Organic goat kefir!

Find it only at OLLY&MUMMY store!

Kefir has a whole host of health benefits for dogs and cats, including gut and skin health, as well as allergy prevention!

Kefir is a fermented milk drink that is popular in many parts of the world. It’s made by adding kefir grains to milk and allowing it to ferment.

Due to the fermentation process, much of the lactose in the milk is destroyed during fermentation, meaning even lactose intolerant people (and pups) can usually have kefir.

Kefir is an excellent source of probiotics, which are live bacteria that are beneficial for gut health. Probiotics are often referred to as ‘good’ or ‘friendly’ bacteria, and they help to keep the balance of microbes in the gut. An imbalance of gut microbes has been linked with a range of health problems, including inflammatory bowel disease, skin conditions, and allergies.

For dogs, kefir can be a nutritious and healthy addition to their diet. The probiotics in kefir can help to restore the balance of gut microbes and improve digestive health. They can also help to boost the immune system and fight allergies.

Kefir is rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins, and it can be a great way to boost your dog’s nutrition. It is also low in fat and calories, making it a healthy choice for dogs who are overweight or have diabetes.

The amazing benefits of kefir for dogs and cats include:

Promotes healthy digestive system

Creates healthy skin and coat

Counteracts bad breath

Prevents allergies

Contains muscle-building protein

How much kefir can dogs and cats consume?

Dogs and cats should consume 1 to 2 teaspoons of kefir per 15 lbs of body weight. So a 15 lb dog can have 1 to 2 teaspoons per day, a 30 kb dog can have 2 to 4 teaspoons, etc.

The most controversial topic when it comes to feeding your pet! 😾🗯

Despite arguments against it, mixing raw with kibble is not only safe but scientists in Finland have found adding some fresh food to your dog’s ultra-processed food can add significant health benefits. Several studies have found adding a small amount of raw or fresh food to your pet’s bowl can reduce inflammatory markers associated with several diseases, including IBD, allergies, and cancer. So next time you're preparing a healthy meal for you and your family, add some fresh food from your refrigerator to your pet's bowl as well! 🐶🥩🥦

Today in the Inside Scoop, the Rawpetmedics (Dr. Nick Thompson, Dr. Brendan Clarke, and Dr. Conor Brady) are joining me to discuss the do’s✅ and don’ts❌ of feeding your pet a raw food diet and help dispel some raw food myths and fears.

We’ll also be covering topics like:
🔥How to get started with raw
🔥Balancing with whole foods vs supplements
🔥The impact of bad quality meat on dogs and the environment
🔥How to make your pet’s water better

Whether you’re new to feeding fresh food or you’re an experienced raw feeder, you won’t want to miss this episode! Join us today at noon ET for this lively discussion! Looking forward to seeing your questions in the chat! 🙌

What Does CBD Oil Do For Dogs?
There’s a messenger system in your dog’s body called the endocannabinoid system. It helps regulate sleep, appetite, pain, the immune system and more. CBD impacts the activity of the messengers in this system and stimulates the nervous, digestive and immune systems, as well as the brain. And it can do this because the endocannabinoids in CBD are very similar to the ones found in your dog’s body.

That’s why the benefits of CBD can be deep and significant. And why CBD oil is the fastest-growing healthy plant in the world!

Benefits:

Pain Relief
Anti-inflammatory
Improves Digestive and Immune System
Allergy Relief
Can help with Epilepsy & Seizures (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association published this study )
Regulates mood and behaviours
Promotes healthy sleeping patterns
Helps in Arthritis (a study done by Baylor College of Medicine shows that 9 of the 10 dogs who received CBD showed benefits after a 4 week treatment)
Anti-Cancer Effect
Helps in Hip & Joint pain caused by osteoarthritis ( the University of Cornell, NY United States, showed that in just 2 weeks, CBD oil benefited dogs with Osteoarthritis)

How To Choose The Best CBD Oil For Your Dog

1. Look For A Full Or Broad Spectrum H**p
Check the label of your CBD product to make sure it’s full spectrum or broad spectrum.

