Munchie had a follow up appointment with our regular vet, Dr. Ashley at City Park Animal Clinic. The swelling has reduced greatly, but it is still there and more localized. They took xrays of her head to see what was going on in there. Because of her kidney disease her body seems to be leaching calcium from her bones and her jaw is very fragile right now and a couple of molar roots are dangerously close to poking through the bone. Surgery is not really an option at this point, they could break her jaw trying to remove the teeth. Her bloodwork is awful, her kidney levels are worse as is her anemia. We also sent off bloodwork to see what her calcium levels look like and we will get the results back in about 10 days (I will be on pins and needles until then!) When she first came to me in April she was given 3-6 months based on her bloodwork. It has now been almost 8 months. And normally a kidney disease dog would not get to this point, their kidneys would give out long before this, but Munchie has such a zest for life and I know that is the only reason she is still with us. I am managing any discomfort she may have because of the swelling and bone density issue and will make sure what ever time she has left will be full of meeting new people and pizza crusts.
