Beautiful Karen isn’t one to let others know just how stunning she is because she’s so shy. This lovely girl isn’t very sociable around people or other dogs. While she’s been with us for a while now, she has been hesitant to tip her paw about her full personality.

Things we do know about Miss Karen – she is super food motivated and a notorious counter-surfer. Bakers beware! If you turn your back for a moment, she’s likely to swipe a prize! Karen knows how to use the dog door and will follow a housemate outside. Now sometimes getting her back in can be a challenge because she doesn’t like sudden movements. Karen has warmed up to my husband more than me – even though I bake the cookies she loves!

Karen really lights up when she’s playing with a crinkle toy, those are her absolute favorites; especially those where you put in an empty water bottle. Be prepared for a lot of bottle replacements with this girl around.

It seems inconsistent that this shy girl can be so very vocal! Apartment life is not in her future. Her ideal home is one with a yard, a big fluffy dog bed, maybe a canine companion so she can follow and a quiet place so she can acclimate and learn to be herself. Karen is a diamond in the rough and requires patience to help her adjust.

Who doesn’t love Bacon?! Well, this variety is a big handsome white and fawn greyhound with a sweet kissy spot on the top of his masked head. Having been in a home before he has excellent manners, doesn’t get on furniture, walks nicely on lead, and will tell you EXACTLY what he wants and when! In return - Bacon knows commands like “drop”, “stay”, “come” (most of the time), “down”, “go outside”, “do your business”, “kennel up”, “no”, “uh-uh”, “go to bed”, “go for a walk”.

Routine is very important to this boy – and top among that is timing of meals and treats. Bacon is exceptionally food motivated and tries to be helpy during food prep. While he is a tall fella, he is not one to counter-surf and will wait somewhat patiently nearby.

Toys are quite fun and playing with a ball in the backyard is quite a spectacle! His helicopter tail gets to spinning when he has his favorite squeaky and he’ll add a zoomie if there’s room. Outside loves to chase a ball with reckless abandon and brings it back to be tossed again. Naturally after these bursts of energy he is ready for a powernap!

The adage “let sleeping dogs lie” is extremely important with respect to Bacon. He suffers from sleep startle, so everyone in the house needs to be fully aware of this trait. One must always make sure he raises his lovely head and makes eye contact before approaching his bed. Additionally, other pets or people should not step on his bed as he may growl and react. For this reason, we recommend that Bacon not live with children. At night he would do well to sleep in the room with his people, likely in a crate or x-pen. That way no one can accidentally step on his bed or wake him from a deep slumber.

Bacon loves to be loved on and will come up for hugs and kisses. He’s sweet with his kisses in return. He can get really excited for walks, food and when you come home – and may paw at you for attention. He can be trusted to have free roam when no one’s home, or be in a kennel or x-pen – he’s ok with all the options.

We feel Bacon is best suited as an only dog in a home with people to adore and a yard for playing. While he has lived with other greyhounds and medium sized dogs in close quarters, it’s not an ideal environment. Bacon is a lovely fella who wants nothing more than to have people to adore and give them a lifetime of joy.

Slugger, aka Plugger, is a fawn male born December 4, 2020. Slugger is an Australian hound. He should not live with cats or small animals, but would do best with a large dog friend.

