Thankful Thursday! We are long overdue in recognizing the hard work of our summer students Charlotte and Jordyn. Both these lovely ladies have been willing to step up and help out in all aspects of the clinic during our busiest times. Please help us in saying thank you, and wishing them luck as they head off in a couple of weeks to continue their education!

A feel good way to start Monday! Recently, Otis came in to visit Dr. McAllister and the team when he was travelling as he was unfortunately not feeling very well. Poor Otis required a couple of visits to the clinic while here to try and get him back on track. His mom recently wrote in to say the following:

"After 24 hours on the meds you prescribed, he started feeling a lot better Friday afternoon and had his first small meal. We will consider your advice on different preventative/maintenance measures and have already discussed it with Jake who also agreed.

Thanks again for all your support. We are very grateful to you and your team! Attached a few pics of Otis in front of your office and eating his first meal on Friday...or should I say "inhale" his first meal."

We are so happy to have been a part of Otis' medical journey, and extra happy to hear he is doing much better! Thank you to his mom for allowing us to share his beautiful pictures and note!

As many of you are aware as of August 1, 2024 there will be new regulations for dogs entering the US, for any reason. We appreciate that this situation presents a lot of confusion. As of now it is best to monitor the website below for updates, as well as the CDC website. These guidelines are still fluid, and subject to change so it is important to check frequently.

Currently, the highlights of the regulations include that dogs are required to be at least 6 months of age and appear healthy on arrival; have a microchip in place which can be scanned with a universal microchip reader (or, if not the owner must provide a scanner which will read the microchip); a current rabies vaccination; the CDC import form filled out by the owner, and a veterinary examination and form filled out as well. Other requirements may be in place depending on each individual pets circumstances.

Please be aware as well that with the expected influx of people seeking veterinary appointments to meet the requirements for travelling to the states, we may not be able to accommodate last minute appointments, so planning ahead is very important to ensure your documentation is ready for your trip.

Lets Talk Ticks!

Charlotte County is considered to be high risk for tick borne disease, and we have plenty of ticks here as most people know! With milder winters we can see ticks all year round so long as the temperature is 4 Celsius or greater. Use of preventatives and monitoring for these pests on your pet (and yourself!) is essential to try and decrease the risk of disease.

*Ticks can spread Lyme and other tick borne disease once they have been attached to their host for 24-48 hours.

*There are some areas on your pet where tick attachment may be common and harder to detect so be sure to check the inside of the ears, under collars, near the eyelids, between toes and in the groin region.

*Tick sizes can vary depending on their life stage, and recent feedings. In the images below you can see just how small and challenging it can be to find the little ticks (this dog's almost blend in with his spots!), and others are larger to see.

*While Lyme disease is common in our area, Anaplasmosis is another tick borne disease which can cause similar signs and cases of this are on the rise. Anaplasmosis can cause lameness, lethargy, and fever, but unlike Lyme can also cause changes to the number of platelets circulating, vomiting, decreased appetite, and possibly but rarely neurological signs. This condition is spread by the same ticks responsible for the spread of Lyme disease but at this time no vaccination against this exists, and preventative medications are the best step you can take.

*Baseline testing for tick borne disease involves a small sample of blood to be taken, and is performed right in clinic, with results quickly available.

*It is NOT advisable to remove ticks by trying to smother them with things such as coconut oil, lotions, vaseline or other medications; nor should you burn them or try to use bare hands as they are delicate and may break. The best methods involve either use of fine tip tweezers or a "tick twister" which makes removing the tick in entirety easier.

*Not every preventative is right for every pet, with cats at risk of toxicity with certain products that are safe for dogs to use. Not all over the counter products are effective or safe either. If you have concerns about the type of medications used or what the best option might be for your pet please do not hesitate to call or stop in. Please note prescription medications do require the pet to have been seen within the year in order for it to be dispensed.

This is Molly after receiving laser treatment on her post-surgical incision to increase healing, reduce pain and inflammation.

What is laser treatment and how can it help your pet.

Here at Docs on the Bay we offer cold laser therapy to our canine and feline patients who experience acute and chronic pain, Arthritis, hip dysplasia, inflammation, wounds, tendonitis, infections, post surgical incision healing.

The subtle amount of non-thermal energy initiates the repair process and assists in the reduction of pain. The laser device simply initiates the natural healing process. The process does not involve heating of the tissue so there are no risks associated with tissue damage or otherwise.

You can call the clinic and discuss if laser therapy is right for your pet!
