We are ready to announce our next breeding project! We are turning our focus on... DALMATIANS! Dalmatians are such a beautiful breed that have been used for SO many things- hunting, protection, alerting (aka firehouse alarm), and so much more!
Dalmatians have a bad reputation though. They are known to have behavioral issues. This is due to the release of "101 dalmatians," in the 1990's. Sadly, when this movie was released, the breed became popular and many breeders bred dalmatians improperly, causing many behavioral issues. They were in**ed at this time, and quickly bred to keep up with the high interest. Sadly, it backfired and caused dalmatians to get a bad reputation now due to improper breeding.
We have been researching this breed and learning all about their genetics in order to ensure that we are breeding only the best of the best. We have thoroughly screened the breeders that we will be getting ours from and are doing PLENTY of health tests on the dogs before they are bred in our program. We also test all our adults to make sure they are not heavily related. We have a goal of less than 3% relation between our dalmatians- which is incredibly hard to achieve.
There are two types of dalmatians- HUA and LUA. HUA stands for "high uric acid." LUA stands for "low uric acid." Dalmatians who are HUA are more prone to kidney & bladder stones, and need a low purine diet. There are plenty of dog food companies that offer that diet, and you can even make your own food! LUA Dalmatians do not need the special diet, and are much less likely to form kidney/bladder stones. LUA Dalmatians typically have fewer spots, while HUA dalmatians have a higher amount of spots. We will be only producing LUAs for now, but we will also be playing with genetics to try to get a higher amount of spots.
Our dalmatians will come in three colors- white with black spots, white with liver (brown) spots, and white with tri-colored spots! 75% of the puppies we will produce will be white with black spots. We will also produce a small amount of white with liver (brown) spots dalmatians, and a even smaller amount of tri-colored dalmatians. Tri-colored dalmatians are incredibly hard to find, especially from a breeder who focuses so heavily on behavior and does so many health tests on the adults.
We will not be having any dalmatian litters until 2026 due to accumulating well bred puppies and being on waiting lists to get well bred puppies. We won't get our first breeder until December of this year.
We are so excited to start this project and to change the reputation dalmatians have from aggressive to family friendly!
And remember, no matter what breed you end up getting, SCREEN YOUR BREEDERS! Ask questions, have phone calls, get to know your breeder. Look at all the training they offer in their program. It could help you get a really great puppy, even if It costs a little bit more money.
