In April of 2003 Foster Parrots received an urgent call from a local humane shelter. They had space and accommodations for only one large parrot. They were currently holding one Blue and Gold Macaw, but were faced with a crisis when a macaw they had previously adopted out was being returned. The shelter either had to find placement for one of the macaws – or make the decision to euthanize the one who was proving to be a challenging adoption candidate.

Wild-caught, poorly socialized, and sans feathers, Isabella was welcomed into the Foster Parrots flock.

It can take a little time for a new bird to get their bearings in the lively environment of the sanctuary. Isabella was a shy and thoughtful observer of all of the activity and interactions between birds and people around her. Before long, though, it became clear that her preference was for humans – particularly certain women – rather than for other parrots. She began to form friendly bonds with very special volunteers and staff members.

Though somewhat timid and quick to assert her personal boundaries, Isabella’s gentle nature and desire to avoid conflict has enabled her to live a cage free life among the other macaws for the past 20 years. Recently, Isabella opened herself up to avian companionship in a new way. She began sharing her space with Oakley, another human-oriented longtime resident of Foster Parrots, and they’ve developed a beautiful friendship over the last few years!

Meet Charlie, one of our beloved Blue and Gold Macaws.

Charlie arrived as a stray to the sanctuary several years ago. He was found in a tree in a residential area, frightened, and unable to be rescued until he succumbed to hunger and fell. Because he was brought in as a stray, we do not know his gender, age, or history.

Charlie was extremely anxious and terrified of people when he initially arrived. He has come a very long way in his time with us, and is even comfortable leaving his cage to stand on his door or on a perch.

He has been noted to befriend the macaws on either side of his cage, and will show interest in those on perches near him when on a tree stand outside of his cage. He also loves to talk to people and will even play peek-a-boo behind a toy!

He is still unsure of people, though he will step onto a perch. We have yet to see him trust someone enough to step on to their arm or hand When prompted, he typically will fly off of his cage and run away. He will need an owner who is very patient and willing to wait until he is ready to be handled.
