Expression of Interest – happy hens looking for new pastures!

After four years of growing our pastured egg operation, we are accepting expression of interests for the sale of our egg business. We are in no hurry to sell and will of course continue to supply our eggs until our chickens have a new home. It’s all about finding the right person.

We are proud to have built a solid business with a loyal and growing customer base, stretching across the Western Downs, Maranoa and Toowoomba regions. We thrived through COVID and our regular customer continues to grow through our online subscription service.

Our customers are drawn to us because they like to know where their eggs come from, that they are produced ethically and sustainably by happy and healthy hens, and that they will always be receiving farm fresh produce.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone just starting out in farming and food production or for an existing producer to diversify their product offering and/or extend their current production capability.

The hard yards have already been done and the business is now a smooth-running machine, ready to supply the ever-increasing demand for pastured free-range eggs.

Our reason for selling is our pastured egg and pork production business has grown to the point that we need to either clone ourselves, or find someone else to take over one arm of the business. We have decided to focus of our pig operation to advancing genetic and production. This doesn't leave us time for the continued expansion of the egg operation.

If you have free pastures, this business comes with everything you will need to smoothly relocate and quickly transition to full production.

The ducklings aren’t exactly ducklings anymore! 🥰

Someone asked me yesterday if farming was a dream come true (you know who you are 😍❤️).

While there are a lot of sacrifices we’ve made to do this — ahem, tiny house/composting toilet living! 🤣 — I think I would still say yes.

Watching animals be born or hatch, observing impressive animals mamas, seeing animals live out species-appropriate lives… all those things are really some of the absolute best parts.

It’s something about being connected to a fraction of the other species that make up this planet with us. 🌎💚

☘️Happy Spring from all three flocks! 🐓

We’ve never had this many chickens that are all this young before, so needless to say this spring we have the most eggs we’ve ever had. 🤗

(We’ve had this many hens at once before but some were 3-4 years old at that point, so not laying as prolifically. Now our oldest flock is 18 months old.)

Flock 1 (first photo) is Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds and Isa Browns.

Flock 3 (second photo) is Amberlinks, Barred Rocks, Australorps and Easter Eggers.

Flock 2 (third photo) is Amberlinks, Pearl White Leghorns, Black S*x Links and Isa Browns.

They’re each in similar mobile coops on old trailers with nest boxes inside and roost bars on the outside. We don’t have a big enough issue with aerial predation to warrant a different design.

They each have a minimum of about a quarter acre (10,000 square feet) at time as we use 100 foot by 100 foot paddocks with Premier 1 Supplies electric poultry net fencing.

That’s how we do pastured eggs up here! With our rainfall (and their impact on wet pasture), 400-500 birds max per flock has worked better for us than keeping all 1200 of them together.

I was gone for a week visiting family .
And not only did our farm team rock it and keep things running smoothly, but they also moved more than half of the pullets out from their hoop house barn to their pasture coop. I’ve never missed a nighttime pullet move out and I gotta say, it feels pretty nice to have it happen without my help. 🤣😍

We are fortunate to currently have a fantastic employee who only lives 15 minutes away, so she and her husband came on Saturday night to help Grant load the birds into the poultry crates and then our other fantastic employee was already scheduled for Sunday morning and helped Grant unload them in the field.

Appreciate you, Danny and Alaura (and Zach!)!! 🙏💗🙏

Grant also managed to score a sweet little manure spreader at an estate scale and find a group of 9 Black Angus/Red Angus/Limousin/Pineywoods crossed steers (yes quadruple cross!) to buy and they’re being delivered tomorrow!

So I got some family time and a little vacay and the farm made some big progress without me here. 💪❤️

Duck Eggs are healthy. On nutritional aspect, the eggs of ducks are better than chicken eggs. Duck eggs have more magnesium, calcium, iron, vitamin B12, vitamin A, thiamin, etc. per 100 grams. They are a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, which are vital for a normal human metabolism.
The Vitamin B12 that is present in duck eggs offers a protection against heart disease and cancer. Further, duck eggs provide Vitamin A, which protects eyesight and maintains the health of blood and skin. It is rich in selenium, which enhances the immune system. Also, it provides choline, which stops liver damage from fats and cholesterol and helps with muscle control. Additionally, it is rich in riboflavin (B2), which is a powerful antioxidant.
Their larger more fat more cholesterol yolks give duck egg a rich taste, not just in baking, but everyday eating. Plus, ducks are amazing for your gardens pest control and nothing beats duck antics!

The are 4 whole weeks old! Their personalities are coming out, and it’s hilarious. We also can tell who is very much the bottom of the Pecking Order, which is quite the appropriate term 😂…Poor gal. She’s precious, though and we have our eye in the situation. They’re so fun and it’s great to watch them grow!

We have been very busy with life here , with lots of good things in the works 🙏🏼✝️…
Meanwhile, our baby Barred Holland chickens have been growing beautifully and are ready for their new “mobile” home outdoors to free range! They wait patiently for their coop to be built, and awe us with their sweet, friendly dispositions.

I'm going to try and start doing a weekly 🥚 post to help everyone know what we have. Keep in mind we normally get about a dozen a day from both chickens and ducks so if we are out, just wait a day ha!

For 🍳, we have 2 dozen ducks and 4 dozen chickens.

For hatching, we have 5 dozen ducks and chickens don't ask 💊. The chickens are barnyard mix and the ducks are welsh harlequin and silver appleyard.

They go fast so don't miss out!
