Unfortunately, our theme week “winter with a dog” is coming to an end. That’s why we want to share 3 tips for the cold season with you today! 🌨

#1 Coat care
Dogs with longer coats especially need more intensive coat care. After a walk, make sure there are no ice chunks left in the coat and that the hair is not matted.

#2 Paw care
Snow, road salt or grit in particular often accumulate in the spaces between paw pads and cause chafing that can become infected. Check and clean your four-legged friend's paws regularly.

#3 Snow gastritis
Contaminants such as dirt, antifreeze, road salt and grit in the snow can attack the stomach and mucous membranes, causing snow gastritis. So make sure your dog doesn't eat snow.

Do not apply a hair dryer or anything like that, try to stay calm and warm up your dog slowly. Even if your dog's condition has improved after applying the measures, you should have him checked again by the veterinarian.

However, in case of emergency, you should try to stay calm, get help from the people around you and in any case consult a vet as soon as possible. If there is a suspicion of poisoning, see a vet as soon as possible in any case! If possible, carefully take a sample of the poison or vomit of your dog with you, to be examined what it is.

Garlic and onions.....contain sulfur compounds that destroy your dog's red blood cells.

Chocolate and cocoa.....contain theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and can lead to overstimulation of the nervous system and heart palpitations, eventually even death.

Grapes and raisins.....can lead to fatal kidney failure due to the oxalic acid they contain.

Raw pork…..may contain the Aujeszky-virus, which can cause pseudoradiosis, a fatal disease of the nervous system, in dogs.

Nightshade plants.....contain solanine, which is toxic to dogs. Solanine poisoning is characterized by diarrhea, vomiting, convulsions, and respiratory paralysis. Solanaceous plants include tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplants, and gooseberries, for example.

While our four-legged friends get their meal served daily, their ancestors need to become active. The length and number of rest periods in wolves depends on the amount of their food. When there is plenty of food, wolves rest more because they can afford it. On the other hand, if there is too little food, they rest longer because they have to because of their energy deficit.
