Another PSA worth sharing!
PSA: Not always about cats, but if fake cobwebs are strong enough to snare an owl, they may easily entrap a kitten. It's not too early to start sharing this message, the season for these kinds of decorations will be here before we know it. 🎃👻🎃
We have Clynk bags available for anyone interested in donating their bottles and cans to support our cause. Drop us a line and we will make arrangements to get bags to you. All donations support our mission to improve the lives of area cats through spay neuter and TNR!
Please let us know if you’re doing any fundraising on our behalf (other than Facebook fundraisers). We’re glad to have any and all support & are happy to work with anyone interested in doing fundraising for us. We have collection cans available for any businesses wishing to put them out for donations.
It’s important that we keep track of fundraising activities undertaken on our behalf. We had an issue with a fundraiser earlier this year and learned (the hard way) the importance of spelling everything out very clearly to be sure all parties are on the same page.
Salem’s Community Cats is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit federal ID #84-4991280, and we’re registered as a public charity with the New York State Attorney General’s Office. We take seriously the responsibility to properly account for all donations made to SCC and be sure they’re used appropriately. If you’re planning any fundraising initiatives on our behalf, please drop us a line. Thank you!
Witnessing or suspecting abuse of a cat is traumatic, and it can be hard to keep calm and focused.
Knowing what to do ahead of time will help you accurately and effectively report animal cruelty, and help animals in your community achieve safety and justice.

Dairy products are not good for cats!
Can't say this enough. If cats living outside are given milk, we have no way of knowing the unpleasant/dangerous effects they may experience. (Vomiting and diarrhea cause dehydration, not good for cats that probably don't drink enough water. 😿)
Yes!
Luna, cuddle & sweet. Fully vetted and still waiting to be adopted.
Lovely Luna is a three-month-old lovebug in the market for a new home. She's good with kids and other cats, loves to cuddle, and loves to play. Our kittens are fostered in homes with families & exposed to everyday family activities, which makes their transition to their adoptive homes easy-peasy. Luna is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and FIV/FeLV negative. Apply at https://www.salemscats.com/adoptions
Oska has been with us since last December. She's waiting to be adopted...

Barn home needed for a semi feral kitty. Contact FACT - Feline Advocates Coming Together if you can help.
Variations of this have been circulating on Facebook and I don't know where it originally appeared, so can't give credit but sure wish I could! This is the reality right now. Local shelters are FULL and small rescues are overwhelmed. Spay neuter has never been so important. If people don't start taking the responsibility of pet ownership seriously this crisis will only escalate. And more innocent animals will be born into a world where there are no homes for them.

Great info from Feral Cat Project. Be sure your pets don't have access to any moldy food products.
This content originated from a vet clinic. PSA
"We have had a few cases of mycotoxin poisoning recently. Its not a poisoning that folks are generally familiar with, so we thought we'd share the information to raise awareness.-
Ingestion of mouldy food from the bin or a compost pile puts dogs, cats, horses, livestock, and even wildlife at risk for toxicity due to tremorgenic mycotoxins. These toxins may be found in MOULDY bread, pasta, cheese, nuts, or other decaying matter like compost. Clinical signs include vomiting, agitation, incoordination, tremors, seizures, and elevated body temperature. A specific mycotoxin called aflatoxin can even cause liver failure. Be sure to keep mouldy food and compost out of your pets reach!"
We feed community cats in town 365 days a year & have a continuing need for dry and wet cat food. If you would like to help out with a cat food donation, you can order from our Amazon wish list or drop us a line to donate directly. The community cats aren't fussy eaters!

Take care of yourself first and foremost.
Right now, the rescue, TNR, and animal shelter world is tough. So many wonderful people are doing everything they can (& more than they should), and it doesn't always feel like it's enough!
But please take care of yourself, set boundaries, and know that you are providing a valuable service even if you think you could do more.

