I don't "train" (mostly) dogs not to bite or shy away although I do completely change that behavior. I am not a "whisperer". I don't show them new habits like sit or stay, although I do for my own, and I don't tell them anything, aloud or in a whisper. No.
Instead, I "listen" to what they are "saying". I watch their body language which is pretty universal. I see what the triggers are (while trying to keep my hands far away!). I work with that, triggering on purpose every now and then until there is no more reaction. That only happens when they no longer feel threatened and are comfortable enough to be themselves. They don't always emerge with the nicest traits sometimes (like being p**p eaters - eww!) but you know what you have to work with and must do it in a completely nonthreatening way (even as your head is in the bag). I use tons of treats to bring their thinking from Life Is So Crappy to I Love My Life.
Once they love their lives, they can be trained to do almost anything. Because they'll want to.
