Dalmatians need a lot of exercise. We went to a park, and let them off leash. They ran around for about a hour. It was so nice to see them have so much room to run around in. We had the whole park basically to ourselves and these dogs LOVED it!
If you are considering getting a Dalmatian, please understand that they need a lot of exercise. After running around this park for a hour, they still have enough energy to play with each other at home too. If you love to hike, a dalmatian would be your best hiking buddy!

I personally LOVE her eye make up. She is 11 weeks old, and is officially 14lbs! Just for reference, Hiccup was 18lbs at 12 weeks old. Embers estimated adult weight is between 55-65lbs. Isn't she pretty 🤭

Dalmatians are LITERALLY addicting. They have such big personalities. Theres a little about the personalities we have learned from these two:
Hiccup: he loves to play. He wants so much attention but also wants to make you happy. He has so much energy that he will throw himself at you to show his love. He loves exploring! But the most important thing to him is food. If you give him food, you will be his new best friend.
Ember: she could care less about food. She likes to play too but she also loves to just cuddle. Even though she is smaller than Hiccup, she is not afraid to tell him to knock it off, especially when she doesn't want to play. She also loves Hiccup though. She is a little onry, but we think that might just be the puppy in her.
Together, their puppies will be *chefs kiss*. I'm excited to see more from these two as they grow!

Did you know Dalmatians are high energy?
They get bored easily, so a quick walk around the block isn't typically enough for them. They love to run and chase.
"A member of the non-sporting group, Dalmatians are a dignified and reserved breed. They can be standoffish with strangers, but are loyal and loving with their owners. Dalmatians were originally bred to guard horses and coaches, so they can be pretty protective by nature." - AKC.org
Due to this, they need plenty of socialization as a puppy, and also need a ton of exercise. They would be a great dog to take with you on hikes, or walking around.
Here in Iowa, it was over 60°F yesterday, so we took the dogs to a field. We were there for about 45 minutes, running around.
Hiccup is old enough to need a leash when outside, while Ember is young enough to still follow all of us around. Due to this, we got Hiccup on a 30ft least to experiment as to whether or not it would be helpful.
I LOVE the 30ft leash! I thought it would get tangled super easily, but I haven't had any tangles yet, and used it a few times. Hiccup can run about as free as he wants. I also found options for 50ft, 75ft, and even 100ft leashes, but I didn't think Hiccup & Ember needed that long of a leash. 30ft seems to work great with Hiccup. I definitely recommend for dogs who need to run around, but don't have a fenced in area to do so in.
As soon as Ember is older, we will start using the 30ft leash with her when in a field. We are currently leash training her, so while we walk to the field or walk home, she is clipped to a short leash. She is getting the hang of it!

I can't get over the fact that Hiccup is literally getting trained on HOW TO CUDDLE because he just doesn't relax, while Ember only wants to cuddle and take naps. The dramatic differences are perfect for the family 🤣
Also, when she naps, she finds things to cover her eyes. If she can't find anything, she uses her paws!

Today, we finally traveled down to the Kansas City area to a beautiful dog show to meet Embers breeder- Ruffles, Ridges, & Spots . Savannah Bowman introduced herself. I enjoyed finally meeting her! She got to meet the CRAZY Hiccup.
Hiccup was not fond of the idea of entering into a building with a bunch of people and dogs until he realized that people would give him attention since it's rare to see dalmatians... And I think someone even gave him some pork from their sandwich just because he found them while they were eating it. After that, he was greeting EVERYONE. 🤦‍♀️🤣
I met a few of Savannah's other dogs, and really was shocked at how well behaved they were. I found a new love for Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and also realized that Poodles are so soft if they are properly groomed. I also haven't met many poodles in my day, so maybe I just never realized that.
I got to meet a couple older Dalmatians and I do have hope that Hiccup might *one day* calm down enough to walk without looking like a absolute goofball! 😅
But, most importantly, we got Ember! She is the perfect fit to our family. She isn't afraid to tell Hiccup to bug off, and when he doesn't listen, she just finds a place that she is still small enough to get into, but Hiccup can't 🤣 She has made it UTTERLY clear that the kennel is not going to be her place of sleep, and that a human bed is MUCH more comfortable.
Anyways, here's Ember! Our AKC registered female dal!

COI is something that some breeders don't pay very much attention to, but I believe with dalmatians that it is something that should be considered in order to breed sound dalmatians.
Dalmatian genetics are very complex, and due to that, finding an ethical breeder for them can be difficult- especially since Dalmatian breeders are so rare.
When I decided to switch breeds from Yorkie to Dalmatians, it took me almost a year to find a good dalmatian breeder, and then I had to wait another year to get a sound dalmatian stud. I wanted specific genetics, but I also wanted a puppy with a low COI pedigree.
Finding Ember also took about a year, and her genetics are great too. I wasn't as picky with Ember as I was with my male, because my male needed all the genetics in order to play with colors.
While looking for ethical breeders to get my breeder Dalmatians from, I met a lot of unethical dalmatian breeders. Seeing some unethical practices has made me shift certain perspectives I had when it comes to how I want to breed.
One of my main priorities is to attempt to have Dalmatians who have a less than 3% COI pedigree. So far, with Hiccup and Ember, I will be able to produce litters with a less than 1% COI. This is really exciting to me, because it is so rare to find a COI that low!

Let's not forget about the star, Hiccup!
We learned this week that ice is literally his favorite treat 🤣 I've been buying treats when all I needed to do was reach into the freezer. It's literally his favorite thing.

We currently are free feeding him, kinda, which will stop when he is closer to his adult weight. The vet told me he is getting PLENTY of food, but didn't want me to change our feeding schedule until he's closer to his adult weight. If anyone is interested, I could make a post later about the pros & cons of free feeding?

Did you know that 3 months old dogs are only at about 30% of their full body weight?
Hiccup weighed 21lbs on his 3 month bday... This boy is charging to weigh 70lbs 💀 absolutely massive!
He is going to have some of the prettiest babies 😍
In other news, I finally sent in his AKC DNA kit. They test for over 300 different diseases and genetic abnormalities that would cause us to not breed him. But, his breeder is a phenomenal breeder and I would be blindsided if he had any genetic issues. Especially since both of her dogs were clear.
Anyway, Enjoy this picture of Hiccup.

This page has changed A LOT, but we should do a introduction to us- the actual humans.
I'm Bekah, I basically run the page and do all the communication. If you are texting the page, I'm the one responding. My day job currently is a registered behavioral therapist. I work with autistic kiddos. I have always wanted to breed dogs, and Dalmatians have always been a interest of mine, but wasn't sure where to start, as it's so hard to find a ethical breeder. It's so important to do everything right with dalmatians- and not make a mistake. One mistake can be detrimental to the breed.
This is Jonny, my husband. He's a diesel machanic during the day. He helps and loves on all the dogs! He didn't have pets growing up, but he's always wanted a dog, so he LOVES this!
I used to breed Yorkies before having the Dals. If you scroll back far enough on this page, you'll see all the Yorkie pics. They were so fun, and def a good breed to start with.
Now, I'm completely diving in. Learning all about genetics, all about registrations, health tests- everything. I love this breed so much. And what they say is very true- once you get one Dalmatian, it turns into a obsession. 🤣 I love Hiccup and am so excited to get Ember! I also will try to take them to shows. A dream would be to get Hiccuphis AKC championship- but that's so far away. But, he does have the bloodlines of champions back in the '00s 🤣
