Located in Northern Virginia, Friends of Homeless Animals has been serving the Washington metropolitan area since 1973. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) no-kill shelter dedicated to saving abandoned and abused dogs and cats. We provide rescue, medical care, rehabilitation, and adoption services in the Northern Virginia and Washington, DC metropolitan areas.

Hi everyone, I'm Aspen, a Hound mix. I’m a playgroup superstar! I absolutely thrive when surrounded by my dog friends, and I’ve become quite the social butterfly. I'm a breeze to walk, and I excel in the car. Due to some past trauma, I’m searching for a very understanding and compassionate home, where we can create a safe and loving space for me to heal and thrive. I’m longing for a forever home filled with patience and understanding—the kind of home where I can truly blossom into the good boy I know I can be. Please give me a chance, I am worth every ounce of effort and time.

Say Happy Birthday to our guy Oatmilk, who turns 5 years old today! He’s a 56lb male hound mix, and boy is he sweet. He’s gentle and soft and loves getting quiet affection. He likes other dogs and enjoys going for walks with a canine buddy. This is Dash, the FOHA Cat of the Week! He’s a 10-year-old, 10lb male domestic shorthair. This handsome guy is affectionate and friendly and enjoys cuddling up with his people. He likes to bird watch, ‘chat’ with his humans, and take lots of naps. He would do best in a quiet home with gentle kids and adults and has done well with other calm and respectful cats. Because Dash is over 8 years old, his adoption fee has been waived! Dash is also eligible for FOHA’s Foster Forward Program. To learn more about Dash, check out his bio:

Hi, I'm Ozzy, a Treeing Walker Coonhound and it's my birthday! I LOVE to play with balls and will even toss them myself. I'm very affectionate and eager to please! I am fearful of cars and would do best in a home without traffic noise or small children. I also need to be the only dog in the house.

Behind every happy tail is a community that cares. Pickle’s story is a beautiful reminder of what your compassion makes possible.

Pickle came to FOHA severely underweight and battling multiple chronic infections. After $900 of medical care and months of healing, Pickle’s health was restored. Then, came the moment every rescue dreams of, his forever family took him home. Today, Pickle enjoys sunshine, adventure, and all the love - proof that acts of care create a lifetime of joy.

This is Pearl, a sweet 5-month-old, 3lb female domestic shorthair! She’s new to FOHA and we’re still getting to know her – we’ll post more about her once we know more about her personality. But we do know that she needs to have a social cat companion, as all kittens under 6 months old at FOHA are required to go home with another kitten or to a home with another social cat. Hello friends, I’m Perdita, the FOHA Dog of the Week! I’m a 2-year-old, 65lb female Great Dane mix. My friends at FOHA say that I’m sweet and cuddly and love to curl up with my people. I like to go for car rides, and I know several commands like sit, lie down, and paw. I LOVE to go for walks and smell all the smells on the trail. I really like other dogs and love a good play session. I don’t love loud noises, and it can take me a little time to get used to new places, but I warm up pretty quickly.
