Hello, yall! We're doing some learning here at Three Little Pigs Cavy Haven. The most popular question I have received since starting my rescue is "Why?" "Do guinge pigs really need 'rescuing'?" And my answer? Absolutely. The most common reason why a guinea pig would be surrendered, either to me, rehomed, or to a pet store, is due to incorrect gender identification of the guinea pig. MANY chain pet store employees are not taught how to properly gender a guinea pig. (This is nothing against those employees.) Due to this, and the ability for boars (male piggys) to breed as early as three weeks, babies often happen. As many pet owners know, more mouths to feed means more expenses, time and space. So here is an infographic with pictures (pic credit to WikiHow, but please do not use this website as a reputable source for guinea pig info) on how to safely identify the gender of your guinea pig.
Step One: Pick up your piggy, and give them a nose boop. (This step is easier with a yummy snack like kale or a carrot)
Step Two: Sit your piggy, belly facing away from you, either in your lap or on a flat surface in front of you. IT IS CRUCIAL that you help support your piggy so the curve of their back remains curved.
Step Three: Holding the piggy gently against your stomach or lower chest will help protect their back and make identifying much easier. If your piggy yells out, bites, or seems in pain, stop immediately and please take them to a vet for identification.
Step Four: With the index and middle finger on either side of the piggy's ge****ls, about a quarter inch above, supply light down ward pressure.
Step Five: Identify! If piggy is a boar, you will see the head of the p***s with light pressure. This might not happen right away, as positioning and pressure have to be worked on for the correct results. As long as piggy is happy and comfy, practice makes perfect! If piggy is a sow, you will see a "Y" shape and a lack of protrusion.
If you learn better visually, I will also link a video to Saskias LA Rescue's YouTube, which is a wealth of information about all things piggy. Happy Wednesday, peeps!
