Hey that’s us ! 🙂 What a beautiful week we have been having.

Natasha Thompson captured this photo of a double rainbow Monday at her farm, "The Byrd Farm," just outside of Centralia. This was one of several great photos submitted in the past day. We'll share more soon. To submit a photo for potential publication, send it to [email protected].

Who doesn’t love a good before & after? 🙂 This is where we keep our kids 4H Dairy heifers now. Eventually we would like to get a horse on the farm and use this barn as their stall. There’s a little paddock behind there that they can go in, and across the gravel there is the big pastures.

Summer is at an end & autumn is among us. Time for canning our harvests, drying herbs, and fires with the wood stove (which is our primary source of heat in the winter months). Mornings before the stove is started are really chilly, especially because we have so many windows. We don’t mind though because once the stove is going it is so cozy! We had a cord of wood delivered and then later that night the power went out. Perfect timing though because we had wood to keep us warm. The little girls fell asleep, and the big girls played board games all night. It was a good day, and an even better girls night. Even Mrs Kitty participated. Also, check out those amazing tomatoes our awesome neighbors brought us! They are so delicious. Really loving them on these open face sandwiches I made. I put an olive oil + balsamic vinegarette mix on the bread, then spreadable Brie cheese, salt, pepper & the tomato’s.

Late post, but we got over a foot of snow last week. Unfortunately it was too much for the old barn down our driveway to carry & it caved in. It’s a bummer because I thought the old barn was pretty beautiful to look at, despite it slowly falling down. It was a small little milking barn that our neighbors dad used to milk his cows in when they had livestock many years ago. There are still a couple of old metal milk jugs in there somewhere that I noticed while picking blackberries.

Our turkeys are laying eggs finally! Unfortunately none of them are broody are the moment. I would love to hatch a clutch of turkey eggs at some point, but until one of the hens decides to go broody, we will be adding the eggs to the cartons we sell. Also, keep an eye out for our new cartons ! We ordered some really cute ones.

Just a little sneak peek into our library restoration. So excited about how it’s coming along. We have a lot of work to do still. We put in built in floor to ceiling book shelves, and we will be doing some pretty beautiful moulding as well.

I really love how the paint color makes the original brass chandelier pop. It’s hard to tell in this photo though. Any suggestions for what sort of bulbs would look nice in this fixture?

Hey there! Anyone missing a Siamese kitty? We found her in the chicken coop stuck in a trash can earlier. She’s fine. We fed her and she let us love on her a bit. She seemed scared and missing her home though. I think she might have a skin condition because the fur on her tail was missing. Located by Little Hannaford.

Progress pictures on the foyer.

Had to replace the subfloor and a few of the tongue and groove boards on the wall. Removed the 70s style wood wall paneling, added 1/4in drywall, then did all of the wood wainscoting and moulding.

Just need to add outlet covers and we will be done 🙂

Really wanted to keep true to the time period our home was built in as much as possible.

What’s everyone think?

Bonus picture of the beautiful antique ceiling vent. These vents allow the heat from the wood stove downstairs to move upstairs and heat that portion of the house.

Had to make some repairs to the walls and subfloor in the foyer. Found these neat newspaper clippings on the tongue & groove.

I also wrote some of the history of the house on the tongue/groove before we put the 1/4” drywall over it. (Some parts covered for privacy) maybe 70 years from now the next owners will find it and appreciate the history blurb. Also, for anyone wondering, we are doing stained wainscoting over the drywall and going for an antique look.

Washington/ Oregon people being effected by the fires, If you need a place for your pasture animals while evacuating you can always bring them here. Pasture isn’t the best for horses (wire fencing) but we could make it work in a pinch. Works great for cattle. There’s hot wire on the large pasture but we have a few cows out there so whatever you bring would have to be okay with other cattle (steers).

So there is something to be said about preservation and restoration, vs renovation. This giant mature clematis says it all. When I first saw this, it was just a big mess of dead looking vines. The balcony needed to be restored and to be brought up to code. I figured I would just chop the vibes down. Me.Ray informed me that it was actually a clematis and the blooms were beautiful.

So when we restored the balcony, I was extremely careful to preserve this clematis. I wasn’t sure that I was careful enough. As you can see in the winter/fall photo of our house below, it looked dead. To my joy and surprise, it didn’t die. It came back and it’s one of my absolute favorite plants here on the farm.

Preservation takes a lot of patience, it’s not always the easiest option, but in my opinion it is well worth it. To be honest, it wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be to build around the vines.

Scroll through the photos to see the process 🙂

Here are some of the “before” photos from before we bought the farm. Our restoration goal is to keep the farm as close to original as we can, while keeping it functional and well maintained. The character of the farm is what drew us in.

Interesting story about how we found the place. We were house hunting and had found another farm over in Chehalis. I didn’t love it though to be honest. It was a newer build (2007) and lacked the character. I am passionate about old historic homes/buildings and preservation of American history. The deal on the other farm was really stressful. They kept counter offering and denying our offers. It seemed like we were so close to making a deal and closing on the other farm. The deal fell apart one night, and it was pretty late when I got the news. I was up all night from the stress, browsing Zillow and online ads for homes.

Anyway, I came across the Zillow ad for our farm 30 minutes after it was posted. I was so excited. I fell in love right away. I texted our realtor (even though it was like 9pm) and asked her to set up a viewing for as soon as possible. I decided “what the heck, I really want this place” and also sent a message to the listing agent, asking for the soonest possible viewing. We set it up for the following morning at 8am. I drove there and it was even better in person then the ad.

The only complication was that the terms of our loan (VA) were a bit picky. The house needed painted, the deck needed redone, the stairs needed new railing and a few other details that could be dealbreakers due to our type of loan. It truly was a one in a million shot weather they would approve it. The previous owner, Mr.Ray, graciously allowed us to work on the house and make the changes that needed made in order to pass the VA appraisal. He didn’t have to do that and could have easily taken one of the other offers that was made on the home. We will always be so grateful for his patience and kindness. There were several offers in already.

We prayed about it. A lot. And we truly put our heart and soul into making the house pass the appraisal/inspection. It truly was meant to be. I got up every morning and packed the girls into my minivan, and drove up before dawn to work on the house (it was in the middle of summer and very hot).

Our hard work paid off, and the appraiser approved the house. We got our loan and closed. It was one of the happiest days of our life the day we closed (aside from our kids being born and our wedding).

One of our favorite things about this farm is the history and character. We also love that the Byrd family still comes to visit and stays in contact.

Do any of you have a special story about how you got your home? Share below if you do 🙂

The poultry barn is one of my favorite places to be on the farm. I have spent many hours here caring for the birds, restoring & decorating. I even added a little loft play area for the girls. We have been blessed with 5 daughters and they love to hang out up there while we are working, and play with their dolls.

I collect license plates (and other signs) then display them all on the barn. If you ever have any extra license plates and you aren’t sure what to do with them, send them over to us and we will add them to the barn 🙂

Hey everyone ! I created this page so people could follow along on the restoration/farm journey of our farm. We are The Baggett Family, but our farm is affectionately referred to by everyone as The Byrd Farm. The previous owners were the Byrd family and they lived here for many many years. We didn’t feel right changing the name and to be honest, we raise hundreds of birds so it was fitting 🙂 Anyway, feel free to follow us here or over on Instagram to see what we are up to here on the farm.
