area. Our vet wanted to wait a few more weeks to have that done, so Capone is officially being fostered until until the neuter is complete. The meetup with Mark, his dog Echo and Capone was excellent and they became an immediate family by the time we left their home. I'm not sure who was happier, Mark to have another dog, Capone to have his own home, or Echo to have a new brother. The meeting was beautiful to watch. Dalmatian Rescue would once again like to thank everyone who contributed towards Capone's care by making donations towards his expensive treatment, sending blankets, coats, food, toys, treats, etc. from his Amazon wish list. The list was completed in about 15 hours and enough money was raised for his treatment in 24. We have the best supporters ever!! Thank you just doesn't sound like enough, but we do thank each and every one of you so much. Capone has gone from a dog with a dangerous disease off of a chain 24/7 to living in a loving home 24/7 with a new Dad and a brother. Once he is neutered, his adoption will be 100% complete. Mark has adopted 3 other dogs from us in the past 18 years. 2 were seniors who have passed on, so please welcome him back to our spotted family.

ADOPTION PENDING.........NEW ARRIVAL - Say hello to Ember. This totally sweet girl is between 6 and 7 and just arrived. She seems to have an awesome temperament and does great with our dogs and loves to be loved on. We don't know much about her, other than she came from an over-crowded situation. She is a little chunky, but a proper diet and some added exercise will probably take care of that issue quickly. Ember heads to our vet on Tuesday for a complete checkup and bloodwork, so we will know more about her health at that time. We are not sure if she is spayed or not, so we will be checking on that too, and if not, she will be spayed before heading to her new home. Did I mention how sweet she is? Ember is not just adorable, but she just melts when you touch her. She loves attention! We will update her post as we know more about Ember.

UPDATE AGAIN LILLY HAS BEEN ADOPTED THROUGH DALMATIAN RESCUE OF COLORADO to one of the applicants who applied on this post. DRC has announced her adoption, so we won't spoil the surprise! Congrats to Lilly and her adopter! ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... LILLY HAS BEEN TAKEN IN BY DALMATIAN RESCUE OF COLORADO. PLEASE CONTACT THEM FOR AN APPLICATION. I WILL FORWARD THE APPLICATIONS WE HAVE RECEIVED TO THEM. CONTACT THERE IS SONDRA FULLER. *************** We have a courtesy post for a 6 year old little girl, about 40 pounds that needs a new home asap. This poor little girl was sold as a one year old to a family. Sadly, that family member passed on after five years and her children just tossed the Dalmatian out on the streets. A shelter eventually picked up Lilly off the streets and thankfully the dog was still registered to the original owner. The original owner has taken her in, saved her life, and got her from a horrid weight of 17 pounds to over 40 pounds since she was found. Thankfully a microchip that the "hew owner" never transferred into her own name, led animal control back to the original owner. As much as the original owner would like to keep her, she already has three Dalmatians, two females and another male, and the females are not getting along - AT ALL. This is not unusual and unless you can set up gates and locations to keep them separated, this seldom works. There are also younger children involved here, which reduces the chance of young children not allowing the dogs together. Sadly, the short version is that Lilly needs a new home. The other two females and male did well together before Lilly's arrival and Lilly is causing constant interference with the females. Lilly, who is a six year old girl, spayed and up to date on shots, needs a single family home - older kids are okay - male dogs are okay (wouldn't recommend little ones like chis or yorkies because they think they are 10' tall and bulletproof, but she plays with most males. She also likes older kids and wants to play with them. I would say 8 and up unless you have some really dog-savvy trained kids. Again, she is not a large Dal, only about 40 pounds. NO FEMALE DOGS. Lilly loves people, loves to cuddle and her person now calls her a lazy Dalmatian. She is in the Eastern Shore, Virginia Beach area of Virginia, but the owner is willing to meet up if necessary. However, we always recommend you drive to meet a dog prior to adoption. Lilly is a cute, very very sweet, loving dog that gets along with male dogs only. She is spayed and up to date on shots and microchipped. She loves to cuddle. I had her as a puppy. She is also a “smiler”. Lilly listens to commands. Does well on walks. She is still skiddish but not nearly as bad as she used to be. Good with older kids. If you are interested in Lilly, complete our online application. We will direct it to the owner. Any previous adopter may just express an interest below. No need to reapply. www.drswv.com for application