I like big boys and I cannot lie! Nico is a big gentle giant with a stunning shiny tuxedo coat. He recently retired from coyote hunting in Corrales, NM. He’s a gorgeous mix of Irish Wolfhound, Borzoi, and Greyhound and weighs in at 105 lbs. His former owner said he is an “alpha” but here in his GALT foster home, he hasn’t shown any signs of that, living peacefully inside with other hounds ranging from 38 to 78 pounds (both a male and females). Outside, we segregate him from the smaller and senior hounds for safety and segregate him at feeding time. Nico walks well on a harness and collar/leash combo and is very well mannered unless a rabbit hops by (and will pull in these cases). Nico is a sociable hound at our weekly pack walks and he has been a perfect patio dining companion at local restaurants. Everyone he meets falls in love with this handsome hound.
Having lived his first years in an outdoor kennel, we (his foster family) are working on getting him 100% on house training and not counter surfing; his forever family will need to continue with good routines and structure to help him continue good habits. He is very food motivated which makes training easier. He is an excellent and non-picky eater and earns his “bowl cleaner award” at every meal.
He is a bit of a Velcro boy and follows his people around and loves to be pet. He is normally quiet and has made an excellent work from home office mate; he will roo along with his foster pack though and has a lovely baritone voice. He is the most compliant hound we have ever had during needed care activities like taking pills, getting groomed, taking a bath, wearing a cone (after his neuter), wearing a muzzle when needed, and for the Vet (our clinic LOVES him and can’t wait for his visits).
Nico got the best of all of his breed makeup, he got the sweetness of the Irish Wolfhound, the tall slender elegance of the Borzoi, and the calm content disposition of the greyhound. His forever family is going to be quite lucky to call this boy their own. His ideal forever home will have a nice big yard and a large pack mate or two.

Hi! My name is Bruce (2.5 yrs) and I'm the sweetest, most loyal hound. Foster mom calls me Boss Dog Bruce; she wants me to have some street cred to go with my sweetness.

My pastimes include following my foster parents closely from room to room, chasing furry critters in the backyard, zoomies, playing and tossing toys, and naps on the couch. I'm a roacher, so you'll often see me sleeping belly up, legs in the air. When it comes to my weekly nail trim, I'll lie still for foster mom to dremel my nails, as long as foster dad keeps the treats flowing.

I enjoy car rides, activities, and daily walks where I can sniff and explore. On walks, I'm always looking out for rabbits or squirrels to pursue, and of course the best smells to sniff. Since I'm a clever boy, I prefer mental stimulation such as working on puzzle toys and daily engagement activities with my humans.

My ideal forever home includes an adult who primarily works from home or is retired, a yard for zoomies and a confident dog who will play with me.

In short, if you're looking for a Velcro, loyal and loving adventure buddy, I might be the one for you!

As told to Bruce's Foster Parents

Skye, aka Clover Door, is a fawn female born May 3, 2020. Her sire is Zambora Brockie and her dam is Soltador. Skye is an Australian hound and has 24 races to her credit.

Skye is a friendly and active girl – she loves to play with toys! She is a bit too excitable to live with young children. If it runs, she will chase – so no cats, small dogs or other critters. She enjoys going on a walk and will get anxious if she encounters a squirrel or bunny. Skye would do well with another medium to large dog.

Loki is a greyhound/saluki mix who had a bit of a rough start, and now he’s ready to find his forever home. He’s a smart, happy boy with a goofy spirit that will make you laugh and melt your heart with his gentle nature.

Loki is a social butterfly at heart and he thrives when surrounded by other dogs. His canine friends not only bring out his playfulness, they also provide him with a sense of reassurance. His doggy pals give him the confidence he sometimes needs, making him feel secure.

His soulful eyes hold a world of love and he’s looking for a forever home that understands that sometimes he needs a bit of time to get used to new things. Once you earn his trust, he will follow you from room to room, looking for love and pets. If you are standing at a counter and you feel a snoot to the backside, that is just Loki telling you he is nearby.

He loves to make a ‘nest’ in the living room each night. Pulling any towels, pillows, blankets and clothing he can find throughout the house to join his pile of toys. He isn’t destructive, he just loves to gather things. On the days that he is more active (playing with the dogs or walks), he tends to do this less.

Loki is lovely in a kennel. I have left him for up to 5 hours with no trouble at all. I am not certain he should be left to free roam in the house due to his curiosity. It may be fine if he is confined to an area where items are out of reach.

Loki is a sweet soul, who just wants to be by your side and be a part of the family/pack. Loki needs a home with other dogs and a yard to run and play.