This means your dog’s CBD oil contains not just CBD, but other important cannabinoids that occur naturally in full-spectrum h**p. This includes CBC (Cannabichromene) and CBG (Cannabigerol).

2. Make Sure Your Dog’s CBD Uses CO2 Extraction.
As you’ve probably guessed, CO2 extraction uses carbon dioxide to extract oil from the plant. Using a high-pressure chamber, CO2 puts pressure on the h**p. This breaks down the h**p and releases the oil.

This method of extraction creates oils with a higher concentration of CBD. That means your dog will get more from his supplement. Of course, that also makes the product more expensive … but it’s better than the alternative.

3. Look For A Certificate Of Analysis
If your dog’s CBD oil doesn’t have a certificate of analysis (COA), run away!

A recent peer-reviewed paper found owners reported flea & tick products🦟 using the potent pesticide, Isoxazoline💦, cause a reaction in 2 OUT OF 3 DOGS!

Reactions include seizures, behavioural issues, muscular/balance issues, and even death.

The pesticide can be found in products like: NEXGARD, NEXGARD SPECTRA, BRAVECTO, SIMPARICA, CREDELIO, REVOLUTION PLUS, and others.

This pesticide is so powerfully potent🔥 that it starts killing within two hours after administration! In fact, it kills 98.7% of newly arriving fleas within 24 hours! Because of this, Isoxazoline drugs now carry a warning⚠️ on their labels in both the U.S. and Canada. Even the FDA-U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning statement for veterinarians and pet parents.

BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE RAW DIET!🍗🥩🥬🥥🥕🥑

Genetically, the dog, Canis Lupus Familiaris, is very closely related to the wolf.
Dogs and wolves share 99.8% of their mitochondrial DNA (Wayne, R.K. Molecular Evolution of the Dog Family). This next quote is from Robert K. Wayne, Ph.D., and his discussion on canine genetics (taken from www.fiu.edu/~milesk/Genetics.html).

They lived in a biologically appropriate environment. In the wild, a wolf’s diet consists of bones and meat, organs, decaying material, and partially digested vegetable matter in a raw food state. They even eat faeces (Billinghurst, n.d.). According to Billinghurst (n.d.), “Wolves actually obtain healthy bowel bacteria along with proteins, fatty acids, vitamins, and fibre through faeces.” A species natural food is biologically adapted to their heritage from thousands of years ago. Dogs are scavengers and have lived in a world of bacteria and germs for thousands of years. They have eaten dead animals and carrion and have thrived through generations of dogs.

Eighty million species on earth thrive on raw food. Only humans and domesticated pets largely consume a cooked processed diet filled with unhealthy ingredients, chemicals, and preservatives.

Consequently, we and our pets suffer from many chronic ailments like arthritis, cancer, diabetes, and other degenerative diseases.

Eating whole foods results in a lower risk of these chronic diseases.

ADD SOME FRESH FOOD!!!

ADD SOME FRESH FOOD!!!

The fresh food movement is growing. Even those pet parents who aren't ready to go all fresh, or to try feeding a raw diet, are learning to add fresh foods to the kibble bowl, or to feed them as snacks and treats.
It is one of the Repawsitory's goals to encourage followers to freshen up their dogs' diets. As little as 20% has the potential to benefit health without upsetting the overall balance of the diet being provided by a high quality kibble. (If you feed more than 20% fresh, you need to get informed and consult professional and experienced sources to ensure you continue feeding a balanced diet).
Pictured here are whole food adds that are some of our favs. Gently steam veg and leafy greens. If serving raw, fine chop or blitz thru the blender. You can also serve plant matter mashed, pureed, or fermented to improve digestibility. When you cook, and if you wanna go all out, then do so gently and use moist cooking methods with indirect heat.

HERE’S WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO ADD FRESH “HUMAN FOOD” TO YOUR PET’S KIBBLE

Today, ninety-six percent of pet owners around the globe are feeding dry commercial pet foods. Of those 96%, there is a large majority that believes dried commercial pet food is really all their pet needs and would never stop to consider the benefits of adding fresh “human food”.

