06/6/2024—Wayne County, GA— Guardians of Rescue, a NY-based non-profit animal welfare organization, teamed up with Wayne County Animal Management and Sheriff Chuck Mosley on a cruelty case the involving a female “Animal Rescuer” who accepted donations in the form of pledged funds for death row shelter dogs then allegedly killed them upon receipt.

After an exhaustive year long investigation, the “Animal Rescuer” Patty Elizabeth Thomas (aka Byles) was arrested on 8 Aggravated Animal Cruelty (felony) charges and 10 Animal Cruelty (misdemeanor) charges - along with other related felonies.

It is tragic that caring donors, who thought they were helping to save innocent lives were instead enriching a dog killer. As well as being lethal for the "rescued" dogs, this type of fraud undermines faith in the entire recue community and genuine rescuers who are crucial in the mission to rehome lost, abandoned, and otherwise homeless pets.

Guardians of Rescue routinely partners with local law enforcement and other organizations to see these cases through to arrest and prosecution. Guardians works to bring as many animal abusers to justice as donor support permits.

This is an active and ongoing case. More charges are likely to follow, and more information on this case will be made available when released by law enforcement. GOR will share updates on this case as permitted.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐍𝐎 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐀 𝐏𝐔𝐏𝐏𝐘

Like much technology, the internet is a blessing and a curse. For animals needing homes, it is a networking opportunity we never had before. But the ability to present any respectable face they can construct, hiding their true identities and agendas, also helps criminals to deceive trusting people.

One tragic result is the online puppy "stores" which have websites that make them appear legitimate, when they are actually heartless and greedy backyard breeders pumping out dogs with no concern for the wellbeing, health or happiness of their baby-making dog mom victims or the innocent puppies they produce, litter after litter. They are really small-scale puppy mills used to make a living off the suffering of the breeding moms and the frequent suffering of the often-sickly pups. They lie about the puppies' heritage, describe a well-run operation, often arranging a meet somewhere else to make the exchange of money and puppy so that the customer never sees what they really are—just animal exploiters on a run-down, dirty property with a fancy website. Worn-out breeding moms and unsold puppies are often dumped in shelters or on the street.

As is the case with brick and mortar pet stores selling puppy mill puppies, these breeders sell puppies for high prices, while the family who takes the dog home falls in love with the adorable baby, then watches in horror as the puppy sickens, and thousands of dollars are spent at the vets to save the baby—if they are so lucky. Often, they are not, and suffer the trauma of losing a puppy who had quickly become art of the family.

Guardians has investigated and brought down these operations, and often has one or more of these cases in the pipeline. We often learn of these crimes when victimized people turn to us for justice for themselves and their suffering pet. Without these alerts from victims of shady internet "breeders", they often go unpunished, and more animals and people suffer.

We can't help any of these people and dogs without the financial support of many caring people, and the victimized people who call us with information about their ordeals, which helps us make our case against the abusers.

Adopt, don't shop, and never assume that a webpage offering lives for sale is telling you the whole truth.

***ARRESTED***
Wayne County, Georgia

One of several long-term cruelty cases in rural Georgia has culminated in 8 Aggravated Animal Cruelty (felony) charges and 10 Animal Cruelty (misdemeanor) charges. The “Animal Rescuer” Patty Elizabeth Thomas (aka Byles) is behind bars today after an exhaustive investigation.

Guardians of Rescue is so thankful for the hard work and tremendous efforts put into this case by Wayne County Animal Management’s dedicated staff and Sheriff Chuck Mosley. The amount of support from surrounding counties (Long County and Tattnall County) was integral to the success of this case as well. Partnering with local law enforcement and other organizations to see these cases through to arrest and prosecution is the only effective way to stop the abuse. Accountability is a necessity!

This is an active and ongoing case. More charges are likely to follow. Since this involves a “rescuer,” rumors are sure to be spread through the rescue community. Many have been affected by this case and all parties want to see justice served. Any entity actually involved in this case will protect the integrity of the evidence at all costs, which means information on this case will not be made available until released by law enforcement. 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗗𝗢𝗠 𝗔𝗙𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗔 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘 𝗢𝗡 𝗔 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗜𝗡

This week we remember Bear. For 15 years this gentle boy spent his entire existence chained outside. It is a lonely and frustrating world for dogs who live restricted to a few feet of movement - exposed to the bone chilling freezing nights of winter and brutal scorching summers unable to find any real relief from the harsh weather.