Sheila is a very friendly, happy and playful dog. She has lots of energy and loves to chase squeaky tennis balls in the yard. She has an adorable black, super soft coat. She loves to be cuddled and petted. Toys make her very happy. Sheila wants all the toys – the squeakier the better…and she will share! Sheila loves to go on walks. When she first arrived, she pulled a lot while on leash; with lots of walks under her belt, she has gotten so much better. We have not had her in close proximity to any cats or small dogs. We have seen both small dogs and cats while out walking and she has no reaction to either. She is looking for rabbits, afterall!
She has figured out the dog door and will go out when she wants, though mostly has decided that she likes being indoors. Sheila loves people and always wants to be next to someone. She is good around other dogs, but she mostly loves people. She would be fine as an only dog – more attention for her! She also loves a good car ride. Errands to run? Sheila would love to keep you company!
When we leave the house, we put Sheila in her crate. Our other two greyhounds stay in the bedroom with her and she has done fine for the few hours we are gone. Sheila sleeps in her crate at night – we leave the door open; she is comfortable in there and goes right to sleep. She is also an early riser – yes, even on Saturdays. Once she is walked and fed, she usually plays a bit and then goes in for her afternoon nap.
Shelia will be a wonderful addition for a family looking to add a joyful, happy-go-lucky companion dog with people to love, a bed for napping and plenty of toys for more playtime!

Oakley is a loveable, gentle soul looking for his forever home!
Oakley lived as a stray for a while, and now loves to be in a home more than anything. You can tell he’s grateful to have a good meal and a soft bed. He enjoys short walks in the neighborhood and exploring the backyard in his foster home. Meal time is an exciting event for Oakley and his favorite time of the day. He is not a picky eater and will do anything for a treat, although he does need to follow a special diet to help protect his kidneys. To entertain himself, Oakley loves chewing on bones or toys. He will follow you around the house from room to room in search of affection, as he seems to feel comforted by the presence of humans or other dogs in the same room.
He gets along great with other dogs, big or small, and is very quiet and easygoing. He is not the least bit protective or aggressive about other dogs approaching him. For these reasons, he could likely live as an only dog or with other dogs of any type. However, he has a strong prey drive for other small mammals, so it’s best to keep him away from squirrels and cats.
Oakley sleeps for most of the day, and is generally calm, though his goofy side does emerge when he sees you grab a leash or if he hears you getting his food ready! He will quietly whine to let you know if he needs to go outside. A short walk in the morning and evening is usually enough to tire him out. Overall, a quiet, loving home would probably be best for Oakley, as he still has some fear of loud noises, such as fireworks and thunder.
If you’re looking for a sweet, gentle dog who will be your loyal companion, Oakley is the perfect dog for you!

Last summer, during scorchingly high temperatures, Zeke was found dumped in a landfill, along with several other hounds. Zeke was the first one caught and rescued by GALT. He was in rough shape so he went directly to the vet where he was found to be emaciated, dehydrated, plagued by ticks, intestinal parasites, heartworm, and a tick-borne disease.

When we picked him up he was one sick and very weak puppy. He slept 90% of the time, getting up only for meals and potty breaks. Although he gained weight fairly quickly, he was in treatment for many months for his other ailments. With excellent medical care, good nutritious food, and a lot of TLC, Zeke's eyes brightened, his energy slowly returned, and with it his sweet, quirky personality emerged.

Eventually, Zeke discovered toys but he decided that all stuffies needed to be torn apart and eaten. A tough Kong Wubba, a Benebone, and a stuffed Kong quickly replaced the soft toys and he now chews happily on them all. He willingly shares his toys with his housemate and he learned from her that the yard is the potty spot so he was housebroken quickly. Walking politely on a leash soon became second nature to him and now he loves his daily walks.

We know what time it was when Zeke’s very accurate internal alarm clock tells him it’s mealtime, or treat time. He animates while joyfully anticipating meals which he gobbles down, leaving his bowl spotlessly clean. Then he checks his housemate's bowl and licks that bowl clean too. He knows that he gets his treats on his bed and he never leaves a single crumb behind.

Soft beds are his second favorite thing after eating. He fluffs his bed until it’s just right then plops down for a long nap, usually roaching on his back at least part of the time. He loves his bed so much that he’s on it in most of the pictures I’ve taken of him.

