It's Sunday and I can't help but look at my garden.

You see, it started with a seed. Seeds grew and flowered. Some died and some bore fruit.

In many ways, that simple microscopic decision that was so out of my character (city girl hello) has now led to many breakthroughs not just in the garden beds but also in my life.

Today, as I walked through my garden, I stand grateful and in awe at how the garden and me changed over the years. Blood, sweat and tears literally. But then, there is so much work to do that most times, we just go back to that decision of just planting a seed.

And honestly, sometimes, that is just enough.

The garden and I have been together since 2019.Longer than most of my romantic relationships really lmao. Hopefully, we will still be partners, hand in hand, in navigating this mess called living.

Good morning weekend farmers!

Took an early walk to admire the breeze after last night's heavy rains.

Plants are happy and my soul restored.

Happy weekend!

Hello everyone.

A bit shy about lack of updates but happy to be able to explore more alternatives offline when it comes to growing my own food like hydroponics and container gardening.

It's been two months since I started and tbh, really happy with the results like this first lettuce harvest.

Less soil, less fuss and just more harvests in abundance.

Morning, Homesteaders!

We're back again with new and improved updates on our backyard gardening starting off with before and after pictures of our veggies on hydroponic setup.

Here is our lettuce growth with top at 15 days old/days after sowing and at 22 DAS or 7 days after transfer.

Currently using UPLB's very own SNAP solution as nutrient source for these greens.

Will post the third and final harvest updates soonest!

We're back!

It has been a rollercoaster of a year due to the pandemic but we are determined to start this page again and add more helpful tips and advice in growing your own food in the comfort of your own homes.

For now, we have restarted our Grow Barrel project, a containerized urban gardening setup you can set and forget. True enough, it was a success. In just 12 days, we have sprouted our seedlings into full fledged plants.

Here's to growing despite the limits of our environments. Keep growing, keep thriving Homesteaders!

Back to work after a half year hiatus.

No posts as of late as I'm in the process of reorganizing my garden space. The raised beds seems not to work with my gardening style so I'm opting for a different solution.

Many plants died due to the heat of the summer so I had to regrow from scratch.

As they say, a garden takes time to grow so no worries, I will be updating as soon as possible.

Went into the garden and found cucumber fruits on my plant. But since the structure of the cucumber vine is still not sturdy as it should be, I decided to prune its first fruits. This is a common practice with cucurbit plants (cucumbers, ampalaya, kalabasa etc.) in order to bring better and longer harvests.

Soil muclching with leaves!

The leaves insulate the soil and protect against moisture loss around the seedlings.

Easy Peasy Kratky Method (Aquaponics Gardening)

Materials:

1 sprouted plant
1 container with lid (preferably milktea, softdrinks or liquor bottle)
1 round sponge (cut to size of the mouth of the lid)

Steps:

1. Cut sponge to the size of the lid hole.
2. Cut sponge as indicated in the photo.
3. Insert plant sprout (in this case, basil) inside the sponge.
4. Fit sponge into the mouth of the lid.
5. Fill cup with water until it reaches the lower part of the root. The space left without water allows for air to circulate around the roots for growth.
6. Place in a moderately shaded area.

Hope this helps!

Post your own version as well in the comments section.

Happy planting!