(“Human food” definition in this article: clean sources of meat-based proteins and some organic plant matter, not beer and nachos 😉)

There are many reasons why some of these pet parents feel this way, however the most popular reason today seems to be the 50-year-old rumor that is in existence and still spreading.

You know the one: “Giving your animal table scraps is bad!”

How or when did this terrible rumor start?

Well, if we go back in time, research shows that shortly after the invention of processed pet foods, manufacturers were having a hard time convincing pet parents to make the switch from foods in their refrigerators to their commercial pet foods.

So in 1964, the pet food industry, along with the PFI, joined together with a whole bunch of marketing dollars and launched one of the most influential campaigns the pet world had ever seen: the “Ban All Table Scraps from your Pets’ Bowls” campaign!

Through thousands of newspapers, magazines, and news stations, the public was warned about the dangers of table food scraps or “human food” and the importance of feeding “processed” commercial pet food. From there, the giant smear campaign took off!

Not only did this clever campaign work, but it was so impactful that now, 50 years later, folks are still in fear of offering anything that is not labeled pet food.

SO IS IT A GOOD THING TO ONLY OFFER YOUR PET DRIED KIBBLE?

Not according to ongoing research it isn’t, especially with today’s cancer rates being 1 in 2 dogs!

In a 2005 study conducted at Purdue University on Scottish Terriers, the results showed that adding fresh vegetables to dry commercial kibble actually prevented and/or slowed down the development of transitional cell carcinoma (aka bladder cancer)!

In the study, dogs ate a diet of dry commercial pet food, while some got an assortment of vegetables added to the mix at least 3 times per week.

When the study was concluded, according to the researchers, they weren’t really shocked by the results.

Here’s what they found:

Dogs that ate any green leafy vegetables, like broccoli, had reduced the risk of developing bladder cancer by 90% and the dogs that consumed any yellow – orange vegetables like carrots reduced the risk by 70%!

Seriously! A lousy carrot helped smash the potential of cancer.

( http://ilarjournal.oxfordjournals.org/content/55/1/100.full ) (Raghavan, Knapp, Bonney, 2005) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/16013542/

Yes, of course cats are obligate carnivores (must have meat to survive) and our dogs are facultative carnivores (carnivores with omnivorous potential if circumstances demand) so offering clean meat-based protein sources should always be top priority and essential.

However, because today’s world is ever-so changing due to factory farmed livestock being fed genetically modified grains and our planet being contaminated with every type of pesticide, fungicide and larvicide, the importance of fresh, organic plant matter to help detox the body couldn’t be more crucial.

So if the “cancer reducing benefit” doesn’t tickle your fancy enough to convince you to add any “human fresh foods” to your pet’s bowl, then maybe think of it this way:

How bad would it suck if someone forced you to eat dry processed foods your whole lIfe?!

FIND WHOLE FRESH SPRATS ONLY AT OLLY & MUMMY

🌿Why we feed: Fish in general is a great source of protein, calcium, selenium, niacin and Omega-3 fats for your dog. Giving whole fish is actually a much better way to give your dog omega 3’s than fish oil! Omega-3 fatty acids in fish are a natural anti-inflammatory to the body making it great for joint issues and IBD issues. Fish is an easily digestible protein source for dogs, especially dogs following digestive upset since it is relatively low in saturated fats and empty calories (good for weight control). Feed your dog the smaller fatty fish like sprats, sardines, smelts, herring, po***ck, mackerel and anchovies 🐟

🔁How we feed: Theres some misconception about fish bones that i would like to address! You can feed RAW fish bones around flesh safely but ALWAYS monitor your dog when feeding!

ALWAYS check the sourcing of your fish before buying and feeding because poor quality care or intensively farmed means increased toxin levels in the fish.

⚠️Freeze fish for at least two weeks before feeding it to help eliminate any possible parasites

You can feed fresh fish whole and raw two or three times a week. If your dog is like mine, my dog doesn’t enjoy the texture of thawed fish so I feed it frozen!