Zeke is interested in the squirrels and bunnies in the backyard but doesn’t really chase them. Surprisingly, he failed his cat test yet he was fine with a Yorkie! He also got along well with a Golden Retriever that came to visit for a few days.

Zeke is a tail-wagging, friendly love bug. He’s happy to meet new people and thrives on affection. He barks or nudges one of us with his long nose when he needs to go outside. This boy loves car rides and he settles down nicely for the trip. He marches right into the vets office and happily greets every vet tech and the doctor, too. He also has the most beautiful rooing voice - he throws his head back and sings loudly to express his emotions.

He’s a handsome boy, too, with his white ticked coat and beautiful brindle patches. His teeth are in excellent condition as well and he reluctantly allows them to be brushed. He’s put his past where it belongs, behind him, and shows no signs of emotional damage as a result of it. He is a registered, tattooed racer but has no record of racing. Zeke’s ideal home would have one or more dogs, plenty of soft beds, and someone to adore him, which is easy to do.

Elliot is a ~4 yr old Saluki-greyhound mix who was found in a landfill with other dogs. Despite living in circumstances that are hard to imagine, his spirit is intact. He wakes up happy and ready to help you get your day off to a positive start. His tail never stops wagging. He smiles in his sleep. He’s simply delighted with life.
He’s small to average size, about 68 lbs. He is compact and muscular.
Elliot enjoys toys, chasing squirrels, and playing with his packmates. He’s gentle and appropriate with my small dog. He’s super-excited when meals are served and cleans his bowl every time.
He sleeps in open crates and ex-pens. He crates easily for meals. Elliot does not seem to be interested in getting on furniture and does not try to.
Elliot is usually the first hound to greet me in the morning. He is affectionate and checks in during my workday to receive lots of pets and hugs. Elliot uses the dog door like a champ. Elliot is naturally friendly and enjoys meeting new people. However, he prefers low key dogs and does not appreciate an aggressive dog getting in his face.
Elliot is a vocalist. He barks in the yard and leads the pack in group howls in the afternoon. Just because.
He has not forgotten his time of deprivation. He is aware of every scrap of food in his environment and will try to help himself to anything on your plate. I would not describe him as food aggressive, but he levels a laser-sharp stare at the food and dashes in to get it if he has an opportunity. We are working on this.
He walks well on a leash, preferring to stay close and watchful. He’s frightened of passing cars and trucks – reasonable considering he spent some time dodging dump trucks and loaders in the landfill.
Elliot is looking for a home with other dogs and a yard to play in. He would probably enjoy older children who have plenty of dog experience. He can be vocal, so he’s not a good fit for an apartment. He needs a quiet neighborhood where he can feel safe outside on walks. A family that works at home would be a huge bonus for this boy.
Elliot is small-dog safe. He has not been cat tested.

24/06/2023

Luke is a 5 yr old gorgeous, confident and curious Irish lad. He gives you kisses and loves to be near you though he’s content left in a kennel when I’m not home. He also sleeps in the kennel as he thinks it’s a good place to relax and he’ll go there on his own if I’m staying up too late in his opinion.

He gets along with other large and medium dogs but is not really interested in them too much, that’s why I think he’d do well as an only dog in a house. He’s definitely not ok with small dogs as he doesn’t seem to separate little dogs from squirrels, anything that is small and moves is prey for him. He also knows how to use his voice, mostly it’s against the critters that are invading his front yard.

Luke walks nicely on a leash until he sees a critter, he might sprint out, so you need to have a firm grip on the leash just in case! He loves to play with toys and he does a good job entertaining himself with them, balls are the most precious toys for him, second are the ones that squeak. If you toss him a ball he’ll go get it and then likes to run a few victory laps with it.

His curious nature made him learn the stairs in just one day, also “ringing” the doorbell to go outside is coming along well. He loves going for walks and exploring the neighborhood and also likes to spend time outside, laying in the shade on the grass.

For a greyhound he’s more on the energetic side, even though he likes to sleep a lot during the day. Luke does require playtime, decent walks and a backyard to run around, so an active family in a house would be ideal for him.
