⭐️🐶 PUPPY CHRONICLES 🐶⭐️

I have not dropped off the face of the earth however I am aware I have been quieter then usual on here and that’s because I have been super busy behind the scenes with the youngest VIP’s in the house.

2 weeks ago, I welcomed into the world a gorgeous litter of cocker spaniel pups. This is my second generation of cockers so lots of planning went into these guys and even when you do everything right you can be thrown a little curve ball.

And there was a curve ball in this litter. A teeny tiny pup that was born with a strange wound/scar to his head which I honestly thought he would be a little cleftie but he isn’t.
And this little dude also has a wonky back leg which he is now using but is far from perfect.

Now in the first day of his life he dropped a massive 35g from his birth weight which is huge and to make matters that bit harder, mummy Albi wouldn’t let me handle him or really in the whelping den so the amount I was allowed to interfere was incredibly limited.

Anyway fast forward a couple of weeks, me up every 2 hours 🥴🥴 yes I am hugely sleep deprived as all my other guys are still here too and the cockapoo pups are needing entertained too, this little dude is still here and defiant as ever!

He is the first to have opened his eyes and at 2 weeks this little man is now only 213g which is still super teeny considering his brothers and sisters are all at 600-800g. He is also on his feet and can’t half shift around the whelping box so the thinking cap is on to make him a little jumper so he isn’t wasting energy on keeping warm as he doesn’t hold his temperature.

The room is warm enough as the fire is never off and the litter have access to their heat pad.

⭐️🐶⭐️🐶

Now there will be people on here saying why haven’t I intervened more or tube fed him etc and the honest answer is, not being able to get my hands on him was the first hurdle, it was mums first litter and I didn’t want to stress her out which could have then had a knock on to her interest in the litter.
He is taking the odd supplement feed but even this is a fight
He has had some liver water and is still on his puppy stim too but all of this is on his terms and as awful as it sounds, I am amazed he is still here however as long as he wishes to fight, I will support him as best as I can.

Likewise there may be others wondering why I haven’t put him to sleep. He has of course been seen by the vets and we are both in agreement that as he is gaining, isn’t suffering we will give him the benefit of the time for now and just see what happens.

🐶⭐️🐶⭐️🐶

If you would like to send this little man a thought and some healing, it would be greatly appreciated as always whilst he keeps me on my toes

🐾🐶 Puppies 🐾🐶

I am in full puppy mode here behind the scenes with the latest new arrivals all doing well and settling into life, whilst the fluffy demons aka cockapoos have loved having full reign of the house today whilst I have been tootling about.

Everytime I have stopped they have curled up on my feet for comfort and have gone where I have gone.
Now this is what I expect from young puppies and yet we expect puppies to leave and settle in a new home from the beginning.

Puppies and dogs are group animals, they expect that comfort as pups and when you watch puppies sleep they sleep in a pile, my adults still pile together rather then spread out unless you are my boy Floki who thinks sharing a bed is the worst thing going!

Yet when we bring our puppies away from their litter, their mum and the only people they have ever known it can be overwhelming, daunting and downright scary for some pups.
They need that comfort & support to find their feet and adapt to their new life.
YOU, their new guardians need to step up and into the role. The role of mum, the role of partnership, of playmate, sometimes you are just a comfort blanket or it can feel like such.

Yet I see posts all the time asking how quick puppies can be left, why don’t they settle, why can’t I go from room to room without my new pup….the list is kind of endless.

The answer to all of these questions is time.

Give your puppy time to adapt, to build their confidence up and don’t rush the process.

I promise you that there will come a day when your puppy chooses to chill in their own space, to have the confidence with the right guidance to being left.

So take your time with your puppy and step into the role of full guardian to offer them the partnership for the journey moving forward.

🐶⭐️ PUPPY CHRONICLES ⭐️🐶

An extra update too.

Now as a responsible breeder, if a home fails then I offer lifetime back up for that puppy regardless of time past.
I will however help and support new guardians as best I can to come to a solution to make sure the placement works.

Why do I offer such?

Well first and foremost it is my responsibilty to step up for that puppy that I have planned to bring into that world.
These pups are part of a legacy and i love to see them go off on their new adventures with their new guardians.

Secondly if a home fails- which I try to avoid at all costs as it’s not fair on the dog in question nor for any party involved and it’s something I have been accused of late intentionally doing then that dog is coming back to somewhere they know.
They aren’t being passed from pillar to post nor are they landing in rescues and taking places away from those individual dogs that truly need that rescue space.

