ADK Spay and Neuter is a valuable resource for our community. Let them know they're appreciated!

If you have an appointment for your pet in the next weeks or months; be sure to take a moment to THANK our staff for all the amazing work they do. Most people don't realize, but our day to day runs with a very small number of support staff. The person checking you in is likely also one of the people monitoring your pet, prepping for surgery, answering the phone, cleaning cages/surgical instruments, etc. Everyone here wears multiple hats and everyone pitches in to make sure all the tasks get done everyday. It's not unheard of to find our veterinarian helping bring pets out for discharge or even cleaning after all the animals have gone home. The people that work here do it because they find it rewarding, but at times it can be incredibly stressful. Make sure they know you appreciate how much they care, especially this time of year when everyone is incredibly stressed and a kind word goes a long way.

And from all of us, a big thank you to all those people that have already shown their appreciation in various ways in the past.

This friendly, emaciated kitty turned up on a dead-end road in Jackson recently. Anyone recognize? Some kind folks have taken him or her in and are feeding the kitty as it seems to need some serious TLC. If this is your kitty and it's wandered off and gotten lost, drop us a line.

Some major hurdles to helping animals locally are the facts that there is no county shelter, no public funds available to groups such as ours working to do what we can to improve the lives of local animals, and very little response from the powers that be when folks try to help animals they see being abused. This is a systemic failure and a failure of the community at large. If this an issue that you care about and you're a local resident, please take a few minutes to visit For Pet's Sake Veterinary Center page to learn about their efforts to move Warren and Washington counties forward toward clearing pathways to make animal welfare a priority.

Another great TNR workshop TODAY from Community Cats Podcast. The great thing about these: Community Cats Podcasts funds a grant program for small TNR groups like ours, and in fact our group (and this community) were past recipients. Trap-Neuter-Return is a grassroots movement that has spread all over the world as a humane means of managing populations of outside cats. The concept of TNR has mobilized many communities to take positive action. If you haven't gotten involved but would like to, check out this great podcast today at 2!

Major chapter of my life has closed. Have been looking after a feral colony that started out 15 cats strong for almost 12 years and this past Sunday I have lost the last cat.. 12 years of visiting them daily twice a day, rain or shine.

They have absolutely ruled my life without them knowing anything about it. Made decisions about my jobs and buying a house with them in mind, and did not go anywhere longer than 8-10 hours because they had to be fed.

The office building I worked in had a fire on a cold, snowy February night and we had to relocate to a nearby hotel temporarily. A day or two after I came back from lunch and parked in a new spot at the back of the parking lot. Before I could even turn my car off I was ambushed by a half or so dozen cats asking for food.. Naturally, I turned around and raided the nearby convenience store for cat food and the rest is history.

It has been an incredible experience, both happy and sad. Caring for ferals is very draining emotionally. The constant worry about them getting hit by cars in the parking lot, people messing with them or them getting sick/injured can be tough to deal with. On the other hand, seeing them prosper and bonding to you made it all worth it. Learned a lot about people as well along the way and most of it was not flattering.

It will be very weird not having to make the trip everyday. For those of you in NJ, they were known as the "Hilton cats" in Iselin.

We have some new kitties in our care! Orange tabbies Gino & Grace along with the male gray tabbies (yet to be named) came to us last week from two different sites. All had been living outside and are taking a little time to decompress before moving on to forever homes. Many thanks to fosters Kellie & Susan/Jenny (sister tag-team) for giving these little ones temporary homes, as well as all the behind-the-scenes volunteers who took part in bringing them in!
