June is National Pet Preparedness Month!

Be sure you and your animal companions are ready in case of an emergency. Here are some top tips to help you prepare:

1. Create an Emergency Kit – Include food, water, medications, first aid supplies, medical history, vaccination records, toys and bedding.

2. ID and Microchip – Ensure your pet’s ID tags are up to date and their microchip registration is current.

3. Have an Evacuation Plan – Identify pet-friendly shelters and hotels in advance. Have carriers, leashes, collars ready. Create a backup plan in case you're not home during an emergency.

4. Use the Buddy System – Arrange with a trusted neighbor or friend to take care of your pets if you’re not home.

5. Stay Informed – Sign up for emergency alerts and follow local news for updates.

Being prepared can make all the difference in keeping your pets safe during unexpected events. For more tips, go to https://petfbi.org/how-to-protect-your-pet/disaster-preparedness-for-pets/.

Springtime often brings the threat of high winds and severe weather. Take precautions to keep your pets safe! 🐕🐈💨

• Be sure gates are closed and fences are secure before letting your dog outside.
• Check that collars are properly fitted, and leashes are securely attached.
• Secure exterior doors so they don’t accidentally blow open, allowing a pet to escape.
• Make sure your pet is wearing an ID tag.
• Keep a tight hold on the leash when walking. The sound of the wind or items being blown about can startle a pet.

If your lost pet is microchipped, immediately contact the microchip company to “red flag” them as missing and to be sure your contact information is current. This will prevent a shelter, rescue, or finder from trying to re-register the microchip to a new owner without your knowledge. 🐾

🐾 Lost pets may appear dirty, disheveled, or underweight. Yet, this doesn't necessarily indicate neglect or mistreatment. A pet’s appearance can change quickly when they are on their own in the elements, even for a brief time.

When a lost pet is assumed to be abandoned or neglected, efforts may focus on finding them a new home rather than seeking their rightful owners. These assumptions, though well-intentioned, can lead to detrimental consequences for a lost pet prolonging the pet's distress and denying a family the chance to be reunited with their missing family member. 🐈🐕🏠

🚨 PSA for pet owners! 🚨 When posting about your lost pet online, include your phone number for quick contact. But beware of scammers! To protect yourself:

• Consider using a temporary number or app, like Google Voice, to shield your personal number.

• If asked to prove your identity by providing a 6-digit code, this is a scam. Do not respond or provide the code.

• Meet in a safe, public place when arranging to return your pet.

• Remember, Pet FBI services are provided FREE of charge! If someone is representing themselves as Pet FBI and asking for a fee, this is a scam.

Protect yourself while searching for your lost pet! 🐾

Did you know there is a group of volunteers dedicated to reuniting lost pets by tracking down "dead-end" microchips? Meet the Microchip Hunters!

MICROCHIP HUNTERS 2023

In the year 2023, Microchip Hunters successfully handled a total of 920 'dead-end' cases, connecting with 613 owners, an impressive 67% success rate. It's worth noting that within this percentage, there were 127 cases where obtaining information posed challenges—whether due to uncooperative facilities, chips purchased from platforms like Amazon, difficulties in locating information at the facility, etc. If we exclude these 127 'impossible' cases, our outreach to owners increases significantly to an impressive 86%! The dedication and effort Microchip Hunter volunteers invest in reuniting animals is truly incredible.

Good information from our partners, Lost Dogs of America!

Dogs that get separated during a fire or disaster typically stay hidden nearby if not pursued or coerced out of the area, waiting until they feel it is safe to reappear. Additionally, these dogs may have suffered injuries during the fire or disaster, intensifying their levels of stress and fear.

Great advice from our partners at Lost Dogs of America.

Are These the Same Dog? YES!

Look for clues that scream “selfie alert!” when checking out photos. Reversed text, objects, or even a sneaky rearview mirror pointing the wrong way could be dead giveaways. It’s like being a detective, right?

Take a peek at these two photos, for example. See that tiny dark spot under the eye? It’s a good indicator that it’s the same dog. But watch out for details like the brown splotch near the eye patch – it might not be as clear in all the photos due to tricky angles. Read more here...

The Pet FBI Story

Pet FBI was founded in 1998 by Maresa Fanelli, a retired French professor looking for a way to consolidate information about lost and found pets. After a distressing experience trying to recover a lost cat, Fanelli conceived the idea of a free interactive online database for lost and found reports where worried pet owners and good Samaritans could connect quickly and efficiently.

Pet FBI was started in Columbus, Ohio, but has since expanded to cover the entire United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. It continues to be volunteer-run and posting a report is always free of charge.

For more information or to post a lost or found pet report, go to https://PetFBI.org.
