Aquaponics NZ provides more than just fresh, quality vegetables and fish. Buying local food is a growing opportunity for local economic development.

We will be providing a better way of living, connecting with our food, and providing resilience in our communities by creating food security. Urban farming, is defined as the production and distribution of food in cities for consumption by local residents. Specifically, in this case the production of both fish and vegetables in one agricultural operation. Urban farming has taken on a variety of fo
rms, ranging from small backyard farms for family use to larger-scale systems that sell fish and vegetables in the retail market. Some regions might require a building for maintaining ideal growing conditions for crops, but many regions can grow both fish and produce with a simple greenhouse for the plants and shade for the fish. Urban aquaponics is a viable solution for many environmental impacts that result from common land-based methods of food production. Fossil fuel usage, climate change, urbanization, and food security will be addressed to indicate reasons for considering locally grown food in sustainable, less land-intensive processes as a viable alternative. Food security and urbanisation rates also serve to point out that urban farming is a way to provide fresh and nutritious foods to those in locations that otherwise have food shipped thousands of miles before reaching their homes or do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables altogether. With limited resources and a growing population, sustainable practices are a critical part of our global development, and food production is seeing more focus from scientists, governments, and consumers. Between changes in soils due to intensive agricultural practices, global climate change, and use for the built environment, more attention is being placed on less soil-reliant ways to grow food or methods that reduce food transportation. Urban aquaponics will decrease the strain on soils by strategically condensing food production into plots of land already unusable for agriculture or remodeled buildings in densely populated areas. Additionally, people are increasingly focusing on eating organic and buying local, thereby turning to farms in their backyards in ways that preserve our limited resources. Aquaponics, one of the methods of sustainably producing food, has been attracting hobbyists and professionals and now has a presence in various settings, including backyards, commercial warehouses, greenhouses, and even as a Disney World attraction.

Kia ora te whΔnau, We are looking for keen people to form a voluntary national advocacy group. The aim? To unify, further, and coordinate open and positive communication with people, organisations, and groups who are interested or affected in and by fish farming for personal use in recirculating aquaculture / aquaponic systems in New Zealand. These groups include, recreational fishers, government representatives, MPI, Fish and Game, DoC... etc. etc. the list goes on. The goal is to enable more edible and sustainable species of fish to be raised in Aquaponics.
In 2025 the NZ Governments Aquaculture Strategy will be reviewed, now is the time for change. PM us if you want to be part of the movement forward. π¦ππ₯¬π±π₯

πΏ Aquaponics is on the rise! π±
ππΏπ§ We recently visited Kaiapoi, North Canterbury, and had the pleasure of exploring an incredible new system with an amazing passive solar design. This system will serve as the venue for future workshops in Canterbury, showcasing the endless possibilities of sustainable farming. π
Passive solar systems harness the power of the sun to create a self-sustaining environment for plants and fish, reducing the need for external energy sources. This innovative approach aligns perfectly with our mission to promote sustainable practices and inspire others to embrace Aquaponics. ππΏπ
Stay tuned for updates on our upcoming workshops in Canterbury, where you'll have the opportunity to learn, engage, and be part of the Aquaponics revolution. Together, we can create a greener and more sustainable future! ππΏπ§