When Guardians of Rescue secured his release into our care, we cut Bear's chain - giving him his freedom back and symbolic of the certainty he would never return to that kind of life. He touched hearts around the world and made a friend in Ricky Gervais who refused to leave the set of Good Morning America until Bear - who he met on set - found a home. It worked!

Bear went on to have a wonderful life with his new guardian, Kerrie, who gave him a safe comfortable home and the world of love he deserved. This week marks the anniversary of Bear's passing, and although we couldn't change the years he suffered, together, with your help, we changed how his story ended. That's what we hope for all animals in need, and we can only take action for them thanks to your compassionate support.

𝐎𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲

Three years after the Civil War ended, the head of an organization of Union Veterans established what was then called Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.

It is understood that this time of year was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. Unofficially, what we now call Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer season.

One way in which Guardians shows our appreciation to those who sacrifice for us is to reunite veterans with pets they have rescued while on deployment overseas. The thought of leaving their animal companions behind is...unthinkable—but it is a difficult and complicated process to get them safely to the US. But with the help of our supporters, we have preserved these bonds for numerous soldiers and their animal best friends.

Wayne County, Georgia

This sweet girl made Facebook headlines when a Good Samaritan called in an animal welfare complaint to animal management for the county and then made a Facebook post for help from local citizens.

There are five dogs total from this case that will need rescue commitments once cleared for placement. This is an active case, so detailed information cannot be released. However, all dogs are off property and safe at animal control.

We are thankful for the private citizen who took action when she saw suffering. We are thankful for the swift actions of Wayne County Animal Management and Wayne County Sheriff’s officers. We are thankful that the owners are facing charges.

Deployed overseas, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Kevin and his squad found Bear as a tiny puppy during a night raid. They never expected to find an emaciated terrified pup cowering inside when they surrounded a building in a hostile area, but he instantly melted their hearts and they knew they couldn't leave him behind - he wouldn't make it alone.

Sergeant Kevin and Bear became inseparable in a cold and dangerous world, and faced with the heartbreaking reality of being forced to leave him behind when he returns Stateside, our hero - who has served our country for a decade and has never asked for anything, until now, is pleading for help to save vulnerable Bear's life through out "No Buddy Left Behind" program.

Efforts to rescue Bear from overseas and give him a safe happy future with Sergeant Kevin are underway, but to get him safely to America where he can be reunited with his hero Dad, we need your help.

Motherhood is a gift, and we're sending our very best wishes to everyone celebrating great Moms and people filling those shoes, to the moms of fur babies and foster babies, and honoring those we miss.

We also want to thank you. Guardians is passionate about ending the suffering of animal mothers, and we're working to strengthen animal protection laws, along with closing down cruel puppy mills which exploit lives and motherhood for greed.

The Colbert County woman charged with more than a dozen animal abuse crimes had her charges upgraded by a grand jury Monday.

Debra Catledge was indicted on several felony and misdemeanor charges related to a long-term investigation involving dogs and horses on her property. This happened as she was waiting for her bench trial on misdemeanor animal abuse charges to begin.

Following an investigation, the district attorney’s office was able to secure felony indictments. The indictments were based on the varying health conditions of multiple animals that were found on her property.

Colbert County Animal Control Director Corey Speegle said this case is one of the worst he has ever seen."

Catledge is in jail on a 80,000 dollar bond. Her court date has been set for June 20.

Guardian KB responded to the request for help from Guardians with this big case after Colbert County couldn’t find room for all the dogs last October. She described the dogs' conditions—

KB said many dogs had infections, parasites and heartworms when they arrived.

“They had live bugs crawling on them,...there were some dead cockroaches in their ear debris, and really bad yeast infections."

One of the dog's fur had extreme matting that caused her leg to stick to the side of her body, restricting her movement.

KB said “She was three times her actual size with all that hair imprisoning her."

COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WAFF) - The trial of a woman charged with animal cruelty in Colbert County will begin Monday morning.
Debra Jane Catledge, of Barton, was charged with animal cruelty in late September after 28 dead horses were found on her property in various states of decomposition.
Eighteen horses were confiscated from her and are currently being cared for by Colbert Animal Services.
Forty-six dogs were also taken from her property in September, police say several of them were malnourished.
The trial will start Monday at 9 a.m.

This past week we told you that Guardians received a call from a woman who lives in rural Kentucky, near a trailer park that backs up to her home, right on the wood line.

Over the past weekend, while her husband was mowing the wood line, he came across two of their cats, who had been had been killed by either buckshot or with BB guns. They also witnessed two of the young teenaged boys across the wood line shooting BB guns.

We are working with law enforcement, who are questioning the teens involved in this horrific incident, and they will be charged accordingly. We will have more updates on that soon.

We know there are two more cats out there, and we are working hard to trap them. Although we set traps every day last week, monitored by volunteers, we have had no luck yet. We believe this is due to someone in the trailer park feeding these cats and the cats also having access to the garbage cans. On Thursday one trap was empty, so somebody got in there, ate the food without tripping the trap, and got away with a full belly!

We will not give up until we are satisfied we have all the surviving cats in our hands.

Today, we're here to tell you about Guardians' newest case.

Guardians received a call from a woman who lives in rural Kentucky, near a trailer park that backs up to her home, right on the wood line. This woman has three cats who are inside/outside cats, and she was also caring for four strays who had wandered onto her property.

Over the past weekend, while her husband was mowing the wood line, he came across two of the cats—sadly, they were dead. Upon further examination, it was found that these cats had been shot by either buckshot or with BB guns. They also found an empty BB container, and even witnessed two of the young teenaged boys across the wood line shooting BB guns.

Right now, Guardians is working with law enforcement on this investigation. The Guardians team has set humane cat traps, successfully trapping one survivor so far, and is making multiple trips daily to set traps and leave clean water until we catch the last two remaining cats.

Here are some photos of the one cat currently in Guardians' care. We will have more once these traps do their job. We will keep you updated once there is more information.

Buster is one of 14 dogs who was used, abused, neglected and then abandoned by a backyard breeder in Robertson County, KY. Trapped in filth, dangerous levels of ammonia, and shivering in the freezing cold, his coat was painfully matted and damp with urine and f***s, and poor Buster spent his life without even the most basic level of care, let alone someone who loved him.

Like the others, Buster had a severe upper respiratory infection, open wounds, an eye infection, internal parasites and low body score, because the person responsible for their pain was only interested in how much money they could make out of the dogs.

Thanks to your support for Guardians of Rescue, Buster and his friends will never suffer again. Today he is unrecognizable - happy, healthy, and loved.

A legal investigation is ongoing. Our team is working every day to end this profit-driven cruelty; to seek justice for the victims of greedy heartless humans, and make sure innocent animals can know the life of love and safety that should always have been theirs.

Pearl is a survivor. Despite being more than 10 years old, a heartless puppy mill owner wanted to exploit her frail body one more time to get a few final dollars out of her, and it almost cost her life. Little Pearl, wouldn't be alive today without your support for Guardians of Rescue's vital mission.

She spent her entire life hidden away - trapped in a filthy puppy mill in Holmes County, Ohio, with 19 other neglected souls being forced to breed for profit and when she was rescued along with the other suffering dogs, it was a race against time to save her.

With a body score of just 1, she was living in f***s - malnourished, in pain, dehydrated, heavily pregnant and suffering from a life-threatening infection. This poor girl was terrified. The emergency C-Section to save her life also saved 5 of her 7 tiny puppies.

Pearl is recovering well from her surgery and she is gaining weight and getting stronger. We are so proud of her. As she is starting to feel better and become less fearful, she has been spending more time outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine, and it's doing her the world of good. She didn't ever see the sun trapped in the hellish life before. She's free from that suffering now, because you care about innocent animals like Pearl.

Today's Solar Eclipse will be visible in several areas of the country and although it is a natural part of life on Earth, and a memorable moment for those who are able to safely watch, many people are worried about pets during this time. Very little research has been carried out on the effects of a solar eclipse on animals, but most handle the experience without any worries at all. However, all animals are individuals and just like us, it may affect some in different ways.