15/03/2024

SIRIUS UPDATE. Our boy has had his first injection with heartworm treatment Imiticide this week and is resting comfortably with some chill pills to help him remain calm. He is also back on steroids on a tapering dose to help him combat the release of the worm debris into this system. This treatment is necessary, but also dangerous for him, so we have to be careful to keep him as calm as possible for the next 30 days until he gets his next two injections on back-to-back days in April. After those injections, he will again have to be restricted to a crate with minimal walking for yet another 30 days while heartworms continue to die off and be absorbed and shed through his body. After being on a chain for four years and finally getting freedom at his foster home to run and play, this will tough for him, but again, he has been prescribed medications to help keep him calm and relaxed, so hopefully the time will go by quickly for him. His blood work came back as normal this time, with no more signs of anemia and his liver values were back in the good range. The anemia was really low at his first appointment, so we are really happy about this progress. Another update for Sirius is that he has been adopted!! He will be going to Mark Potter, a previous adopter who has adopted 3 from us over the past 18 years, one who is still living, so he will have a companion named Echo. Mark has decided to change his name to Capone, so we will start calling him that to get him used to his new name. Soooo, Capone will be staying here with us until his treatment is completely finished before going to his new home. Our vet wants to wait at least 90 days after treatment before he is put under anesthesia for neutering. Capone loves all of our dogs and gets along with everyone, so we don't see this as a problem for him to go to his new home after treatment and back here for neutering and recheck for heartworm negativity once he is ready for that. Of course we will monitor him during the entire time. In any case, he won't leave us until at least the middle of May. His weight has gone from a measly 33 to 46.5 pounds. We and his vet think his weight is perfect now and he is down to being fed twice a day instead of the 4 and then 3 times we originally had him on. Once again, we would like to thank everyone for your support of DRSWV and Capone. We couldn't have done this without your help. He is just the sweetest boy ever! His tail wags constantly now and he is a joy to foster. Please remember to give your dogs monthly heartworm prevention and preach it to your family and friends. Capone's treatment will be well over $1,100 including all of the bloodwork that needs to be done. Monthly prevention is much cheaper and there are so many options.

UPDATE!! ACE HAS BEEN ADOPTED by former adopters Susan & Mike Woods of Salem. Congrats to them for getting a very nice Dalmatian!........... Ace is looking for a new home. He is located in Botetourt County, VA. The family took him from a bad situation hoping to give him a loving home, but their child is severely allergic. They have tried allergy shots and even keeping the dog in separate parts of the home with little success. The do want to continue to foster him until he is placed. This is what they have written about him. ................ ACE is 4 years old , AKC registered, i’m told he was LUA but don’t have confirmation on that. He’s very healthy now and ideal weight per the vet (he was almost 15 lbs underweight when we got him) He lives on our farm and gets along well with chickens, goats and cows. He has liked every dog we have encounterd. He really doesn’t seem to like cats much. He loves his people and only wants to be where they are, so staying outside while we are at work did not work for him. He is happier in the house unless we are outside. He does well with kids but can get excited and knock little ones over. He loves to steal food from little hands. He is house trained and doesn’t destroy anything but he is an opportunist so if you leave a trash bag out he will get into it. He loves to run, hike and swim. He knows basic commands. He currently sleeps in his crate with door open. He’s on regular food. Heartworm and flea treatment monthly. He is microchipped. Like all dals he sheds like the best of them. .................. If you are interested in adopting this very nice Dalmatian, please complete our adoption application and we will forward it to his owners. He is located near us and we will assist with screening applications.