The day that I know I can no longer offer such support to new guardians is the day that I hang up my breeding hat.

⭐️🐾⭐️🐾⭐️

Last year I had a cocker spaniel litter and out of the 9, 4 families have struggled with the result being 2 boys being returned.

The other 2 have received support and continue to do so to make sure the placements work.

Why has this happened? I am not sure and I have racked my brains over this as there was nothing out of the ordinary with this litter. it was a repeat mating as the first litter were such a dream and continue to be so for their guardians.

With this learning curve it also means that I will be tightening up who I place cockers in particular with moving forward. I am careful with all matches however I will be more so moving forward and this is to avoid such issues from occurring again in the future.

All spaniels, whether cockers, Sprockers and springers that I offer moving forward will only go to homes that are experienced with the breed, active homes and willing to participate in a form of dog sport.
The springers will be docked and therefore suitable for working homes also (working on this for the cockers too)

⭐️🐾⭐️🐾⭐️🐾

Max who is photographed below is one of the youngsters that has come back and is waiting patiently for his second chance. He is at the lovely age of 8 months and anyone with an adolescent dog will know what I mean by that! This is the age many such individuals find themselves land in rescue as it’s the most trying age our canines go through and pushes everyone to their limits.

Lots of potential to do something but not serious gundog work as he squeaks when excited and this trait is going no where it would seem. It could however be utilised to keep his mind ticking over and for fun.

He has been working on some basics since coming back such as lead manners, crate training and recall and this next week he will be introduced to some retreive and scent work to see what his preferences are.

His mum was an agility girlie before her leg injury and I have no doubt this boy would excel in this area if someone is looking for a project.

🐾⭐️🐾⭐️🐾

As with any puppy moving forward, the longer they remain here and the more training they receive the more their price goes up. It will never be lowered from the base price that is set.

🎉🥂 Happy New Year 🥂🎉

2023 has certainly been a mixed bag of a year. It has brought with it a lot of up’s and downs.

Lots of shifts and massive change. It’s not been the best at times due to the loss of 3 of my own VIP’s which have left a huge void.
Everyone thinks it’s easier when you have other canines in your life however this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Likewise the year has ended dark for the canine industry which has rallied as best they can around the XL bully ban which has been devastating to say the least and yet another breed let down by humans.

We have so much to learn.

Alas it’s time for further shifts, for new adventures and new beginnings and with that I wish you all the very best to 2024.

I have lots up my sleeve for the coming year but no surprises just yet 😊

For now I leave you with the cuties that are the toy poodles currently giving me the run around

🎄🎅🏻 Christmas top tips 🎄🎅🏻

I know we are all getting into this festive period and it’s often a busy time of year that we sometimes forget that some of our canines need additional support to get through what can be a very stressful time.

Each Sunday before Xmas I will drop a top top that will make sure you are set up for success, regardless of the age of your canine.

🎄🎄🎄🎄

☃️ Safe spaces are vital for success ⛄️

I have seen lots of individual posts done on this subject already and a safe space is paramount for keeping your canine guardians at ease as well as any guests.
Energy is always heightened around Christmas. It’s exciting for most, others may be feeling over-whelmed by it all and mental burn out is huge.
Creating a safe space for your canine guardian to have as a retreat to recharge their own energy or for some much needed down time will make all the difference to a successful Christmas.
It can be a crate, puppy pen, baby gated room or for some a closed off area.

What’s important to remember is that when your canine is in this space they are allowed to enjoy it, with only their main humans going into the space, not any visitors or children.
This format of management is the difference from a canine that gets into an over-aroused pickle to a dog that remains calmer throughout the season.

🌟🐶 Puppy top tips 🐶🌟

Puppies are adorable aren’t they, let’s face it they are and it can be a fun-filled adventure.

Often we go into owning a puppy with a set idea or picture built up in our mind on what it will be like, how it will be.

It is certainly a journey, perhaps though, it’s not always like you imagined.

Puppies are adorable but they can be hard work too, however puppyhood is easy as to what follows…adolescence! More on that later though 😊

For today let’s look at some top tips to get you and your puppy off to an amazing start.

🐾 Building connection 🐾

This is one of the most important tips I can give you, and connection doesn’t come overnight. Get this foundation right and you will be well on your way on a journey of a lifetime building up a partnership with your canine guardian.
There is no rush to do everything, you want your puppy to feel safe, secure and see you as their safety net.
You take over the role of mum and littermates when you bring puppy home and therefore they are going to want to be with you. Everything is done slowly and gradually, with some of course needing more reassurance then others, others who may be independent and the idea of a cuddle sees you getting a look of distaste!
Get to know your puppy as the individual it is, and just spend time getting to know each other.

