School is starting soon and I'm so excited to be going with Mom back to campus. Since I'll soon be meeting all sorts of new people I wanted to take this chance to remind people how to interact with a dog you may not know.
Always ask the handler: I'm super friendly and love to day hi to people but sometimes my Mom may not want me to say hi. Right now I'm learning manners and how to act in public so she may not want me to say hi at that moment. I could also not be feeling much like people that day.Just like you we dogs have our bad days and our sick days and we may not want to say hi. Please respect the handler when they say no to you saying hi and petting us.
Let us sniff you: While I love people I like to do a sniff test first. It helps me understand more about who you are and what you do. I can learn a lot in just one sniff. The best way is to calmly offer a closed fist for me to sniff.
Pet us under the chin: I love all pets but it can be intimidating for someone I don't know to be reaching over my head where I can't see. After I've sniffed you, you can pet me under my chin and I'll love it.
When we're done you're done: Again I love people and definitely love attention but I have limits. Sometimes I'm focused on something else or just want to be done. It's nothing personal I'm just done right then. If I turn or walk away then please don't keep me. No one likes being restrained against their will.
I'm super excited to meet all sorts of new people. If you see me around feel free to say hi just remember the steps above. First day of school here we come.
