Once upon a time, in a land far far away, there was the most beautiful princess. She enjoyed many activities including hiking, rolling in grass, eating dead things, and sporting only the most fashionable attire. One year, in the early spring, the entire world shut down. A disease ravaged the towns, reducing the available humans that could provide b***y scratches and shovel delicious treats into her mouth. Confined to her home, the princess became discouraged by the current situation. No longer could she galavant about the mountains, or scrub the grass with her back. No longer were people fawning over how amazing she looked in brown biothane and rose gold. More than once a day she would walk by her leashes, if only to remind her servants that she still enjoyed going for walks. The princess knew she had to do something, she had to protect her village. People refusing to social distance were given strong verbal warning which included throwing her head back while barking, foot stomps and lip puffs. She knew proper nutrition was key to staying healthy at this time. Every night around 4:30pm, she would sing the song of her people until her dad got the hint. He would serve only the finest cuts of meats in one of her seven Nourish Stoneware bowls (also from ). The princess knew that, though times were bleak, they would soon turn around. When it did, she would be ready. You can be ready too! Shop and use code LEILANI for the gracious princess discount!

Fueled my mental health by sunrise walking an isolated forest road. No regrets going there instead of the busy trail behind our house! Nox is turning out to be quite the adventure cat! He was very pleased with my cheesy snacks. I’m thinking he needs a WILD kitty collar 🙊

THIS! Lani art by the wonderfully talented and generous artist 😭😍🤍. I can’t even find words to describe what this means to me. I have been trying all day to type a caption. With all the chaos and sadness in the world right now, two incredible ladies have brought me to happy tears.
In order to give back, offered free pet portraits in exchange for a donation to select pet rescue organizations. Being a small Instagram account and a freelance illustrator, I don’t think she dreamed it would explode the way it did! With a modest goal to raise $500, she just broke that times 20! For real, she raised over $10,000! We are inspired and proud of a person we’ve never met in real life.
Lee-Ann () (who strangely I have also never met in real life, though I feel like I’ve known her for years!) found this account, and she would like to donate on our behalf. *Spoiler alert*
I cried.
After a year an a half of illness, injury, loss, bad news, and a pandemic; this means the world. I am fortunate to know such a beautiful person, inside and out. Don’t forget to tell others what they mean to you.
So, this little Lani piece, I love it. For the art. For benefitting rescue. For the friendship it symbolizes.
(Pet portraits are closed, but I encourage you to support her art!)

Being an “introvert” means that I refuel myself by spending time alone, in my own head. It means certain social (especially group) situations drain me. The “stay at home” order seems like a delightful prospect for a person like me. My excitement for today was changing out of PM pajamas into daytime sweats.
Except being an introvert does not mean I’m a homebody. I mean, for the most part, I am. However, my mental health relies on the solitude and quietness I experience with my dog on the mountain trails. Hiking has become a sort of release for me (and I’m sure the exercise aspect plays a big part). Being on the trail is bonding time for Lani and I. I miss it. I miss the fresh air, the euphoric sensation when a hike has been completed. I miss having a tired, snuggly pup once we get home. I miss DOING things.
Even my work life involves being on my feet and active. Daily, I rush around caring for animals, knowing that I’m providing them a good life. It’s my career, it’s my livelihood. Even days that are hard, I seem to find balance in the meaningful moments with the critters.
So, this stay at home order, I’m OVER IT. Being in a higher risk group, I can’t venture out. I’m grateful for the laws in place to protect my job and finances. I’m soooo thankful for my coworkers, who have picked up the extra slack. I miss my work animals. I miss being active.

Thanks for listening to my whiney post.

Here is Lani in her pjs, expressing how unimpressed she is by having to stay home.

I am not the person mass purchasing toilet paper and surgical masks. Nor am I the person ignoring the current situation and risk posed to a person with a comprised immune system. I AM the person staring at the girl with the silly ear and refraining from laughing while I snap the picture. You guys. I love this girl so damn much.

I can’t wait to feel well enough to be back on the trails. What is Monday without a mountain?
Brown biothane + rose gold hardware is not a combo I would picked. Thankfully, has way better taste than I do and chose this for Lani and I’m SO glad she did, it’s so classically dreamy! 😍
Use our code LEILANI and get your timeless (and easy to clean) collar + leash combo!

Also special shoutout to / for never tiring of my incessant worrying about picture quality. I gave her a nice shoutout last week and Instagram archived it for me 🙄

except I’m totally going to brag.
Today we enjoyed a new , a place where dogs can safely explore their environment. This required us to walk through a pasture with two adorable Scottish Highland cows, a slew of chickens and some baby bunnies.
Though interested in the chickens and bunnies, she happily looked to me for treats (oddly enough she mostly ignored the cattle).
Once we got outside the pasture, It was safe for me to unleash her. The host was showing us the areas of the farm. All of a sudden, Lani u-turned and followed her nose back toward the pasture area. I waited 1..2..3.. seconds before calling “Lani come!”
ON A DIME she whipped around and eagerly came prancing back toward me. She did this without the aid of an e-collar. She did this even though she was very interested in the chickens. She did this because she knew reinforcement would be delivered.
The Sniffspot host said “wow! She listens really well!” I beamed. THIS is why I carry with me a treat pouch. THIS is why my hands smell like salmon, hotdogs, and tripe all the time. THIS is why we practice practice practice. Lani is NOT one of those dogs easily redirected once on a scent. I’m very proud of her. I’m proud of our teamwork and the time we’ve put into making her the well rounded pup she is today!
She got some tonight (see my stories) Gold star Lani!

Apparently today is so I’m throwing it back to this gem.
One of the most difficult hikes I’ve done to date. I almost gave up more than once. Had I done so, I would have missed these epic views and more importantly, a sweet moment of solitude with my ♥️
I accomplished this beast and I did it without a ponytail 💁🏽‍♀️
You know I’m a “leash your dog” crusader, but I wasn’t always. This was back before I had a sensitive dog, before I acknowledged the real danger of dogs near cliffs or encountering wildlife. It was before I “knew better”. Even though I always leashed up if we saw anyone coming (dog or not). Even though we hike before most humans are awake (doesn’t apply to wildlife!) I still advocate for the leash. It is not perfection we strive for, but acknowledging our mistakes and working to improve. Please learn this lesson the easy way and not the hard.

It goes without saying, the humans enjoyed this Christmas wedding photoshoot more than the canines. Toddy wanted to skip the ceremony and move straight to the honeymoon. Lani just wanted to fast forward to the buffet table.
:
In other news, Lani and Toddy played for the first time today. That’s right! Each of them have initiated play in the past, but being on leash/on a trail has never given us the opportunity to let them play properly. Both can be “a little much” and with Toddy being so small, we wanted to be as careful as possible. Today, they shared their first dance as a married couple; filled with play bows, b***y bumps and spin moves. Lani seemed to know to bump him gently. When the tumble got to be too much for Toddy, he let Lani know and she listened to his cues well.