🐾 Sleep and chill time 🐾

Did you know puppies should be getting 16-18 hours rest a day! Yes you have read that right and no that’s not just for certain breeds, that’s across the board and covers your higher energy dogs too!
An over-tired puppy is like an over-tired toddler, they don’t just go well let’s sit and chill, they get naughtier, and naughtier until you intervene.
They maybe get more destructive, more nippy, and generally just more of a whirlwind leaving you thinking what have I done.
Don’t feel bad utilising a crate or puppy pen to enforce rest and chill time. It’s needed and it’s important.
If your puppy is getting over the top, pop them in their safe spaces with something calming to do such as a long lasting chew, kong, lickimat, snuffle mat etc. and leave them be. If they need that security of you being close then you can keep a bed close to you and I find popping your foot on it often helps puppy settle.
If your have children in the home, no one is to disturb puppy when they are napping or sleeping and you want to build on this to avoid conflict potentially later down the line.
Would you like to be prodded and poked when resting? If the answer is no, then it’s the same for our canines.

🐾 Be your puppies advocate 🐾

You are the advocate for your puppy, and if something doesn’t sit right with you or you have a gut feeling that something isn’t right, then speak up and say so.
Your puppy is relying on you to keep them safe, to make the choices we do to create the healthiest and well rounded canine we can.
They can’t speak up like us, they use behaviour to voice their interactions. This often gets ignored or brushed off as being stubborn, awkward, naughty the list is endless but it could just be your dog asking for help. Wanting to be heard.
Dogs are incredibly subtle in their signals, it is not in their interest to cause injury and therefore a dog will not go straight to a growl or a bite, they will be communicating with you in the format of subtle signals long before you get to the more obvious behaviours.
Learn to speak canine, to be your dogs advocate.

Enjoy the adventure with your puppy and set up for success. Where is the fun in constant failure, it doesn’t feel good when us humans are set up to fail. It’s pretty awful to say the least. Yet it is still seen widely as ‘part and parcel of learning for our dog’ but it doesn’t have to be.
Lots of little wins are going to get you a lot further then failure after failure.

It’s not a breed I offer and as much as I love them I cannot find a line healthy enough to bring them into my programme. That’s not to say they are not out there as I know some fabulous breeders with amazing dogs.

So if cavalier is your breed of choice or the cavapoo then keep this new disease in mind and make sure it’s on your health test tick list to make sure you are getting the healthiest puppy your can.

⭐️🐶 Foundations 🐶⭐️

Now there are plenty of foundation topics I could go to next for preparing you with the life of your puppies, however this is a topic that has raised its head in numerous conversations with both my puppy parents and other training clients.

This foundation piece of theory is a huge puzzle piece and yet is being overlooked and not being handed out in far too many cases so grab yourself a cuppa, and have a read

⭐️🐶 Settling in your new puppy 🐶⭐️

I felt this was a nice follow on post following yesterday's live where I talked all about expectations.

It is exciting bringing home your puppy or it should be. In many cases it is well planned, and you have had time to prepare. You have been out and got the puppy necessities to get you started so let's talk the practicalities of bringing home your new puppy guardian.

Please remember it is a HUGE deal for your new puppy. It is leaving the only place it has ever known, its litter mates and mum as well as the human that welcomed him/her into the world. It is losing its safety net and guess what you are going to step into that role.

The role of siblings

The role of mum

The role of teacher, caregiver, safety blanket.

You are becoming your puppy guardians world.

Now if your puppy is coming from a questionable start, where their beginning wasn't a place of safety but survival, you will see many different challenges to that of a puppy from a competant breeder.

But what does the first 24-72 hours look like?

Your puppy should wish to explore their new environment. If they are confident individuals, many simply slot in and are happy to take it all in their stride. They explore, they get to know you without the comfort of their familar surroundings and you are there for reassurance.
They should not be pestered or pulled around, simply allowed to take everything in at their own pace, and this should always be respected.

Even though its super exciting, keep visitors to an absolute minimum to none at all. Your priority is bonding and getting your puppy used to you.

Remember don't rush.

This stressful phase means a reset is needed and lots of calm down time is needed to offer that reset and initially settle your puppy in as well as introducing them to your new routines for them too.

Tomorrow I will drop some top tips around sleeping and the bedtime routine with your puppy as this is one of the biggest pitfalls so many drop into or stress over.

