Poppy and Zsófi are gorgeous sisters (lime green and white collars) from our Grassroots litter. They live fairly close to each other and are lucky enough to have weekly play dates!! It warms our hearts to know these two siblings continue to have such a great bond and loving relationship!! 💚🤍 🐕 🧭
Tessie says, let’s talk about good manners in public! As the weather gets warmer and the world starts to open back up, it’s time to fine tune the good behavior.
* don’t allow reactive barking. Although your kuvasz is a guardian breed, they are known for their great sense of judgement. But like any teenagers, youngsters will try on different behaviors. Barking at strangers, dogs, kids, bikes etc should NOT be tolerated. Clearly communicate your dislike of this behavior with a verbal and leash correction. Kuvasz should be INDIFFERENT unless threatened.
* don’t allow strangers to invade your dogs space. Your pup should be respected and not be put in a position to feel uncomfortable. If someone asks to pet your dog, release your dog to say “hi” and if they choose not to...don’t force it!
*walk your dog in a controlled position (heel) at all times when on a leash. Keep them under command (sit, down, heel) while on a leash. This will make your dog feel more confident and know exactly what’s expected of them.
*find the right equipment (leash and collar), these are big, very powerful dogs, the wrong equipment will make your feel out of control. Leash and collar are a communicator, use them as such!

Less than 5 minutes of brushing produced this mound of hair from 11 month old Tessie. The kuvasz coat has an amazing way of sloughing off dirt and mud, remaining “dog smell” free and requiring very minimal bathing. However, it’s a year round shedding experience and there is always dog hair on everything you own. We think it’s worth every lint roller we have to buy! 🐕 🧭 🐾
The Grassroots pups are 9 months old! We are hearing that some of the girls have gone into heat/season (don’t stop reading boy parents there’s stuff for you too here) A few things to remember: keep females in season away from intact males for one month from the first day you find bleeding, you will see some swelling in their private areas and ni***es (all normal!), many females do a great job of keeping clean, if not there are many products on the market (diaper type) to help with the mess, keep your ladies on leash at all times for a month.
This is a critical time for both males and females in their development. Although they look like adults they are not! Bones, joints and muscles are still forming and their hormones HELP that process. This is one of the many reasons why we require waiting until the age of 2 to alter your dog.

Although the Grassroots litter are all getting so big, they are still very much puppies! Giant breeds are very slow to mature physically and mentally. Set your expectations for training and behavior high but remember they are still babies. Tessie is getting her silly on this morning on a hike 😍💙 🧭
I'm Tessie (formerly known as Light Blue, and formally known as Ederra Kompass Elso Trail Less Traveled) - Today I turn 6 months old! I have learned soo much in my first 6 months of life and have had so much fun! Right now my favorite things are going for hikes, playing with my Elkhound sister, Kiwi and going to work with my human mom every day. Maturing is HARD and I'm going through a phase of being wary of new things and people, but my mom knows with consistent socialization and training I'll get through it. I LOVE to bark at dogs going by the house, play with stuffed toys (I never chew them) and rip up anything that might be paper (so fun!). I'm very snuggly and still like to be picked up! I'm working hard on obedience and mom says I'm going to be getting my CGC soon and maybe going to some obedience matches. I would LOVE to hear how my 10 other brothers and sisters are doing on their HALF YEAR BIRTHDAY! Drop and update with pictures below...we'd love to hear from you!
Has your pup found their voice? We are hearing that the pups are starting to try on their “big dog” voices lately. Don’t worry, this is all a normal part of the maturing process. This is a critical time to be clear with them on what you want/don’t want for behavior! Demand barking, nuisance barking, alarm barking (at people or dogs) should not be tolerated. Barking to announce arrivals, barking at prey, barking in play...all normal! Just make sure you are communicating clearly on what you want with firm verbal communication. Be careful you are not rewarding for bad behavior by giving food rewards or praise after a bad barking spell! Telling your pup what’s right and wrong will help them to mature into the intelligent, confident kuvasz they are meant to be! 🐕 🧭 🐾

The Grassroots Pups are starting to look like little adults! Even though Tessie (light blue) is 40lbs and 20” at the shoulder she still believes she is a lap dog. I adore the sweet, loving nature of this whole litter! 🐕 🧭 🐾

Happy 16 weeks to the amazing Grassroots litter!! I have heard from just about all the owners this week, and everyone reports their pups are amazing! We love that the common theme is that they are social, sweet and unphased by new things. Our goal is always temperament first and I’m so pleased with these puppies and even MORE happy that all the family’s adore them!! Updated photos for you to enjoy! 🧭 🐕 🐾
In typical kuvasz fashion, Tessie must do things HER way. A group verbal “down” and she insists on moving over a foot before following the command. 😂 🐕 🐾 🧭
Today Tessie and her Grassroots littermates turn 14 weeks old! She celebrated by attending her first “Advanced Obedience” class in busy downtown Bangor. These puppies are alllll so confident, easy going and unflappable. I’m so proud of them all! 💙🧭🐕 🐾

Although kuvasz don’t require a lot of grooming, they do require frequent brushing. Getting your pup used to brushing (we use a fine bristle slicker brush at this age), nail clipping, ear cleaning and bathing is very important! Tessie got a quick brush and a nail dremmel today. Lots of treats and keep it to very short sessions, grooming will be a breeze for life! 🐕 🐾💙

It’s NEVER too early to start training! Puppies brains are like sponges at this age, so cram as much knowledge in there as you can! Tessie is showing you her skills with “place”, “sit” and “down”. All quickly achieved with simple behavior shaping. Train early, train often! 🐕 🐾 👩🎓
