Addressing H5N1
We're aware of recent news reports about H5N1 (Avian Flu), being a subject of concern for those who feed raw meat to their pets.
As a family-owned business with pets of our own, it's important to us to directly address what we're doing to ensure your pets safety, so that you can continue to confidently buy your treats from us.
We will be monitoring the H5N1 situation going forward, to make sure that we are following all recommended practices by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service to inactivate the potential virus in our products. Below is some information to help you navigate the situation, but should anything change, we will post further updates.
How Do Animals Get H5N1?
The H5N1 virus primarily affects birds and has been found in raw poultry during outbreaks since the early 2000s and more recently in 2022-2024. We now know that it is possible for animals to contract the virus through the ingestion of contaminated food. This means that it is important to take measures that will reduce the risk of avian influenza for both pets and humans.
What Measures Are We Taking to Make Sure Yeeter Snax Treats Are Safe?
Freeze drying does not inactivate the virus, so all poultry products will be heat treated after freeze drying to an internal temperature of 145 Fahrenheit, which has been shown to inactivate the virus.
Since H5N1 hasn’t been found in the Canadian beef or dairy industry, we won’t be heat treating beef treats at this time. We will be monitoring cases and outbreaks in Canada and will adjust our processes if needed.
