“Keep Austin Weird”...and keep Austin’s cats odd
Austin Odd Cats is a brand new rescue run by just one person: me! I’ve been rescuing and fostering special-needs cats for years now, and I thought, “why not just give this thing a name?” So, because I live in the great city of Austin, where our city’s motto is, literally, “Keep Austin Weird”, I thought -- let’s go with this theme.
Austin is a city full of animal-loving people. In fact, the world’s largest no-kill shelter is located right here in Austin, TX. We’re a city known for our wackiness and friendly culture. I love my home city, and I also love my fellow, weird Austinites who help make our community into the wacky, open, accepting, forward-thinking place we are. People in Austin love the weirdo cats, too. Here, a cat with one eye or three legs will get adopted out 5x faster than a “normal” cat. While that’s not exactly fair to the “normies”, it just goes to show you how compassionate Austin-area residents are. We love to keep things weird!
Austin Odd Cats is not yet a 501c3 non-profit, but we are indeed “non-profit”, or maybe we should call it minus-profit, ha. I rely on donations to care for the cats I take in, but most of our rescue’s funding comes out of my own bank account.
If there’s a special-needs cat who needs help, I’m there. I’ve adopted out cats from all over the world: Cairo, Dubai, etc. I’ve flown cats to forever homes all over the country. I’ve fostered over 600 neonatal kittens, from orphan newborns on up. I’m also a sucker for blind cats -- I have three of my own.