Some animals may become restless, dogs may bark or howl, and animals also pick up on our worries and become anxious. If you have concerns about animals in your care, there are a few simple ways to help them through this short period.

⚫ Bring pets inside.
⚫ Keep routines as normal.
⚫ Leave the TV/radio on and other regular household sounds.
⚫ Offer reassurance if that helps them relax.
⚫ If your pet is especially sensitive, closing blinds and curtains and putting the light on may be a comfort to them.

Remember your own safety too and protect your eyes if you are watching!

𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗢, 𝗗𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗬! 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗔𝗧 𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗡𝗢𝗪!

A backyard breeder in Robertson County, KY, used Dolly to breed puppies and didn't care enough about her to give her even the most basic standard of care. Left in a small freezing building, her horrendously matted coat was damp and filthy with her own urine and f***s that covered the floor and every surface - she had no option but to sit and sleep in the mess; breathing in dangerously high levels of ammonia that made her eyes burn. Even worse, she wasn't alone. 13 other suffering souls were trapped there with her.

With severe upper respiratory infections, open wounds, eye infections, internal parasites and low rapidly-dropping body scores, these dogs wouldn't have survived much longer and their abuser didn't care. To them, the dogs were only valued as dollar signs.... but not to us, and not to you.

Thanks to your support for Guardians of Rescue, Dolly is unrecognizable and the photos speak for themselves. A legal investigation is ongoing. Every day our team works to end this profit-driven cruelty; to seek justice for the victims of greedy heartless humans, and make sure innocent animals can know the life of love and safety that should always have been theirs.

𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱: Niki, a little warrior dog who was rescued near death from severe neglect along with 20 other dogs who were sick and freezing after being abandoned. They were left to fend alone in a house without food, water, or heat - it was so cold even the toilet bowl had frozen. Thanks to your support for Guardians of Rescue, the dogs were removed from the property and received emergency and ongoing veterinary care to save their lives. Niki had the greatest fight of all, and thankfully - with you support behind her - she healed enough to go on to the life she could once only have dreamed about, in a home filled with love.

We thought you might like another look at Emlyn's kittens, 'cause...KITTENS.

Emlyn was saved by a caring person from the freezing Winter, Guardians took her in, and then Emlyn surprised everybody when we learned she was carrying passengers!

Emlyn and these innocent babies might not have survived but for the intervention of someone who could not turn her back on a freezing cat. We can all be a part of Guardians' mission to change for the better the lives of animals in urgent need.

Three years ago, Guardians of Rescue brought over 300 sick and neglected dogs out of a living hell in Adair County, Kentucky. Trapped their whole lives in an illegal puppy mill where they were forced to breed for profit, the dogs endured a heartbreaking struggle just to stay alive. Sadly, many perished before rescue.

The lead in this case was a tiny Yorkie named Baby - dumped at a groomer in such horrendous condition it was hard to recognize she was even a dog. Investigating what happened to her led to a private residence where the true horror of the suffering was overwhelming.

Desperate eyes peered out from under matted coats through the bars of filthy cages; ammonia burned the dogs' skin and every breath while they were forced to eat, sleep, and spend their entire existence in their own f***s. No one had been in to clean the pens and cages for so long the hinges on the doors were rusted shut. Deceased dogs were found scattered in the grounds of the property - no thought to giving them the dignity of being buried even after they gave their bodies and their lives to a twisted business. The heartless individual responsible for causing the dogs to suffer was Debra Remmers, who was charged with 144 counts of Animal Cruelty.

Many hundreds of dogs have been rescued by our team - enabled by your support - from similar cruelty since, and the anniversary of this case is a reminder that we must all remain vigilant to catch the people who harm animals in this way. If you see something that concerns you, please, reach out to your local law enforcement and animal control agency because these evil people won't stop until we make them stop.

Right now, Guardians has several puppy mills under investigation and we are working alongside law enforcement to put and end to their sick operations. It is only through your compassionate support we are able to take action against them and to keep moving forward for the innocent souls who suffer at the hands of greedy humans.
