There are various reasons why walks with your dog can be shorter. Regardless of this, our dogs need a certain amount of exercise in order to maintain their musculature and joint mobility. If your dog does not move enough, it can lead to joint problems within a very short time. 🦴

That's why today we present you 3 varied ways to keep your dog moving at home. 😋

Encircling objects
Encircling promotes the uniform load on both sides of the body and the agility of your dog. Only in case of instability of the spine caution is required here.

All Four
With this exercise you train your dogs body tension and balance. Start with a large, flat target, such as a foot mat, on which your dog can stand comfortably. Reward him when he's on target with all fours. Then you can always use smaller and higher targets.

Obstacle Course
The aim is to promote your dog's proprioception and balance. Use different and constantly changing materials, such as books, balance cushions, broomstick or cushions.

Pretty best friends: The intestine and the immune system are two important allies in the fight against pathogens. Therefore, we should keep an eye on the intestinal health of our dogs if we want to strengthen their immune system. 👀

How the intestine and the immune system influence each other will be explained in our post! 🤓

The intestine is home to countless bacteria whose job it is to ward off pathogens. A balanced intestinal flora makes it difficult for parasites and single-celled organisms to settle and multiply.

If the digestive organ is weakened, it has a negative effect on the immune system. The reverse is the case: Immune deficiency often also leads to digestive problems such as diarrhoea, constipation and can promote intestinal inflammation.

Did you know the connection between the immune system and the intestine? 🧐

It was vital for our dogs ancestors to avoid showing pain or weakness, as it could have cost them their position in the pack. 🐺 This fact makes it more difficult for us today to detect diseases in time. Therefore, it is very important to know typical symptoms in order to be aware of changes at an early stage and to be able to take action.

In this post we therefore introduce you to the most common symptoms of diseases of dogs. 🤓

Dogs are masters of hiding
A wounded animal is weak and in danger of being excluded from the pack. That's why dogs don't show when something hurts them. That's why you should keep a close eye on behavioral changes.

Common Symptoms of Diseases
Increased drinking, Excessive hiccups, loss of appetite, restlessness, increased licking or scratching, howling, stiffness, lethargy, trembling

In general, if you are unsure whether your dog is in pain, you should go straight to the vet. Likewise, you should never administer medication to your dog on your own.

Fresh Smile. . .
1) Prevents tartar and bad breath
The contained sodium salt can counteract the formation of tartar. It binds the calcium contained in saliva, inhibits the growth of further calcium crystals and keeps plaque soft for longer, so that it can be better removed when chewing.

2) Supports teeth and gums
Eggshell powder is a calcium supplier and promotes strong, healthy teeth. At the same time, ginger and rosemary counteract unspecific inflammation and protect the gums.

3) Strengthens the immune system
Our combination of pro- and prebiotics has a generally positive effect on the immune system of the dog. In addition, linseed oil has a high proportion of omega-3 fatty acids and thus beneficial effects on the metabolism.

Good and regular dental care is of great importance not only for us humans! 🦷🪥 Also with our dogs we should pay attention to good oral hygiene. Otherwise plaque and tartar quickly make their mischief. 😕

Find out more about this in our post! 🤓⬆

Dental care in the past
Before our four-legged pets were domesticated, dental care took place quite naturally. Pieces of meat from prey were relatively tough and had to be chewed for a corresponding length of time. In addition, bones with their hard structure ensured proper abrasion of food remains.

Dental care today
Nowadays, dog food that is quickly swallowed without long chewing is common. Especially wet food is pretty much the opposite of what the dog ancestors got between their teeth. When eaten jerk, there is hardly any abrasion when eating. The consequence: plaque.

Plaque vs. Tartar
1) Plaque
- white, barely visible layer on the teeth
- consists of food remains, saliva and germs
- right next to the gums

2) Tartar
- brownish, rough discoloration on the teeth
- solid deposits of the non-removed plaque
- not easily removed

Unfortunately, our theme week “winter with a dog” is coming to an end. That’s why we want to share 3 tips for the cold season with you today! 🌨

#1 Coat care
Dogs with longer coats especially need more intensive coat care. After a walk, make sure there are no ice chunks left in the coat and that the hair is not matted.

#2 Paw care
Snow, road salt or grit in particular often accumulate in the spaces between paw pads and cause chafing that can become infected. Check and clean your four-legged friend's paws regularly.

#3 Snow gastritis
Contaminants such as dirt, antifreeze, road salt and grit in the snow can attack the stomach and mucous membranes, causing snow gastritis. So make sure your dog doesn't eat snow.

Can you think of any other advice on the subject? Feel free to share it with us under this post! 🤗

Not only in the fresh air lurk cold risks in winter. ☃️ Even after a walk, your four-legged friend can still catch a cold in his basket! 🤧

Find out how you can avoid this in our post! ⚠️

After the walk
After the walk, the ideal place for your dog is in a draft-free, warm and dry place.

On wet days
If your dog is damp and wet, you should change the blanket in his basket a while after the walk and hang it up to dry. This way you avoid that your dog gets cold.

