Honey (formerly Hunni) was found at the dump in late August, 2024. She was dumped there after the fire, and after a few attempts, we were able to catch her and bring her into our care. She’s a cuddly, lovable cat who would be perfect as an indoor pet. Would you like to give this sweetie a home?

– date of birth: July 2024?
– taken in: 8 September, 2024
– sterilized / vaccinated
– good with other cats
– possibly good with friendly dogs and older kids
– could be indoor only

Šime (the Dalmatian equivalent of Simon) was abandoned at the end of tourist season. We don’t know anything about his past, but he’s completely dependent on people and we doubt he would do well on his own. He’s calm and initially reserved, but once he gets to know you, he becomes very affectionate. Very sensitive and sensual, all he wants to do is lie next to his human or another cat.

Šime knows how to use a litterbox and could live entirely indoors if necessary, but he loves to be outdoors too, exploring the neighbourhood. If you’re looking for a loving companion, Šime could be the perfect cat for you.

Malika was found abandoned at the dump with her kittens. We suspect this wasn’t her first litter, and are appalled that people can throw cats out like garbage.

Thankfully, Malika and her kittens thrived in our care and are now ready for forever homes!

Photos show Malika when we took her in, and more recently.

Gabbi was abandoned in the trash at the Vis open-air dump. On the very first day we saw her, we noticed how friendly she was and took her out of there immediately. This is why monitoring colonies is useful: you can spot the newcomers.

After a short period in quarantine during which she was sterilized and vaccinated, she was able to join the colony on our land, where she’s lived ever since. Because she’s used to having unlimited space to roam, we hope she can find a home with a big, safe yard.

She can seem a bit wary at first because she’s been bullied by a couple other cats in the colony, but once she gets to know you she’ll give you cuddles galore! Gabbi’s a lover, not a fighter. Would you like to give her a forever home?

We first saw Liv begging for food outside a supermarket in Komiža. She was very underweight, missing most of her fur, and had a severe upper respiratory infection. Several local people tried to help her with antibiotics and by ensuring she had plenty of water available, as they realised she needed to drink a lot.

Despite all their efforts, she was still struggling to survive on the street. We brought her in and took her to the vet, where it was discovered she had FIV as well as a kidney problem, which has been treated. She also has a heart murmur and an enlarged heart. In spite of all this, she’s not showing any signs of ill health. She still needs to drink a lot, but her blood test results are normal. Once she’s chosen for adoption, we’ll check the blood results again and do ultrasound and x-rays to check her current condition.

Liv is healthy, playful, quiet, and gentle, and gets along well with other cats. Could you make space for her in your heart and home?

Mate Mišo is a friendly and easygoing cat, always in good mood. He’s a born entertainer who loves to play with other cats, and a fearless hunter. He loves toys, his favorite ones being big rats. He strongly prefers using his indoor litterbox, but can go outside as well. His fur is silky and shiny, and he loves to be stroked. Would you like to welcome this sweetie into your heart and home?

Prin was born and raised on a very busy road where his mother and one of his siblings lost their lives, hit by cars. Prin’s fate was different: he was savagely attacked (by a dog, we think) and his tail was bitten so badly that it had to be amputated. He suffered extensive nerve damage and had a long road to recovery, first at the vet’s, then on our land. It took months before he could walk normally again, but now he gets around just fine, albeit without a tail.

Prin currently lives in a colony with many other cats, but he’s struggled to find his place. In the early days, he was easily bullied and chased away, but over time he’s become more confident and now holds his ground. We think he might enjoy being the only pet in your household, but he could probably adapt to another cat if the introduction were done slowly. If you’d like to adopt him with another cat from our land, we’ll find you a good match.

Because white-eared cats are susceptible to skin cancer, it would be best for Prin to live mostly indoors, avoiding bright sunshine. Do you live in a gloomy climate? Perfect! If you have a catio, that would be a plus. Prin isn’t cuddly, but he deserves a loving home after all he’s gone through. Once he gets to know you, he’ll be a loyal and attentive companion.

– date of birth: June 2020?
– taken in: September 2022
– sterilized / vaccinated
– could work as a single cat
– indoor-outdoor but no bright sunshine

Koffi lives at the Vis rubbish dump, the most extreme of the colonies we care for. He was surely abandoned, because when we met him at around six months old, he was relatively friendly, meaning he must have gotten some socializing as a kitten.

While he seems perfectly healthy, Koffi’s FIV status is unknown. We haven’t been able to take him indoors to see how he does using a litter box, but judging from how friendly he is, we think he’ll adapt just fine.

He’s used to having a large territory in which to roam, so if he’s FIV negative, we want his forever home to have plenty of safe outdoor space. If he’s FIV positive and can’t be free outdoors, we want him to at least have a large catio.

He enjoys attention without being overly needy, and gets along well with other cats. It may take time to win his trust, but once you do, you’ll really enjoy his gentle, interactive personality.

If you’re interested in giving this handsome and lovable boy a home, we’ll do all the necessary work to get him ready, including (of course) an FIV test, vaccines, and indoor socializing.

Luka is a playful, lovable cat. His left eye has been a bit wonky ever since he was a kitten, but seems to be improving over time. Luka is lonesome, though, and needs to find a forever home where he’ll have a playmate. Could he be the cat of your dreams?

Just because something has always been done doesn’t make it right. People of Vis, dumping cats is uncivilized, heartless and cruel. The only humane way to control the cat population is to spay and neuter. Our local governments offer us this service for free for any street cat on the whole island, so let’s take advantage of that! Please contact us if you need help.

After five years of growing as a small personal project, this year Street Cats of Vis finally made it official. We became an udruga — that's the Croatian term for a non-profit organization. There's a lot of paperwork involved, but being an udruga opens up more opportunities for support.

09/09/2024

Are you visiting Vis and falling in love with our street cats? Are you tempted to feed them? We think this is fine: the cats will surely love the extra food and attention. Here are some best practices so you don’t upset the cats or the local humans.

Residents complain when tourists dump food randomly on the sidewalk. If cats don’t eat it all, you’re leaving a mess for residents to clean up. Not good! What’s the fix?

Don’t just dump and run: take responsibility for whatever street cats you’re feeding for the duration of your stay. Find some small containers to leave food and water, set these in a discreet location, and never leave too much food (you can never leave too much water).

Keep food off the ground if possible, so dogs don’t eat it. A low wall or other raised area would be best.

It’s also a good idea to pick up whatever food isn’t eaten and take the food container back for a wash until next time you use it. And don’t forget to freshen the water!

If you happen to meet whoever the local caretaker is, maybe you could find out if they approve of your feeding. Remember that you’re just a temporary visitor in an established ecosystem.

If you think a street cat is sick or injured and in need of help, contact us at [email protected] or on social media to let us know about the situation.

Please don’t take a cat into your accommodation unless you intend to adopt it. For one thing, it may already have a local caretaker, and also, it will be disoriented when you leave.

Most importantly, think of what will happen once you leave Vis, when the cats have become accustomed to your feeding. You could let us know where you’ve been feeding and make a donation towards year-round care.

Thank you for helping us help cats!

Helping people help cats

Street Cats of Vis helps people help cats on the island of Vis, in Croatia. There is currently no vet on the island, but funding was recently granted for the sterilization of Vis street cats. There is still no government funding for the treatment of sick and injured street cats. If you’d like to help, you can go to https://donorbox.org/street-cats-of-vis.