This is the reality of what happens to free-roaming female cats who aren't spayed. It's not pretty. If you care about your pets, get them fixed. If you don't care, don't get pets.
Letting your unneutered female out, is subjecting her to this.
Taking refuge up a tree while 4 males wait to subject her to a horrible ordeal - she will try her hardest to get away - she will be chased and cornered until they manage to grab her - she will fight her attackers and suffer bites, cuts and bruises but won't win.
The noise of the attack will be ear splitting .... But yes, of course you love your cat.
She will then be pregnant, probably give birth in someone's garden or shed - not knowing when she will get food - some of the babies may die, but then so may your girl if she has a difficult birth (then any healthy babies will also starve to death).
But of course you love your unneutered girl, as you let her outside yet again !!
Please get your cats spayed / neutered!
Courtesy Post, please share! Contact person lost her dad & is trying to rehome this fella. Neutered older kitty who has been an only cat. Drop us a line if interested.
We're still trying to find a barn placement for two adolescent semi-feral kitties. Please drop us a line if you're looking for a couple of excellent mousers to control the rodent population in your barn.
If you're in the market for a pair of young barn cats, or know anyone who might be, please drop us a line. We are helping to TNR two young feral cats that are currently living next to a busy road, and their caretaker is hoping to find a quieter place for them to live. She's afraid they will be hit by a car if they aren't relocated. They have an appointment next week for their sterilization surgeries, so time is of the essence!
These kitties would need to be confined at their new location for a couple of weeks, and we would want to be sure that they're going to be looked after and regularly fed.
Please help us find a new home for these kitties so they can live out their lives safely. Cats are excellent natural rodent control!
No Empty Bowls is a pet-food pantry in Granville. Please share to spread the word about this wonderful local resource dedicated to helping pets stay with the families they love and who love them.
Food Distribution for 8.17 is all done.
8 families helped this weekend, with a total of 18 cats and 7 dogs not going hungry! In an of itself, that may not seem like a huge number, but that is just one weekend. Overall, we’ve got over 40 families that have received assistance each month and 140 cats and dogs that DON’T go hungry.
Help us in our continuing fight to make sure that no pet goes hungry, and that people can get assistance with their pet food needs, when they need that it.
Food and litter donations are always welcome, and monetary donations help with the costs of running the pantry.
Help us spread the word, please?