Preventing colds
Dogs can catch a cold, tonsillitis and they are not immune to cystitis. However, you can prevent this with a dry and warm place.

Do you make sure that your four-legged friend's basket is always warm and dry?

The cold season is also known as the season of colds. 🤧 This is true not only for us humans, but also for our four-legged friends. 🐶 That's why it's especially important to support your dog's immune system in winter.

Antioxidants
Antioxidants are ideal for strengthening immune cells. Canola oil, as well as cooked carrots and zucchini can thus help strengthen the immune system.

Probiotics
70% of the body's cells involved in protecting the immune system are located in the intestinal tract. Probiotics are part of the natural microflora of the intestine. They stimulate and strengthen the immune system of your dog and likewise protect against diarrhea.

Omega fatty acids
Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids help strengthen the immune system. It is best to use vegetable oils for this purpose, such as rapeseed or soybean oil.

How do you strengthen your dog's immune system? 🤔

On particularly cold winter days, it is worthwhile to playfully engage with your four-legged friend at home. 🐶 This is not only important for the mental workload of your four-legged friend, but also strengthens your relationship at the same time! 💖
That's why we share three different games with you for more fun on winter days! 🌨

#1 Hide treats in a room
Send your dog to his place and hide treats in another room. Afterwards, let your dog search for the treats on command.

#2 Treat Towel
Grab an old towel and put it in front of you. Now spread the treats on the towel and fold it once in the middle and then tie it together. Now the fun can begin!

#3 Cup Game
Take three cups and hide a treat under one of the jars. Now let your dog look for the treat and repeat the game.

What other game ideas do you know? 🤔

When it gets cold, the body has to expend more energy to keep warm! This is not only the case with us humans, but also with our four-legged friends. 🐶 Whether it makes sense to increase the amount of food in cold temperatures, you will learn in this article!

Of course, it's important to consider how thick and long your four-legged friend's coat is, how agile he is and how often he spends time in the cold.

Keep an eye on your pet's weight - that way you can avoid overweight or underweight. If you're not sure, the best thing to do is to consult a veterinarian if you have any questions.

Unfortunately, our four-legged friends can also suffer from hypothermia. Particularly susceptible to this are small or short-haired dogs. Make sure your dog doesn't go swimming in the winter, doesn't have to wait outside for too long (in front of the supermarket for example), and keeps moving to prevent hypothermia. ❄

Signs of hypothermia
- incessant shivering
- ice-cold ears, tail and paws
- shallow breathing
- weak pulse
- lethargy

First aid measures in case of hypothermia
- rub your dog with a towel
- cover him well
- offer hot water bottle wrapped in towel
- offer lukewarm water

Do not apply a hair dryer or anything like that, try to stay calm and warm up your dog slowly. Even if your dog's condition has improved after applying the measures, you should have him checked again by the veterinarian.

Has your dog ever suffered from hypothermia?

Sled dogs are among the most powerful and hard-working animals in the world. 🛷
Learn more about the history of the sled dog sport and the distances sled dogs can travel in this post! 🐾

History
The invention of the dog sled dates back to the Inuit ethnic group. Among the Inuit, and later in the polar regions in the 19th century, dog sleds were a particularly useful means of transportation.
The benefits of sled transportation were discovered during the Alaskan gold rush. It was not long before the first competitions for speed and endurance of the dog teams emerged.

Long distance
The first races covered a total distance of about 650 km. But also longer races were not unusual in the following. Every year in Alaska there is a dog sled race over 1860 km.

Did you think these dogs could cover such a long distance?

The cold weather can take a toll on your pet's paws! Get tips for proper paw care in winter in this post. 🐾

Checking Paws
If you notice ice clumps forming under the paws of your dog during your walk, it is important to remove them directly if possible. Warm the ice with your hands and then carefully remove them.

Grooming Products
Paw balm can help heal cracks and protect against outside elements.

Adjust the length of walks
Take several short walks rather than a few long ones. This way you give the dog's paws time to regenerate and they also are not exposed to the cold for too long.

Do you care for your dog's paws more in winter?

21/12/2022

Wishing for a dog, cat or other animal is more than understandable - giving an animal as a Christmas gift is not always a good idea.
Animals are not things, like a sweater or a toy, that should be given away lightly. They are living creatures with inherent needs that require our care for as long as they live. Therefore, the acquisition should be sufficiently considered in advance!

Every year, thousands of animals are given as christmas gifts. However, the acquisition of a pet should never be taken lightly.

The problem
The responsibility of owning an animal is often underestimated, which is why already overcrowded animal shelters have to accommodate thousands of new arrivals after the holidays.

Animal love can be shown in other ways!
Many animal shelters and animal welfare organizations are happy to receive donations in kind and money. Sometimes they also offer animal sponsorships! You just have to ask at your local animal shelter.

Of course, our dogs also want to go outside in winter - some more, others less! 🐾 In this post we tell you how you can make the winter walks more pleasant for your four-legged friend. 🥰

Adjust the length of walks
Many dogs do not mind the cold and snow. Especially with smaller breeds you should adjust the length of your walk to the temperature.

