Silver was on the smaller side and came to us as a "senior" proven buck. He consistently threw fast growing litters of 8-10 (and one time 21!) kits, and was safe to keep in the grow out pen as protection for his babies when they were weaned from their mothers.

Silver was also the "pet" of the Rabbitry. He would always come for pets and snuggles, and could easily be handled by the kids, and even picked up. Silver was a huge part of our lives and will be deeply missed by everyone here.

RIP sweet Silver ♡

We took time off this winter, to let our does relax, and set up some new run areas.

This is the grow out cage. The larger ones in this picture are about 10 weeks old, and getting ready for butcher at the end of July. The little guy in the middle is 2.5 weeks old! We also have three does nursing newborns in separate cages, for a total of FOURTY babies!

Brr!!! Temperatures here have reached into the -40's! (degrees Celcius).

But the rabbits are happy, healthy and thriving! Rabbits prefer the colder weather, and have no problem making it through cold snaps!

Later this evening, we plan to brave the cold (just temporarily) to process a couple of our grow outs.

This weekend we welcomed a new breeding buck to our rabbitry! This big boy is a Flemish Giant, and will be the father for most of our kits born this winter!

Unfortunately, newborn baby rabbits (kits) don't always survive. When we have runts, stillborns, or ones that freeze, we freeze them to be reused.

Many exotic pet owners, namely reptile owners, rely on healthy frozen kits to feed their beloved pets. We don't like anything to go to waste, so we also sell our lost kits to keep the cycle of life going ♡

Let's talk about rabbit meat!

Rabbit is exceptionally lean. Wild rabbit has almost zero body fat, and homegrown rabbit doesn't have much more! So as a long time protein source, it is NOT a great option for a growing family!

One of the ways that we deal with this nutrition issue, is to trade! Many people love rabbit! Many people are eager to try it! We eat rabbit about once a week, and the rest we try and trade!

As it is not possible to purchase wild game, we often trade for moose, elk, deer, bear and boar! We also trade pound for pound with people who offer chicken, beef, lamb, pork and other domestic meats.

All expenses in, our weekly meat budget is about $20!

***a 3 pound moose roast we traded for one rabbit!***

The outdoor colony got a much needed upgrade today! Fully wired on the bottom to prevent escape artists and unwelcome predators.

The entire floor was softened with sand, which also makes cleanings easier.

Oreo and her newly hopping litter were added to the colony today, to start socializing and weaning from mom. Tomorrow we will add the rest of the does to the colony to start breeding for winter kits.

Our best doe, Oreo, had 11 babies on Tuesday! Then her sister, Creamsicle, sadly passed away giving birth. So now Oreo has taken on her sisters 10 babies, for a total of 21!

While not ideal, we will be closely monitoring which babies are struggling and supplementing them with kittens milk. Oreo is also getting an unrestricted diet to help keep up with the demand of all those kits!

Did you know rabbitries are all run differently? The two main types are "colony" and "caged".

Colony refers to a set up where rabbits are all kept in a large pen together, allowed to "free breed" (or a buck is only placed in for certain periods).

Caged (while it sounds scary!) Is actually where rabbits are kept separate, to more carefully control breeding.

Here at Ladybug Mansion Rabbitry, we have a hybrid system! Our does who are resting are kept together in a large colony pen. Our bucks are kept separate from each other in spacious pens of their own. All of our "grow-outs" (to be used for meat), are kept in a large colony together with a buck until they are 6 weeks, and then a non-lactating doe until butcher. An adult is kept with them for protection from predators.

Did you know rabbit fur is 50% warmer than cotton?

These mama's have taken the summer off. Breeding for these does is put off until September, which means we will have (hopefully) 8 litters born in October.

Rabbits are designed for our cold Alberta winters. They prefer it. We do have a couple of does that do well in summer, so we breed them as "heat tolerant."

However! We did have a very adventurous buck who escaped for a day this week! Which means we will be keeping a close eye on these guys to make sure that if they appear to be pregnant, they will be moved to somewhere cooler!

Ladybug Mansion Rabbitry is a small, private operation, that produces meat rabbits and by-products. We pride ourselves on having a one-on-one relationship with each of our animals, ethical breeding, and being waste free. We use as much of our animals as possible, including fur, feet, and entrails. what we are unable to use, we repurpose into compost and nutrient soil!

We welcome questions and comments! We are very excited to start showing our daily process, to show how backyard meat rabbits can be a sustainable and rewarding practice!

This is Houdini! Clearly named for her expert escape tactics, she is also a very smart Doe, who knows that it's time to settle down on roaming and get ready for birth!

Rabbits are pregnant for about 30 days. Usually within 48 hours of giving birth, they will pull their chest hair out to create a bed, and adopt the labour stretch position!

Fresh bedding, cold water and food help her feel comfortable. I will make frequent checks through the evening and night to see how she's doing.

Hopefully by tomorrow, I will have an update for you, with some new baby bunnies (kits)!