Oska! Apply at https://www.salemscats.com/adoptions
Oska is another of our kitties ready for adoption to the purrfect home! Her foster mom says: Oska is a wonderful indoor/outdoor kitty. With the warm weather she’s choosing to stay outside most of time. She’s very friendly and loving and a talker once she knows you. Loves play time and treats! She would do best in a home that has at least one other cat for she loves having a “buddy”. Oska is a fully vetted 8-month-old kitty. Apply to adopt her or any of our kitties at https://www.salemscats.com/adoptions
Oreo is a sweet girl who likes to play and loves her temptations and catnip toys! She enjoys being loved but can be a bit shy at times. She's learned how to use a cat door but chooses to be inside most of the time. She gets along great with other cats but dogs she's unsure about. She would do best in a fairly quiet home. Oreo is 8 months old and is fully vetted & Fiv/felv negative. Apply to adopt this sweetheart at https://www.salemscats.com/adoptions
Here's another video of Marv the kitten. Marv and his sibling Nettie are sweet, affectionate kitties who will be available for adoption in just a couple of weeks. Apply at https://www.salemscats.com/adoptions Check back often to see who we have available for adoption, and please don't forget about our three older kittens who are still waiting for good homes. Our kitties are all fully vetted prior to adoption. This means they're spayed/neutered and up to date with age-appropriate shots. We ask an adoption fee to help cover some of our expenses in having the cats vetted. The costs we pay exceed the adoption fee. It's a heck of good deal!
Free range kitten! Marv may still be trying to figure out where he fits into the world. He will be available for adoption in July. Check https://www.salemscats.com/adoptions for our currently available kitties. Many kittens coming your way soon!
These are the two very sick kittens rescued from the farm a couple of weeks ago. They're feeling much better!
Kitten pile! These four aren't ready for adoption yet, but if you want to see who we have available, check out our website https://www.salemscats.com/adoptions
More kitten antics! These three will be ready for adoption soon. Apply at https://www.salemscats.com/adoptions
Chico and Nala! These 7-month-old bonded siblings are fully vetted and available for adoption to a quiet home. Apply at https://www.salemscats.com/adoptions.
Update on the stray kitty with a broken leg taken in by a good Samaritan last week in Salem. As you can see he's doing really well after his surgery. His foster says it's almost impossible to get a picture of him because he just wants to be held! This very sweet fella is around 8 months old. In one short week he's had 3 names, 3 temporary homes, and 1 amputation. He's going to take a little break with his foster family for a bit and then he'll be available for adoption. Anyone still interested in contributing to his medical bills can do so below or on our website salemscats.com under the donate tab. His combined vet bills to date total $1056.24. We're very glad to be part of the solution for this amazing cat and so grateful to everyone who helped get him to where he is today. Now we just need to think of a name!
What a cutie! We've posted about Oreo a couple times. She's a very sweet 5-month-old kitten who loves to have a good time! Oreo is generally friendly but can be shy at times. She loves head rubs, doesn't want to be held. She's ok with other cats and should be fine with a calm dog. Oreo would do best in a quiet home. Oreo is up to date with vaccinations and Fiv/felv negative. Her adoption fee of $150 includes the cost of her spay at a later date. Apply to adopt Oreo on our website salemscats.com under the adoptions tab.
Nala and Chico are 14-week-old bonded siblings who are ready for adoption to the right home. Chico is very outgoing; Nala is still learning to trust people. Both kittens love to play and like to cuddle when they're tired out from tag. These are more of the many kittens we've taken in from outside, born to a feral mom. It's taking Nala a little longer than her brother to warm up to people, so we are looking for a household that will give Nala the time and space she needs as she continues to grow into her house-cat self. Nala and Chico are fully vetted. Their adoption fee is $250. Apply at https://forms.gle/Q6E4yJgJhFLsxLBz9
Video today of one of the cats that were dumped yesterday at a farm in cambridge. He's very vocal, as you can tell, and extremely friendly. He'll be a available for adoption in a couple of weeks, as soon as we can get him neutered and vaccinated. The cat who was dumped along with him is still hiding and will probably have to be trapped, unfortunately. This poor cat's terror at an unfamiliar environment is pretty common with house cats that get dumped outside. They aren't "fine" like some people seem to think. Anyone interested in giving a nice, young adult male cat a better beginning than the first one he had, please submit an adoption application, which can be found on our website salemscats.com under the adoptions tab.
This is a video we shared with you a couple of years ago, sent to us by a property owner who was overrun by dumped cats at her farm. We worked with her to TNR a dozen or so cats at that time, and the population has been stable ever since. We heard from her today because her neighbor witnessed someone dumping two cats on her property this afternoon. To whoever abandoned their pet cats on Beck Road in Cambridge today, you were spotted by a neighbor. The white and black cat is terrified and hiding in the back of the barn. The black one was too hungry to be scared and wolfed down the meal that was offered to him. If you think it's no big deal to leave your cat at a farm without permission, you're wrong. It's cruel, it's illegal, and it creates a huge headache for someone else. Donations from ordinary people covered the costs of getting the cats in this video fixed a couple of years ago. The total expense was over $1,000. Just 2 cats that aren't fixed could quickly undo all that hard work and put the site back where they were: overrun with cats breeding out of control. We've said it before and will surely say it again. If you can't afford to get them fixed, don't take on the responsibility of a pet! And stop dumping cats at farms!
Chico and Nala will be available for adoption soon! Check our website for details on how to apply. https://www.salemscats.com/adoptions
Onyx was spotted today by his caretaker on her cat-feeding rounds, so to celebrate his success story we're sharing this video of his release on 12/23/21 after he was trapped and neutered. Onyx was one of many offspring born to a feral mama cat in town. In fact, a litter born before Onyx was a even a twinkle in his daddy's eye were what motivated us to begin a TNR program in Salem. Today Onyx is a healthy, happy community cat living his best life, just like the many others we've caught and got fixed. TNR does work!
