A Russian rat snake female who doesn’t get near the attention of our male. She’s much more timid and prefers to stay hidden. I have never noticed the red coloration within her bands until now. I assume this will go away with age as her yellows come through.

Three localities of Baird’s compared side by side show how different they are even as juveniles. The W. Nueces R. (Edwards, Kinney, Uvalde) animals are notably lighter and more colorful compared to the darker toned animals within the western range of the Davis Mts (Jeff Davis). Lastly, the Nuevo Leon animals, while seemingly quite similar, are already showing a hint of orange/yellow tones that will continue until they look like a completely different snake. All this said, there is still quite a bit of variation in each locality.

1-3: West Nueces River
4-6: Davis Mountains
7-9: Nuevo Leon, Mexico
