The temperatures in the UK are set to rise this week and it is imperative that we stay vigilant to the danger that this may pose to our pets.

As well as heat stroke, there is a risk of water intoxication from drinking a large volume of water in a short period of time and salt poisoning from drinking too much seawater if you are visiting the coast.

Salt poisoning can result in vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, drinking excessively, and in severe cases convulsions. If you are at the beach, always provide access to fresh water for your dog and do not allow your dog to drink copious amounts of seawater.

If playing with water in the garden (e.g. in a paddling pool or with a hose) be careful not to allow your dog to drink too much water over a short period of time because this can lead to water intoxication. Signs of water intoxication included vomiting, lethargy, weakness, coma and convulsions.

If your pet is unwell with suspected heatstroke, or is showing signs of possible water intoxication or salt poisoning, consult your vet immediately.

☎️If you are a veterinary professional and have a case, please contact VPIS on 0207 305 5055.

Did you know that there are 4 times as many vets treating dogs affected by heat from walks than cars? ☀️ With temperatures rising, we urge every dog owner to be savvy and mindful of the potential harm caused to dogs on warmer days.

We've seen too many people out walking and running with their dogs during hot weather, with their pets at serious risk of overheating. 🏃 Remember, if in doubt, don't go out!