Stick around and keep following as there is lots more to come at the puppy foundation level.

🐶⭐️ PUPPY CHRONICLES ⭐️🐶

Update in the hooligans!

06/11/2023

🐶⭐️ There is no need to rush ⭐️🐶

It’s human nature to always be rushing. We rush through life, constantly chasing the tomorrow.
That tomorrow that is never actually promised to any of us.

And it is no different to puppy guardianship.

There seems to be this feeling of failure if our puppy isn’t doing all the things after only being in their new home with you for a couple of months.

The amount of people I have come and view puppies and want to know why they aren’t walking on a lead when I still have them til they are 16 weeks or why they are still having the odd accident at this stage.

I see the same as a behaviourist. Guardians in a panic because their puppy isn’t fully trained by 16 weeks or 6 months.

The truth of the matter is I am in no rush with my puppies, whether that is a litter or whether it is one of my own.

Why I hear you asking?

Because they all get it with consistency and time. Yes some get it quicker then others but that doesn’t mean that individual puppy is failing or the human is as a handler.

What I want from my puppies is often very different to what others see as important and we will come to that more in upcoming posts.

Puppy hood isn’t a 6 week tick box course, it’s not a 6-month journey…it’s a minimum of 2 years investment with lots of ups and downs along the way to shape that young puppy into a graceful adult who is ready to take on the world.

So if you are feeling down because your puppy is behind, or there is those feelings of failure creeping in.
You are not!! You are on track and your puppy will come out the other side of this journey.

Stop rushing and enjoy your puppy for the individual they are

Keep following as I drop more top tips and advice to puppyhood

🐶🐾 At the beginning 🐾🐶

There is so much to this foundation layer of puppy guardianship I will spread it out over the next few posts rather then all in 1!

You have your puppy home, you have hopefully chosen a breeder wisely that has made sure the foundations of good genetics, health, upbringing and temperament have been carefully thought out. Huge topics in themselves and I will delve into these in upcoming posts as there is still so much to do in terms of education for new puppy parents as finding your puppy companion is a huge deal.

The first top tip I give to all puppy parents is start creating a long lasting bond. This relationship will become a partnership in time and you need to put the effort in from the get go as it is a living thing you are signing up for not an already programmed robot.

Bonding with your puppy doesn’t mean it’s a free for all, nor does it mean regimented structure and routine which can cause it’s own array of issues further down the line.

Bonding exercises could be:

⭐️ Bite size training sessions. Remember puppies have baby brains so no more than 2-3 minutes at a time.

⭐️ Playtime. I am all for playing with your puppy. You have taken it away from its littermates and it is up to you to work on that bite inhibition and the best way for that is through appropriate play sessions.

⭐️ Snuggle sessions. Puppies need lots of sleep and so snuggling up and enjoying the cuddles is equally as rewarding for your puppy as it is relaxing for you.

⭐️ Massage time and/or grooming time.
If you have bagged yourself a fluffy puppy that needs regular grooming then this can all start on your knee and should be enjoyable for your pup.
Starting with massage is a fabulous way to create a lasting bond too.
It also gets your puppy used to being touched all over and allows you to know what your puppy is comfortable with and what feels normal.

⭐️ Simply 1-1 time. I allow my puppies to follow me all over the house. I want them with me, many would say this shouldn’t be allowed however for me I have no dogs with Separation issues and if I have a puppy that will only settle sleeping wrapped around my head that’s where we start because I know as their confidence grows they will build that independence with it.
Likewise I can also keep an eye on them if I am busy doing anything.

So if you have welcomed a puppy into your home in recent days or weeks, this is your starting point. Take the time to Create a powerful bond that is the basis of your partnership moving forward.
Don’t have this and you will sharp run into struggles during the hardest life phase of all…adolescence!

🐶⭐️ PUPPY CHRONICLES 🐶⭐️

It’s been a busy month with pupsters flying the nest onto new adventures, which is always a lovely moment as they get to a point where they are just ready to go and all these guys have hit this point.

So far we have waved farewell to:

💖 Bracken, Flower and Juniper
💙 Kola and Oak

The rest all wait patiently for their new humans and whilst they wait continue to cause absolute mayhem!!

We have also had cocker boy, Cyclone return due to no fault of his own and although an older boy he is searching too, whilst keeping up to date with his training and running with the adult gang to learn some needed manners.

As always it’s super busy behind the scenes and the gorgeous Scottish Weather is keeping us on our toes.