Be sure to always monitor when feeding 🐟

🗯 If you have tried everything and your pup isn’t a fan of fresh, whole fish, spirulina, kelp or green lipped mussels is a great way to get omegas into your pup’s diet which you can sprinkle over their meals.

Do not hesitate to contact us for more information✌️🙏

Your dog is NOT an omnivore. This belief was instituted by the pet food industry. The dog, by evolutionary history, is a domesticates wolf. Dogs and wolves share 99,8% of their DNA.

Dogs are facultative carnivores. They require fresh meat, organs and bones that their bodies are designed to consume, digest, assimilate and thereby thrive.

Kibble food is processed and synthetic, this means that is has been rendered, over cooked, over processed and contains artificial vitamins, chemicals, toxins, and carcinogenic preservatives.

Dogs and cats can survive by eating kibble but they will thrive eating a species appropriate diet that their bodies were designed to eat.

Nourish your dog, don ‘t simply feed them.

14/09/2020

Bell peppers are highly nutritious for both humans and dogs.

⚠️Vegetables should be lightly steamed, pureed or finely chopped for optimal nutrient absorption.

These vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals and low in calories. They have four times more vitamin C than an orange. Peppers contain powerful antioxidants that have great healing properties.

Peppers can help improve your dog’s cardiovascular system and protect her from free radicals.

Feed the Rainbow
Vegetables deeply pigmented in vibrant colors contain beneficial phytonutrients.

Phytonutrients are chemical compounds naturally created by plants to ward off predators, parasites, and disease. These nutrients are not considered essentual nutrients for optimal health. However, phytochemicals help maintain optimal canine health and are beneficial for specific conditions.

The six shades of the rainbow provide a specific type of phytonutrient within each color group. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and white represent the different antioxidants within vegetables and fruits.

Red
The bright and vibrant red hue of many vegetables is due to lycopene and anthocyanins. Both are powerful carotenoids known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits against free radicals.

Options include tomatoes, red bell pepper, and radishes.

Orange & Yellow
Beta-carotene is another widely studied carotenoid found in yellow and orange pigmented vegetables. Beta-carotene is a precursor to Vitamin A as the body must convert it to retinol, it’s usable form in the body. However, dogs have a very low conversion rate and cats are unable to convert beta-carotene to retinol.

Yellow and orange pigmented antioxidants provide the following benefits:
Immune boosting Disease prevention Anti cancer

Options include carrots, sweet potato, winter squash, summer squash, and yellow/orange sweet peppers.

You can’t rely only on commercial food (and especially not kibble) to give your dog everything she needs. Vegetables and fruits have huge benefits for dogs when you choose them properly.

WANT TO KNOW WHY THE LOW-COST, NUTRIENT-PACKED "SARDINE" IS A MUST ADD TO YOUR PET'S DIET PLAN? THEN CHECK OUT THE "TOP 10" REASONS WHY!

If you're like me, you’re always searching for an herb or whole food add that will help extend the life of your furry BFF.

But if I told you one of these treasures was a small, salt-water, soft-boned, oil-rich, silvery fish that smells worse than most grandparents’ feet, would you still try it out?

Hailed as one of the richest sources of omega-3, vitamin D and vitamin B-12 (to name a few), this whole food addition (which got its name from the Italian island of Sardinia) is called the sardine!

I can hear the groaning now... "Sardines look and smell gross!” most of you are probably saying.

True, but if you check out my top 10 reasons why you should ignore the smell and fall in love, you won't regret it AND your pet will love you for it!

Check out these 10 awesome reasons as to why this is a must-add:

1.) PROTEIN PACKED

Your carnivorous dog and cat need protein for proper muscle and connective tissue development. Protein provides structure for skin, hair, joints, bones and nails to name a few! Sardines and fish, which are considered a high quality protein, are full of the essential amino acids your pets cannot produce and need from this type food.

2.) JOINT AND BONE SUPPORT

Sardines are not only one of the most concentrated sources of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA for joint health, but they are packed with a rich source of bone-building and bone strengthening vitamin D!