Choose your walk carefully
At best, make sure the paths of the route are not gritted. This will protect your dog's paws.

Keep moving
Make sure your dog keeps moving and stops very rarely. This will reduce the risk of him starting to freeze.

Of course, we hope that no dog owner has to witness a poisoning of his pet! However, in case of emergency, you should try to stay calm, get help from the people around you and in any case consult a vet as soon as possible. In this post, there are some more tips that you should follow in case of an intoxication of your dog.

If there is a suspicion of poisoning, see a vet as soon as possible in any case! If possible, carefully take a sample of the poison or vomit of your dog with you, to be examined what it is.

Also make sure your dogs airways are clear and do not make your dog vomit by himself! He could be injured in the process.

Activated charcoal.....causes the poison to bind in the digestive tract. If your dog has recently ingested the poison, you can give him about 1 gram of activated charcoal per kilogram of body weight.

Did you already know about these measures? 🤔

Unfortunately, we cannot influence the people who put out poison bait - but our four-legged friends! Therefore, teach your dog as early as possible not to eat from the ground.

Dogs also have the "oral phase" where they take everything in their mouths. Therefore, you should start anti-poison bait training as early as possible.

The training
Walk together with your dog closer and closer to the food placed on the ground. Practice this until you are standing directly in front of the food, your dog is looking at it, but not eating it.

The food on the floor becomes a signal for your dog to stop. Reward your dog properly when he understands and repeat the training continuously.

Have you already done anti-poison bait training with your dog? 🐶

The most dangerous poison baits for your dog! 😱 Mostly poison or pointed objects are hidden in pieces of sausage or treats to make it as difficult as possible for the four-legged friends to resist.

In this post you will learn about the most dangerous poison baits for your dog. In the coming days, we'll also tell you how you can tell that your dog has been poisoned and how you can best protect him from it! 🛡

Rat Poison
Rat poison is usually used to control pests. It can cause your dog's blood to clot. If consumed, there is a risk of internal bleeding.

Slug pellet
Slug pellet powder has a sweet taste that can be attractive to your dog. It can cause severe heart palpitations, restlessness and muscle tremors in your dog.

Razor blades, nails or thumbtacks
If your dog puts one of these items in his mouth and is already injured in the mouth area, with luck he will spit it back out. If your dog swallows something sharp, do not make him vomit. There is a risk of life-threatening injuries.

As soon as you suspect that your dog has eaten a poisoned bait, you should consult a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Do you know of any other poison baits? Warn other dog owners about it in the comments. ⬇️

Dogs also need enough sleep! 💤

If your dog doesn't sleep enough, it can have many negative consequences for him. But why is getting enough sleep so important for your dog?

Just like us humans, dogs need their sleep to function properly. A lack of sleep can have all kinds of effects on your dog. 😴

Possible symptoms of sleep deprivation are:
- Ability to concentrate and learn decreases
- Increased risk of illness
- Nervousness
- Irritability
- Aggressiveness
- Tendency to depressive behavior

Have you ever experienced effects of lack of sleep in your dog? 🤔

How can you actually tell if your dog is in a deep sleep or just dozing? 🤔

Not always when your dog has his eyes closed, he is also in a deep and real sleep. Often he is merely dozing off. Then he reacts more to his environment and is more easily disturbed.

How do you tell the difference between dozing and sleeping in your dog?

When your dog dozes, he responds to the smallest sounds. He blinks, wiggles his ears or sniffs. As soon as he hears the bag of treats rustling, he jumps up and is wide awake.

If your dog starts breathing calmly or shows signs of dreaming, you can assume that he is in a deep sleep. He is less susceptible to noise and disturbance.

Processing experiences in dreams
We can not exactly tell what dogs are dreaming. However, scientists assume that our four-legged friends process experiences during their dreams just as we do.

Central role in the dream
According to a Harvard University study, the owner plays a central role in the dream for his dog.

Other possible components of the dreams
1. Eating
2. Toys
3. Dog friends

Even in their sleep dogs can tell us a lot! In this post you will learn what the sleeping position of your dog can indicates. 😴

What your dog’s sleeping position can say about his well-being!

On the side
As the belly is uncovered, it shows us that the dog feels safe and he has no need to guard his belly.

Tightly rolled up
The paws and the tail are close to the body – the dog potentially feels unsafe, or he tries to gather warmth.

On the back and stretched out
Here, the belly is completely unprotected, which indicates deep trust. Also dogs can cool down more easily in this position.

In which position does your dog sleep most often? 🤔

How much do the ancestors of our four-legged friends rest? 🐺

You can find out more about this topic in this post!

Who sleeps more?
Wolves rest about 30% of the time after spending hours hunting prey. On the contrary, dogs spend at least 50% of the day resting.

The importance of food
While our four-legged friends get their meal served daily, their ancestors need to become active. The length and number of rest periods in wolves depends on the amount of their food. When there is plenty of food, wolves rest more because they can afford it. On the other hand, if there is too little food, they rest longer because they have to because of their energy deficit.

Would you have thought that our four-legged friends rest about 20% more than their ancestors? 🤔
