Ho’ola is searching for a foster home to teach him all of his house manners to help increase his chances of adoption! He has an amazing temperament – loving, calm, and sweet, but much of our information is superficial and unknown; which is why we need to get him into a foster home to get solid information and training.

For more information on Ho’ola or to apply to foster, please contact Aloha Animal Outreach: https://www.facebook.com/AlohaAnimalOutreach

Ho’ola is:
*Hound dog-mix
*40lbs
*5 y.o.
*Good with all family members (young children unknown)
*Good with dogs (that he has met in his current rescue environment)
*Unknown with cats
*Up-to date on vaccinations & preventatives

Aloha Jess was adopted back in 2020 to an amazing family who continues to adore her and enjoy the journey of this life with her.

Because Aloha Jess continues to get visits and views, I'd like to post dogs on O'ahu who are having a difficult time finding a Rescue on the island that will accept them in their already full line-up ... and therefore miss the marketing and potential fosters and adopter.

These dogs listed from here on are not living in homes. They are living outdoors in cages and need fosters or fosters to adopt!

Thank you for viewing, sharing, supporting!

Hope everyone is starting out their weeks well! Today we decided to scout out the Upper Makau Cave hike off of Kaneana on the west coast. We’ve read that it’s pretty overgrown and difficult to find the path and we also want to walk around and see if it would be a possible hike for Jess to tackle. The views looked great...looking forward to completing this one soon! ⛰

We took a quick trip into town to the Waikiki Aquarium and then to Ono Seafood. We decided to test Jessie out on her own in the house since we wouldn’t be too long out and her Kongs were prepared! 🤦🏻‍♀️ girl likes a pistachio!

Eeekkkk.... how cute is this homeless puppy that Jessie and I got to play with for a couple of hours before driving her to the vet for PAWS of Hawai’i?!?!

Jessie did really great! She was interested in her... smelling her, relaxed, tail wagging. After checking her out, I gave Jessie her Kong and she gave her attention to the treat instead. Super excited with her actions!

This little puppy will be looking for an adopter!!

The teenagers arrived for the summer on June 1st. It was the same day that Jessie was getting her second heartworm injection-and third the following day- so it was absolutely the worst time for new people to arrive for her to meet.

Jessie and I spent most of first two days away from the boys in another room since she was hurting and not happy from the stressful day and injections. We spent the 3-4th days letting them inhabit the same space for longer periods and allowing Jessie to inspect, smell, and move around them to get food, go to the bathroom, drink water...the essentials. The boys were not allowed to walk past her, look at her, touch her, or even acknowledge her existence.

For me and my partner it was a 24-hour warm-up period, but since it was two young folks and she had a couple of tough days, we have really drawn out the process (which is still continuing). Today is the 5th day and Jessie is really excited to see them, wants their affection, and is following simple commands from them.

I’m super proud of her (not surprised-I knew she’d be fine) and super proud of the boys for consistently being mindful of the ground rules for Jessie and just where she is located in the room, her demeanor, and her feelings as a whole.

This morning Jessie got into trouble for going through the trash so I put her out back to think about what she had done while I put the trash back.

She thought she would make amends by gifting me a bird when I opened the door for her. 😒😔

We had a mini memorial for the bird and laid it to rest under a flowering bush. I hope our cemetery doesn’t get any bigger!

She may not be as mournful as she should be...maybe still a little too proud of herself.

Jessie had her third (and hopefully final) Immiticide injection for her heartworm yesterday. It was a couple of VERY uncomfortable and stressful days, but she powered through.

We go back in one month to do another heartworm test to see if we were successful in eradicating her heartworm! 🤞

Jessie came to us as an emergency foster. We were not originally the ideal home, being that we had a miniature Dachshund and a cat, and the original shelter felt she was aggressive towards small animals. We did have the ability to keep them all separate and she absolutely needed a place for her neck to heal safely and without injury or infection.

🐕🐈💚With some time and slow introductions... these two b***s became the best of friends! 💙🐕🐈

“As Yoda sagely said, ‘Do, or do not. There is no try.’ Engineering your dog’s environment for safety is essential and preventing bites is critical. Training takes time, and good management gives dogs an opportunity to change their behavior patterns.”

While training in new situations and unknown environments, we are making sure that Jess cannot get spooked and have the opportunity to snap at anyone so we have been working on muzzle-training. Her training started with using her muzzle much like a Kong... enjoying frozen canned food as a daily snack.

28 March 2020: The day Jessie arrived in foster care! There was very little information about her other than she seemed aggressive towards small animals at the shelter, did not like eye contact, and was skittish.

We decided to set her up outside on the back patio at first, since there is a miniature dachshund and dog-lovin' cat in the foster home while we evaluated her and the situation.

She was really upset in the crate when the volunteer transporters dropped her off; so much so, that they had to use leashes to carry the crate because they couldn't chance their fingers in the crate grates.

We had a bed and food and water dish set-up on the back patio. We opened the door of her crate so she could do as she pleased and just sat outside talking for a while.

Within minutes she was out and timidly checking out the environment and drinking water.

Once she was allowed to spend some time outside on her own, I came back out and sat down, being careful to not make eye contact and to pay no real mind to her, just chatting. She would come by me and smell me. By the end of the night she decided that she felt comfortable enough to wag her tail, jump up for some petting, and allow me to touch her.

Jessie’s Backstory

Aloha! Thank you for visiting Jessie’s page. Jessie an adoptable Shiba-Inu mix through PAWS of Hawai’i. She has had a long and bumpy journey to get to where she is today, and still has a long journey ahead of her, but the future looks bright! She is currently with a foster family in Waianae while she heals both physically and mentally, and begins her training and socialization. We invite you to follow her journey, apply to adopt her, send advice and well-wishes, and help with any medical/training fundraisers.

Jessie’s Backstory: Jessie was found on Kamehameha Highway on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. It took multiple good samaritans almost an hour with stopped traffic to catch her. They could see that she had a severe neck injury, but what it turned out to be was a large chain that had cut deeply into her neck. Jessie was taken to Ka’a’awa K9 Rescue that day (Saturday, March 21). The veterinarians at Aloha Affordable Animal Clinic were able to get her into surgery on Sunday to remove the chain and close up her neck. Due to the heavy rains, flooding, and her anxiety, Jessie’s neck wound was not healing properly and beginning to reopen and the skin to necrotize. Ka’a’awa was concerned about infection without constant watch and a proper environment to heal from such a big surgery, so contacted PAWS of Hawai’i to see if they could take her and find a foster. Ku’ulei, the Executive Director of PAWS of Hawai’i, jumped on the phone and found Jessie a foster as well as took over the vetting, long-term responsibility, and the vast bills associated with Jessie.

Jessie has since had to have her neck surgery corrected to cut off the necrotized skin and redo the stitches, been spayed, received all yearly vaccinations, been diagnosed with heartworm, and started treatment for heartworm.

While in foster care, Jessie’s family is working daily on socializing her to other animals, men, women, and children along with general training.