3.) HEART HEALTH

Sardines are an excellent source of vitamin B12, which promotes an overall cardiovascular well-being. Now tie in the DHA and EPA that are also found in the sardine and you have a cocktail of awesomeness aiding in heart health!

4.) BEATS UP ON CANCER

Studies have shown that omega-3s found in the sardine can inhibit the formation of tumours and prevent cancer from metastasizing. They do this by inducing a process in cancer cells called apoptosis. Today, science is also showing that an ample source of vitamin D, from the sardine, may turn out to play an important role in the prevention of certain types of cancer as well.

5.) BRAIN HEALTH

Studies in people show that supplementing with DHA (found in sardines), is beneficial in supporting cognitive health in aging brains. A study on beagle puppies found DHA improved cognitive learning and motor skills during the developmental stages. Therefore, sardines help sharpen your pet's learning abilities, memory, eye function and psychomotor skills.

6.) HELPS RELIEVE ALLERGIES

Research suggests that supplementing with fatty acids found in sardines, is useful in preventing atopy (allergies to inhaled substances such as pollens and molds) from developing in young animals. Also, because of the incredible anti-inflammatory properties that the sardines carry, they are a great add to help reduce the chronic redness and inflamed skin some pets experience from these allergies.

7.) CAN HELP YOUR PET LOSE WEIGHT

The rich source of omega-3s found in the sardine can activate a type of protein that turns on fat-burning genes in your pet's body! Used correctly, they can help slim down pudgy pets.

8.) POSITIVE EFFECTS AGAINST SEIZING PETS

Research shows that the omega, packed in the sardine, contains potent anti-inflammatory properties that fight the inflammation mediators in epileptic patients while increasing seizure thresholds, in other words, helping to suppress attacks.

9.) KIDNEY SUPPORT

A study on dogs found that while omega 6 supplementation accelerated the decline in kidney function of early stages of kidney disease, supplementing with omega-3 had protective effects. In human studies, it was found that people with long-term use of fish oil, like the oil found in sardines, slowed the loss of kidney function!

10.) MOOD IMPROVER AND ANTI-DEPRESSANT

EPA and DHA found in sardines, according to research, can also improve mood. EPA from marine sources like sardines can decrease cytokines associated with depression.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF TOXINS FOUND IN TODAY'S FISH SUPPLY? AREN'T SARDINES POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS?

You see, sardines are a short lived fish. Therefore they don't have a lot of time to accumulate a ton of toxins from the water. They are at the bottom of the aquatic food chain as well, meaning they only feast on plankton. So they don't concentrate heavy metals, such as mercury, and contaminants as do other fish.

OK, NOW FOR THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION: HOW MUCH SARDINE SHOULD YOU FEED TO YOUR PET?

Let's go to expert and pet food formulator, Steve Brown, for this one shall we?

"The best canned sardines for dogs (and cats) are those in water with no salt added. Avoid sardines packed in soy, corn, sunflower, safflower, or other omega-6 rich oils.

Use the entire can of sardines within two days after opening it, and refrigerate the open can, so that the fragile fats do not go rancid.

Don’t overdo it! EPA and DHA, like most nutrients, provide wonderful health benefits in small amounts, and are detrimental in excess amounts or without sufficient antioxidant protection.

Here are my sardine recommendations for adult dogs.

Feed twice this much to puppies and pregnant or lactating females.

Dog’s Weight 3.75-oz can sardines
5 lbs 1/4 can per week
15 lbs 1/2 can per week
25 lbs 5/8 can per week
50 lbs 1 can per week
100 lbs 1 3/4 cans per week

A 3.75-ounce can of sardines has about 200 calories, so reduce the amount of dry food given on “sardine days” accordingly. Rule of thumb: One can of sardines in water has about the same number of calories as ½ cup of most dog foods.

For cats, no more than a 1/4 to maximum 1/2 a week.

Remember to always check with your veterinarian for specific doses, and always practice variation, moderation and balance when introducing new foods to your pets.

So go grab a clothes pin, plug your nose, and add some aquatic love to your pet's bowls. Most will love you for it!
