Thank you Dr Wenrich for speaking to my freshman seminar class recently showcasing your career path. Dr Wenrich is a Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences graduate and completed a master's degree while a reproductive biologist for Merck before attending veterinary school. She is currently a small animal veterinarian.

Dr Wenrich and I graduated from PSU together, but she completed a senior year veterinary rotation with me in practice.

9/11/2001 = Sophomore year of vet school before nutrition class
It took an estimated a combined 3.1 million hours to clean up 1.8 million tons of debris and besides the immediate death, there have been hundreds since due to exposure side effects. For my undergraduate students, this is history to them. They were born after 2001.
While many can't remember the emotions from that day personally, I hope we can demonstrate and exhibit the collaboration and togetherness that happened in response to that horrific event. Multiple disciplines working together. People caring for each other. A One Health approach to recovery, support, and moving forward.

Rabies in the news.... it's an ongoing endemic public health concern. Here are 2 recent stories, from Canada (bat exposure) and the ongoing seal crisis in South Africa. The photo is from the CDC of a positive Direct Fluorescent Antibody test, still the gold standard of diagnosing rabies in a section of brain tissue post-mortem. The bright green color is the rabies virus. A negative result will have not fluoresce.

We like to briskly walk while our son runs the local park's frisbee golf course for his XC workout. Tonight, a local farmer was mowing down the grassy areas between the fairways (excuse my frisbee ignorance in terms if I'm wrong -- we never actually play!). It smelled WONDERFUL. It's not commercial feed quality, but smells like it! We walked 5 miles tonight. ❤️👃🏼

*Sidenote. This is a good reminder that having your hay/feed tested is so important for nutritional quality for your animals. This smells and looks good tonight. It is not a field of commercial/feed-grade hay. Talk to your veterinarian today about forage testing your own or purchased feeds.

We took our class discussions for VBSC340 - Introduction to Human & Veterinary Public Health (Introduction to One Health) outside last week! Topics for that day focused around (US) government, NGO, and social determinants of health. Thank you to the students for humoring me and for contributing to the conversation.
