Banding baby bleus!
We band cordon bleu chicks on day of fledge using bag balm to lubricate the area. Watch here as a band is worked onto this little one’s foot. Going very slowly to assure there is no injury. This year we utilized the NFSS’s closed aluminum bands.
Parent raised African waxbills. Here a pair of Cordon Bleus feed their young. Let us know the content you want to see, and support them with stars! #finch #birds #petbirds #petbirdsofinstagram #finches #conservation #waxbills #finchesofinstagram #guardianofthebleus #keepcbsintheusa

A glympse into the world of these tiny baby bicheno finches (double barred, owl finch) hatching out in the CF project space. Let’s hope mom and dad let them stick around, and keep them fed.
These new parents are still learning and sadly lost their previous couple chicks, but it looks like these two little ones are off to a great start! ❤️

🐦❤️🐦 This season is ending. “Clarence and Alabama” ….also learning parent rearing, and are our latest blue crew nesters this season (with chicks still in nest) I wanted to get a couple live streams of good footage while we have the chance….Unfortunately we are headed down south in just a few short days, and all of the rest of the birds in the “Companion Finch” project, have already been put on maintenance. Through all the deep cleaning, and rearranging- These two just insisted on trying one more time last month, and have persisted throughout. 😭 Even though we won’t be here to see the results of this effort, it seems like they are doing great on this second clutch. They seem to know how to feed, and caught on quicker than most. The chicks have moved quickly through stage 1. We think there are two chicks in nest. We will try to get the endoscope in there to get some video before we head out, but we won’t disturb them to do it.
❤️🦋 Alabama is proving to be a diligent mother which is so good to see. We will leave them well prepared with access to live food cultures, and in the hands of an avian and exotics specialist who will visit the project space, and assure they are kept happy. I’m heartbroken it won’t be me here to support them directly and collect the data myself, but…maybe in the hands of another with special experience, and without my presence, they will fledge little blue miracles. If not we will be ready for lucky clutch #3 next season. ❤️

Stage two foods (when 2 week old chicks in the nest)
Q: how do you know when enough of the right foods?
A:Once “satisfied” a feeding parent bird will nap. They make additional decoy/future/nests for this purpose which generally only the hen uses in the day (male at night—-opposite schedule of an “active” nest). More pairs complicate the rotation and they can all manage to schedule everything like this incubating multiple nesting sites on schedule throughout the season. Humans need not try to keep up, just provide, as we generally just complicate the matter. 😂 Let the birds work. ❤️
Baloos turn to feul up- notice male red cheeks. Once they fill up, they throw up everything for the ravenous chicks- so don’t let the parents starve either…if you don’t freshen the seeds they can’t see past the top layer- keep everything fresh, and keep the parents “satisfied” not “hungry”, even a couple times through the night!!! Let the parents nap when it’s not their turn. Provide the food and let them do the Work. Trust the birds. Listen to them .❤️
