A 1 month old drinking water from a hibiscus flower. Spraying the hatchlings daily is important for proper hydration. More so than soaking imo.

All of our tortoises got their mid summer check up. Take weights and check for any issues. Each picture is a different tortoise. We rarely handle our tortoises so it was a bit if work for me and Oliver to catch them all. Everyone checked out ok and had positive or stable weight gain.

Another hatchling! This is the 5th of the season and first from our female big betty. She's our largest female in the 1400 gram range. I will be holding this one back to raise up.
Also got going on the hatchling pens. Each section is 2x4ft and the overall size is 8x4. It is seeded with tortoisesupply.com testudo mix and clovers. Few more things to finish up before any torts can be added.

Evolution of the russian tortoise pen. This started as a covid project. My wife's friend had a tortoise that needed a new home and knew we had some other reptiles. So we got him on a Friday and Saturday morning I built the pen with the lid. It is also lined on the bottom with chicken wire. Being that I have some past years experience breeding other reptiles I thought heck why not get a female for the male. So I tracked down a female, and then another and then built more pens, and got more tortoises. Here we are just about a year later and I have 2 males and 6 females and a large wooden box in my yard.
The first female i picked up ended up laying 3 eggs last year with only being here and with a male for about 3 weeks. One baby hatched out but sadly I lost it to a rat 2 weeks after hatching. My dumb mistake.
A big goal of mine is to grow enough food for all the tortoises to eat. I had a bad run in with a pocket gopher and lost quite a few plants I had established over winter. But hes not a threat anymore and I just recently seeded quite a few areas of my property with seeds from tortoisesuppy.com. if you look at the last picture of the pen you can see that the tortoises have DEATROYED everything that I had grown over winter.

Oliver hand feeding two of our female Russian tortoises today. We gave a few blueberrys as a treat along with some dandelion flowers from the yard. Lots of breeding activity already with multiple females. Last video you can see our smaller male head bobbing at a female.
