I am in need of another helper, someone to assist me once a week (either Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Sunday) from roughly 8:00am until 1:00pm in keeping Shelter Zutto-ARiGato clean and comfortable for its many feline residents. Like my other absolutely wonderful helpers (Keisha Lawrence, Ada Li and Sarah Hokke) s/he must be animal-loving and familiar with the colossal messes cats make: someone who has no problem with litter-boxes and the stuff that does not land in them.
All I can offer in compensation is a huge collection of beautiful, attention-seeking cats, heartfelt gratitude, high resolution photos of you at work (if you want them) and transportation to and from the closest train station (Misasagi Station on subway Kyoto, Shichijo eki on the Keihan or Kawaramachi Station).

I lost two longtime donors in May and now, today, yet another.

Since Covid, I've been falling behind every month. If I lower the quality of the food, the residents pay for it in sickness -- primarily in the form of dental disease and urinary crystals.

Matsubara is a sweet, shy solo of a cat. Despite being rescued (from under the Matsubara Bridge along the Kamogawa) as an adult feral, she has never so much as hissed at me. She loves to be caressed and kissed, eats enthusiastically, understands what a litter-box is for, and, though she and I have bonded, would, I am certain, benefit greatly by being homed. She does not appreciate the company of other cats. In the company of her kind, she withdraws, stops eating... cowers in dark corners. I have resorted to keeping her in an enclosure, but would love to see her with a Family of Her Own, preferably, a Family of Two, herself included.
If there is someone out there who is looking for loving companionship in feline form, Matsubara is the One for You. Please message me if interested in meeting.

Since the founding of Shelter Zutto-ARiGato in 2020, I have purchased two high-end (as close to industrial I could find) washing machines from local recycle centers, each, 70,000 yen. Both started to malfunction just after the six-month warranty. Repairs cost 30-40,000 yen each time... Time to buy new.
But new is frighteningly expensive. Still shopping...
But urine-saturated bedding continues to pile up and washing such stuff in coin laundries is both illegal and, frankly, horribly rude.
I would start a GoFundMe thingy but am really just too tired...

I want to thank everyone who helps fund what, thanks to COVID, is an ever-increasing challenge to sustain: the Miracle that is Shelter Zutto-ARiGato. Not for a second, not ever, is your support taken for granted. Every bag of food, every case of litter, every bowl, bed, cage, tower, toy, toilet, brush, scratchpad, vet visit, prescription.. I am filled with gratitude.

Dear All,
Since the founding of Shelter Zutto-ARiGato in August of 2021, I've discovered that caring for cats, the same cats, indoors, is considerably more expensive than caring for them outdoors (please know, I only ask for help with food, litter and medical, *nothing* related to utilities, insurance, property maintenance, transportation-related expenses, etc. etc.). That the population is aging has a lot to do with this...
Today I lost yet another cat, the stunningly beautiful Kirin. He was treated for urinary blockage on Saturday but succumb tonight, all the same. Counterbalancing my grief is the unexpected success I had moments ago (11pm) in finally, *finally* managing to get another sick resident into a cage, step-one in providing him with the medical care he desperately needs. Vet fees, though, keep throwing off my post-covid balancing act. I am, I admit, struggling ever more worryingly to make ends meet.
What would be most helpful at this point is for more people to commit to a Monthly Donation, even if small. If you can help -- and I know, I know, the timing is terrible -- here is how:

Taking care of a few hundred outdoor cats and taking care of the same individuals indoors is, I have discovered, a *totally* different operation. Medical issues, food allergies, water filters, litter boxes, property maintenance... (I am not even asking for help with utilities or taxes or insurance or gas)... And then, there's the issue of the remaining outside cats. I am still feeding 6 of 14 colonies after sunset and before dawn seven days per week, no matter the weather. And trapping on my own is extraordinarily difficult (and dangerous), especially in winter. Truthfully, I have nothing in Reserve at the end of each month, even when trapping is unsuccessful. I probably won't be able to keep this cat at the shelter. When she sees me, she doesn't meow, she doesn't wail, she screams, SCREAMS?! She's always in a different place but I always know just where by the screaming... I have no idea what her story is -- she appeared out of the blue about a month ago -- but she's clearly very, very distressed. At the very least, I can have her spayed, so that is what I'm going to try to do. Thursday. I don't dare attempt this project prior to my Monday-Tuesday teaching marathon but am posting this in advance in the hope that someone will volunteer to be her sponsor and give her a name.
