November is Pet Diabetes Awareness Month!

🐕 Did you know that diabetes can affect both dogs and cats? Just like in humans, pet diabetes requires early detection and dedicated care. With proper management, diabetic pets can live long, healthy lives!

🐈 Common Signs to Look For:
• Increased thirst
• Frequent urination
• Unexplained weight loss
• Changes in appetite
• Lethargy or low energy

🐕 If you notice any of these signs, contact your veterinarian. With regular monitoring, a proper diet, and, in some cases, insulin therapy, diabetic pets can thrive.

Let’s keep our furry friends healthy! Spread the word about pet diabetes and make a difference. 🐾💙

🇺🇸 Thank You, Veterans, and the Animals Who Support You 🇺🇸

On this Veterans Day, we honor the men and women who have courageously served our nation—and the loyal animals who stood by them. 🐾

From military working dogs on the front lines to the pets who provide comfort at home, animals play a powerful role in the lives of many veterans, offering loyalty, love, and healing.

To our veterans: thank you for your service and sacrifice. And to their animal companions: thank you for the comfort and support you bring to our heroes. Today, we celebrate all of you. 💙❤️

Maggie came to see me this morning because she started shaking her head causing her to develop an aural (ear) hematoma.

Ear hematomas form when blood vessels in the ear flap break, causing the ear to fill with blood. 😣

🐕 Common in dogs (and sometimes cats), ear hematomas are often caused by:
• Excessive ear scratching or head shaking (due to allergies or ear infections)
• Trauma to the ear

🔍 Symptoms to watch for:
• Swollen, puffy ear
• Pain or discomfort when touched
• Shaking of the head

👩‍⚕️ Treatment usually involves draining the hematoma and addressing the underlying cause, like an infection or allergies. If left untreated, it can lead to ear deformities or pain for your pet.

In order to treat Maggie’s ear hematoma, we placed a teat cannula. This will allow the ear to continue to drain and help prevent the hematoma from reoccurring.

❤️ Maggie is recovering well at home and is getting lots of TLC!

🎃 Halloween can be fun, but it also presents hazards for pets. Here are key tips to keep your pets safe and stress-free:

1. Keep Candy and Treats Out of Reach
• Chocolate: Toxic to both cats and dogs, especially dark chocolate.
• Xylitol: Found in sugar-free gum and candies, it can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar in dogs.
• Raisins: Highly toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure.

2. Prevent Costume Mishaps
• Ensure costumes do not restrict movement, breathing, or vision.
• Avoid small accessories that pets might chew or swallow, leading to choking or intestinal blockages.
• If your pet seems stressed by the costume, it’s best to skip it altogether.

3. Create a Safe Space from Visitors and Noises
• Frequent doorbell rings or loud parties can cause anxiety. Keep pets in a quiet room with familiar toys or bedding.
• Play white noise or calming music to drown out the sounds of trick-or-treaters.

4. Outdoor Safety
• Keep pets inside to avoid accidental injury or pranks. Unfortunately, black cats are sometimes targeted on Halloween, so they should stay indoors during the festivities.
• Ensure pets wear an updated ID tag or are microchipped in case they escape.

🎃 Following these precautions will help your furry friends stay healthy and happy through Halloween! If anything unusual happens, seek veterinary help right away.

🍫 Happy National Chocolate Day! 🍫

While we love indulging in chocolate, it’s important to remember that what’s sweet for us can be dangerous for our furry friends!

Chocolate contains theobromine, which can be toxic to dogs, cats, and other pets.

Watch out for signs of chocolate poisoning:

• Vomiting or diarrhea 🤢
• Increased breathing or heart rate 💓
• Restlessness or tremors 😨

If you suspect your pet has ingested chocolate, contact your vet immediately! 🏥🐾

Let’s keep the celebrations fun and safe for everyone!

🐇🌿 Rabbit Care Tip of the Day! 🌿🐇

Did you know that a rabbit’s diet should consist of 80% hay? High-quality grass hay like timothy, orchard, or meadow keeps their digestive system moving smoothly and helps wear down their teeth! 🥕

Bonus Tip: Avoid overfeeding pellets or sugary treats like fruits—they’re cute but can lead to weight gain or digestive issues!

Keep your bunny happy and healthy by checking their water bottle or bowl daily, and remember to offer safe chew toys to prevent boredom. 🐰💚

🐾 Why Wellness Exams Matter for Your Pet’s Health 🐾

Routine wellness exams are more than just a quick check-up—they’re essential for keeping your furry friend happy and healthy! Here’s why these visits are so important:

1️⃣ Prevention is Key: Early detection of health issues can prevent small problems from becoming big ones. Regular exams help catch things like dental disease, obesity, or heart issues before they progress.

2️⃣ Personalized Care: Each pet is unique! Wellness exams allow your vet to tailor advice on diet, exercise, and care specific to your pet’s age, breed, and lifestyle.

3️⃣ Vaccines and Parasite Control: Staying up to date on vaccinations and parasite prevention ensures your pet is protected from harmful diseases.

4️⃣ Monitor Changes: Pets age faster than humans, and their health can change quickly. Wellness exams track your pet’s weight, behavior, and overall condition over time, making it easier to spot subtle changes.

5️⃣ Strengthen Your Bond: Regular visits to the vet make the experience less stressful for your pet, building trust and keeping them comfortable in medical settings.

Your pet’s health and happiness depend on proactive care. Schedule a wellness exam today—because a healthy pet is a happy pet! 🐶🐱

Today is - a day we educate about the importance of healthy lifestyles for our pets.

Unfortunately more than 50% of the pet population is overweight! A healthy weight can reduce your pet’s risk of disease and injury giving them the best chance of a happy and long life.

Reach out to your veterinarian to help determine whether your pet’s weight is healthy. If your pet is overweight we can help develop a weight management plan.

Let’s talk about hairballs! Many people believe that cats vomiting hairballs is a “normal” behavior, but this is not the case. When a cat grooms themselves, the hair gets stuck on the barbs of the tongue and is swallowed. In a healthy cat, the hair will go through the intestinal tract and be excreted.

The only exception can be seen with long haired cats, since cats in the wild have short hair. A healthy long haired cat’s gastrointestinal tract may not be able to handle large amounts of long-hair, so it is extremely important to brush long haired cats.

Hairballs can develop because of:
- Over-grooming due to stress, anxiety or pain.
- Intestinal motility problems such as inflammatory bowel disease
- Skin diseases
- Abdominal pain
- Urinary tract disease
- Joint disease

To determine the cause of hairballs, your veterinarian will likely need to perform diagnostics to rule out underlying diseases. It is better to find out the underlying cause of the problem rather than just treat the symptoms. Increased brushing, activity, and possibly a change to their diet could help make your cat more comfortable.