SIRIUS UPDATE - We have some new pictures of Sirius today showing how far he has come. I wish we had a weight update, but I don't have scales here and his next vet appointment is not for a couple of weeks when he starts his heartworm treatment. He is definitely feeling much better and likes to get out and run free without a chain holding him back. His best buddy is Utah, although he does well with all of the dogs. His sores have almost completely healed and his happy tail has stopped bleeding completely. He is really a sweetheart and loves attention. Pig ears are his new favorite thing once he figured out what they were! His eyes just sparkle when he sees the case open to get one out and he does this cute little dance waiting for an ear. Cross your fingers, toes and paws for a successful first injection and we will let you know how he does with that. I wish he was getting ready for his last injection instead of his first. Treatment is tough on them, but it is necessary for a healthy life. Please send him lots of good thoughts. Some new pics... enjoy!

SIRIUS UPDATE! Just look at our boy and what you guys have all helped accomplish with your donations! Sirius is eating well - still way too fast, but he will eat anything put in front of him - to the point that our vet has started reducing his calories now. His belly has filled out nicely, but we still need to get some weight on his backbone and hipbones and that will come with time. Look how much his face and head have already filled out. He has changed from a dog that had very little energy to a very active boy, running all over the back yard and has climbed our fence twice. Ron had to Sirius-proof the fence because he found a little ledge he could use to climb up and get enough grip to climb over. He wasn't interested in going anywhere except the front door to be let back in. That didn't make Utah very happy because he can't get his heavy butt over the fence and follow Sirius, so he tattled on him very quickly. Ron took some more pictures this afternoon. Ignore the stains on his back. He has a bit of a happy tail and that is causing the stains. As fast as we get it healed, he breaks it open. Take a look into those beautiful amber eyes and tell me how anyone could have abused this boy. He is very sweet and does well with our other dogs. He loves going outside, but he really likes coming back inside. He has not had one accident in the house, although he attempted to lift his leg once, but yelling at him made me feel worse than he did. Poor guy dropped to the floor. I won't do that to him again. :( Again, I want to thank everyone who sent him monetary donations - his vet bills are covered unless we have some unforeseen emergency. Thanks to everyone for his food, his pjs, his treats, toys, supplements, just everything! He still has a risky treatment to go through and that will start March 12th. After he has gained so much freedom, I really hate that he will be confined for two months during treatment, but it must be done. Sirius sends spotted hugs to everyone!

25/01/2024

SIRIUS VET UPDATE today. (Correction here - Thanks Angela!! I had his initial weight wrong!) Our boy has gained almost 12 pounds since intake from his situation in South Carolina. From the wonderful job started at his original shelter to Anderson County Humane Society and now here at DRSWV, Sirius has gone from 33.8 pounds to 45.5. I believe the original intake date was January 7th - I might have to check my notes on that, but in just over three weeks, he has done very well. Our vet wants to slow that weight gain speed down just a bit, but estimates that with his body size, he should weigh in at about 60 pounds. Even with his ribs, backbone and hip bones showing, he was the show-stopper today at our vet's office. Everyone loved him and wanted to give everyone a kiss, whether they wanted one or not. He really needs to learn some manners, and we will get there, but for now we are letting him enjoy his newfound love for finding joy in every new thing he sees. Unless he got one at Anderson County, he enjoyed his first PupCup with Ron today after his vet visit at Dairy Queen. Heartworm protocol has changed just a little from the last one we had treated and according to our vet, after his initial 30 day treatment of Doxy and Prednisone, they will wait another 30 days before starting the Imiticide treatment. He will get an injection, and then wait 30 more days for the 2nd injection and a day later, the 3rd injection. So that means he will be here 60 days before the first treatment, 90 days for the second, 91 days for the third, and then 120 days before treatment is considered complete. This means he will be with us at least 4 months before he will be ready for his new home. During this time he will be restricted to a crate and very short leash walks while the heartworms die off and leave his body through the bloodstream and lungs. Heartworm treatment is dangerous. Letting the heartworms continue to live and do more damage to the heart is even more dangerous and will shorten his life. The good news is that our vet says Sirius heart is strong and there appears to be no damage at this stage. A complete blood panel was done today and we are awaiting results of that to come back, so please send up a few prayers and good vibes that all will be good with his bloodwork. We should have all of the results in a day or two. Thanks again for everything you all have done for Sirius! He sends spotted hugs and kisses!
