This is Keller, his owner adopted him and is not certain of his past. She does know that he dose NOT like his nails trimmed. She has tried at different places, and was recommended he be sedated for nail trims.
Due to his age she wanted to try one last time before having him sedated, and she searched and she found me.
I agreed to come meet him and work with him with her. He has growled when his feet have been touched and given warning signs that he does not like it.
The first visit went well, I got to know him and we tried to trim his nails the way I trim most dogs nails. We also used baby food to try and distract him. It worked for about two nails. At that point he gave me warming signs, due to his size and for safety because the owner had a basket muzzle we agreed we should put it on him. Once the basket muzzle was on we put some baby food on it for him to focus on. Though he didn't care for the baby food, he was much better with it on. Nail trim a success with low stress on him.
The second time I went to trim his nails, we put the basket muzzle on right away as we already know he is reactive. You can see in the video he does give me a warning but because of the muzzle cannot bite which allows me to keep hold of his foot. Once he realizes he does not get rewarded for this behavior by getting his foot back he stops trying and I am able trim the rest. He does attempt this a few times, but in the end is a happy dog and loves his treats afterwards.
I would also like to add I'm not hurting him as you can see once he stops and realizes I'm not letting go he looks around. He does t try to pull his foot away at all.
