Our last event was 18 and over ranch rail. Him and I were getting pretty tired by this point and getting a little hangry so it wasn’t our best class. I ended up placing second in the class.
Our third class that I showed in was the junior horse pleasure: 4-5 year olds. I could have shown him in the open pleasure but I though it was only fair to show in his age range of horses. He did really good in this class as well, he had a couple of rushy starts in the trot and was a little more forward in the one way of the lope. But, he was extremely consistent for a mustang with six ish months of training. He ended up winning this class as well and received a trophy for it too.
Our second event that I did at the show was 18 and over English pleasure. This was probably his seventh or eighth time being ridden English so I was pretty pleased with him, especially with the kind of horses that he was with. I wasn’t riding him forward enough to have him be truely English but he did listen to me the whole time and never broke gait. He placed first and won a trophy in this class
This last Saturday I decided to take Johnny on a trip to his first show of this year, which was black and white days in Richmond Utah. It was a really good refresher show cause it was pretty low key but they had a festival going on outside so he got to hear lots of commotion and chaos. Here is our first event we showed in which was 18 and over showmanship. You may recognize this pattern because it’s the same pattern I showed at the other day Mustang Challenge. I would say he nailed his pivot a lot better than previously, he is still very sluggish on this trot offs, but for an immediate set up in front of the ring Stewart, I’ll take it. We ended up placing second right behind a really nice all-around quarter horse. This class ended up having like eight or nine horses in it.
A couple days ago, one of our trainer friend graciously allowed us to raid his arena and work our mustangs over our obstacles. Now you may not believe me but this is basically his first time ever walking over the teeter totter bridge(the first time was literally a second before my mom could pull her phone out and video. He never batted an eye or even thought about veering of the bridge. I’m so happy in this little mans progress. He is still up for adoption so if your looking for a great partner then don’t de afraid to ask.
While at saint George I got the chance to help gain johnnys trust over the teeter totter bridge, he has never been to fond of the drop and tilt of the bridge(even the small wooden bridge on a log). After several days of me advancing him from walking next to it to walking over it I finally got some video, he is definitely figured it out and has relaxed a ton!
This past weekend my dad and I decided to escape from the freezing northern Utah weather and snow, to travel to Saint George for the week to spend in more manageable weather. It was nice to relax for a bit, we stayed at rainmakers equestrian park and rode in there arenas, and on there connecting trails, and we even made a trip to sand hallow state park to play in the water! Johnny did great, considering it was my first time loping in water.
After the competition Johnny got a few weeks off then we got right back to work. Two weeks ago, my dad wanted to take his mustang magic mare to a sorting to get her used to the noise and the commotion. Johnny and Cloudy worked really well on the cows!
And just for fun I had my dad sign up and show Johnny in the open show trail! He did really good through the whole pattern, he did miss a lead but for having 40 rides it was hard to lope of on the right lead in such a tight area. He ended up placing sixth in the open division against yet again horses with a year + training on them!
For my last class of the required classes in the trainer challenge I competed in a freestyle class. It didn’t necessarily go the way I had planned but for 40 rides and my first time showing a mustang that I trained under saddle by myself I felt happy. I ended up placing first in this class out of the other three in the trainers challenge.
While at the show I decided to show in some extra not required classes like this extreme trail course. They set it up during the beginning or the first show day while we were showing showmanship and trail. When they are ready to start the class the have a competitor walk through where they tell you what the obstacles are and how many points each one is worth. There is not an exact pattern to the whole thing but you are trying to get as many points as you can in three minutes. So while waiting for my turn I had to decide which ones I wanted to try and which ones where to scary(for my standards not johnnys). He did amazing and handled everything really well we even ended up sixth behind horses that have competed before and have a year or more of training on them.
Here is my second class that I got to show In, it was mounted trail. Johnny felt really good all the way through the pattern he had no bobbles and wasn’t scared or worried about anything. He tried through the whole pattern and never said no to anything(he never does). We ended up placing first in this class against the three other trainer challenge horses.
Sorry for not updating in so long but her is johnnys showmanship run from the southern wild horse and burro festival. When we arrived in Saint George, Johnny was more excited than normal so I made sure to ride him several times before show day, I apparently made him too tired which caused him to lag on his trot offs. We ended up placing first in this class out of the three other trainer challenge horses!
Last ride before we head out tomorrow, he has become such a great partner! He has gone from reactive and flighty to mellow and content. I would love to see this beautiful boy continue with greatness and a loving home!
Here is the trail video from the show, Johnny did amazing with it being his first time being ridden in this arena. My dad showed him first and he did amazing for him, he also tried really hard with me even thought I had a couple tiny pilot errors. Johnny ended up placing second with my dad and third with me. My dad won the division with dolly a mustang my dad has had for a year.
