Meet our newest intake Poppy! We have been so extremely busy this past month at the sanctuary and we apologize for not keeping you all UTD on all of our adventures & journeys. We have had a lot of heartbreak since May and have lost many precious souls which we will share with you soon, but for now let’s celebrate the rescue of this babe! Great Pyrenees have a very purposeful, magnificent, double coat. Unfortunately, due to a debilitating illness, Annabella’s first mom could not care for her like Annabella needed towards the end of their time together. Annabella‘s extended family stepped in to help and quickly realized that Annabella‘s coat was so badly matted that it could not be saved and needed to be shaved. Typically after you shave down a double coat, it will not grow back the same. We dedicated the last year to giving her coat every chance possible to recover, with routine monthly visits to the beauty shop, change in diet, and supplements. Annabella’s protective layer of her coat never did recover. Even though she is a full-time/inside resident of the sanctuary, she was still struggling in the heat to go outside for her business meetings. We were also noticing an extreme lack of exercise from her not wanting to be outside because of the heat. We can always put a coat on her in the winter, but it’s been impossible to help her tolerate the extreme high temps. After consulting with a few professionals, it was decided to shave her down to provide her more comfort in the final stage of her life. Out of the 27 pigs that are current residents of FTA, our Cofounder and President, personally, physically provides all of the routine tusk and hoof maintenance needed for 25 of them. BUT Nestor & Gus must prefer Black Diamond Farriery and chose to wait for him. We also covered expenses for 2 recently rescued goats we found other sanctuary for. FTA is asking to help restore $200 spent on our spa day this past Wednesday. Please help us restore our saving so we can continue to provide all their special needs.

We want to share a sweet little story with you about the most adorable little family. But first off, in April of 2023 we were contacted by one of our favorite local vets about a little hen that someone brought in to have euthanized because of a leg deformity. Dr. Neal wanted to give this girl another chance and knew that we at FTA would give her all the love and affection she needed as well as the best chance possible for any recovery. Fast forward after several months of PT, sling therapy and extra vitamins daily Clementine had a full recovery! Although, during Clem’s recovery we were also asked to take in the absolute cutest little bantam who was thought to be a rooster and unfortunately was not allowed in “his” previous neighborhood. The family was heartbroken over needing to rehome little Poppy but ultimately had no choice. Heartwarmingly, during Clementine & Poppy’s quarantine period (in kennels approximately 10’ apart) they found themselves VERY intrigued with each other and desperately wanted to be near each other. After their isolation was up, Clementine still needing her own space because of her disability but we were able to let Poppy out to roam throughout the quarantine stall. Poppy immediately ran to Clem and paced constantly while crying desperately wanting in with Clementine. Cautiously, we let “him” in. “He” was so gentle and loving with Clem. They were instantly bonded and would never been seen less than 6” apart, EVER! Poppy was protective and Clem’s #1 cheer leader. After a few months, Clementine fully recovered, and Poppy started growing, and we realized pretty quickly. That Poppy was not a he… Poppy was a she!! Poppy’s previous humans loved “him” so much and would check in quite often to see how he was. We knew we had to give them opportunity to take their sweet little (allowed) hen back with their family ALTHOUGH… she and Clementine were now a package deal. You will rarely meet a woman with such bravery, compassion, dedication, devotion, and fierce love! She stands for purpose. Her voice is loud. Her advocacy is profound. We appreciate your patience while we grieve the loss of our precious Ruth. While we won’t ignore her obvious disabilities, it does not minimize our disbelief of her sudden loss. There will not be one day that goes by that we do not gain strength from the thoughts of her determination and resistance to being handicapped. We’re not quite sure if we have ever seen anyone with such perseverance. We hope Ruth continues to live in all of your hearts as she will never be able to escape ours. We want to thank everyone for all of your support and creating an opportunity for her to live the fullest life possible, no matter how short. You gave her the chance to live, love, loved, cherished and TO ROLL! She was blessed with a chance to feel like a “normal” lamb with her wheels and for that we are grateful beyond measure. Ruth’s suffering is over. She has been made whole and will now frolic through fields of amber. FTA will continue to advocate for Ruth and others like her, honoring her memory. We feel humbled by the opportunity to love her.
