Do you ever wonder how we prepare your queen bee orders? Jack has been harvesting for the past two days and tirelessly grafting queens. Queen rearing is no easy task—it involves meticulous planning and careful record-keeping of the conditions in each mating yard. Thinking about the fact that we have more than 600 boxes like these in different location, Jack has repeated this process over 1,000 times.
We’re working hard, just like the bees.

We're so glad to see Spotty doing so well and continuing to nourish the hive with her offspring. She will keep contributing this year, and we’ll be grafting stock from her line later this week.
Queen rearing is part of the art of beekeeping. 🐝🐝🐝🐝
At the start of this season, we'll begin grafting endlessly!!! (just joking about doing it endlessly!) to produce queen bees.
The weather, timing, and schedule are crucial, and every part must be followed precisely. Nothing can be missed.🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
The first swarm is right behind our yard—our first of the season. A neighbour who hosts our beehives has a strong Caucasian colony, and they’ve just swarmed.
🐝Swarming and plant growth are early signs that tell beekeepers spring has begun.
🐝Another busy half-year ahead—let’s keep up the hard work!!!!

When packed up for winter, beekeepers typically take several steps to ensure the survival of their bees. These steps may include:
🐝Feeding: As discussed, providing supplemental pollen and sugar water to ensure the bees have enough food to sustain them through the winter.
🐝Insulation: Beehives may be insulated to help retain heat and protect the colony from harsh winter weather conditions.
🐝Reducing Entrance Size: Beekeepers often reduce the size of hive entrances to prevent heat loss and intrusion by pests such as mice.
🐝Disease check: Various of disease can weaken bee colonies, especially during winter. Beekeepers may check/test their hives for disease before winter to help ensure the health of the colony.
🐝Ventilation: Adequate ventilation is important to prevent moisture buildup within the hive, which can lead to mold and disease.
These practices help bee colonies survive the winter months and emerge strong and healthy in the spring.

What happens if you can't put your newly bought queen bee straight into your hive when the weather doesn't allow you to do so in a few days? See how and what we do in such situations.

If the bees are residing inside a structure, we refer to this task as a 'cutout.' Sometimes it can be easy, while other times it is complicated. Watch how we dealt with this bee colony inside a possum box.
