On April 29, 2023, in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, a green ratsnake was found dead by a group of BAS-DVM students from NVSU-Bayombong Campus. According to the students, the red-tailed green ratsnake was no longer alive when they found it. The picture below shows that it has been fatally wounded near its belly.
Gonyosoma oxycephalum, known commonly as the arboreal ratsnake, the red-tailed green ratsnake, and the red-tailed racer, is a species of snake in the family Colubridae. The species is endemic to Southeast Asia. These snakes are diurnal (day-active) and primarily arboreal (tree-living). They feed mostly on birds and their eggs and nestlings, but they also eat frogs, lizards, and small mammals.
This species of snake is not a threat to humans; they are non-venomous snakes that kill their prey by constriction. However, because of the common misconception that all snakes are deadly or a threat to our security, they're often left to die or be persecuted.
"Like a snake sheds its skin, we are capable of getting rid of assembled habits, creating space to call matters into question."
- Erik Pevernagie
People kill snakes for three reasons: fear, ignorance, or outright sa**sm. NEWT-NVB is true to its advocacy for educating, protecting, and conserving wildlife.
