Great tips from Pet Harmony! We believe that meeting a dog’s needs through enrichment can help prepare them for adoption.

There are going to be times when we need to help our pets calm down, regulate, and be ready for more restful and relaxing activities.

Or there may be times when your pet needs to slow it down for their physical health.

Or we need them anchored in a spot quietly instead of rolling their Kong Wobbler into the wall and knocking over furniture while we’re on a call.

The first step to figuring out which enrichment activities are calming for your pet is to observe for the activities that your dog does either while already resting, or while shifting from active time to restful time!

Use this infographic as a starter but remember to trial and evaluate different activities for the best results!

Most people expect small dogs to make easy pets. The truth is, all dogs are individuals — and sometimes, big personalities come in small packages! At GLDR, we provide transitional support to dogs of all shapes and sizes (and their humans) to make sure everyone ends up happily ever after as intended.

Coogan was rescued from Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) last year and quickly showed us that she had plenty of pep and pizzazz to keep her caretakers on their toes. At just 10 lbs and 6 years old, she bonded quickly to her people but had big feelings towards other dogs when on leash and was a professional escape artist to boot.

Callie and her fiancé had just started their adoption search and were looking for a small dog who could get along with Meatball, the 19-lb resident cat, and enjoy trips to see their family in Long Island. Lucky for Coogan, they had experience with dogs who lunge and bark on leash and were ready to roll up their sleeves and do some positive reinforcement training! With a little help from Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, Inc. trainer Hanna Fushihara at , we made sure they had the necessary tools and guidance to navigate slow introductions to the family pets as a gradual foster-to-adopt process…and eventually, the rest was history!

“Coogan has quickly and easily become a part of our family. We love getting to see her learn and experience new things everyday and to provide her the love and patience she deserves. She brings so much happiness to us and everyone she meets, including our cat! We are endlessly grateful to the GLDR for bringing her into our lives and for providing support and advice throughout the process. One might call Phoebe "Cookies and Cream" based on her beautiful coloring. If you are looking for a large lap dog, Phoebe is your girl. She is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and up to date on all her vaccines.

🦋 This social butterfly's favorite activities include:

👀 Making eye contact with human.
🤗 Convincing humans to give her a pet.
😍 Mesmerizing humans so much that they sit down wherever they are, providing her a lap to lay in (check out her pictures!).

This pretty girl is still learning how to play with other dogs, but she is currently being fostered with a male dog and doing well! She does best with larger, mellow dogs and we learn more and more about this lovely girl each day.

From The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center: Upcoming Children's Program

This summer break, the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center will be hosting its free online children’s program once again! In this week-long experience, children will have the chance to meet real veterinarians while learning how they care for animals. Each day focuses on a new topic and includes a fun activity children can do right in their own home! We are hosting two sessions this summer break:

Session I: July 15th – 19th from 2:00pm - 3:30pm
Session II: August 19th - 23rd from 11:00am - 12:30pm
The program runs Monday to Friday and is for children ages 8-10. This online program will be hosted via Zoom and the at-home activities will require common arts & craft materials.

This program is free to register but space is limited and is on a first come, first served basis. The July & August sessions are the same program, so please only register your child for one session this summer.

It can be hard to let go of the way others perceive us. Hard to brush off an unkind comment.

So much of our anxiety around our dog’s behaviour comes from the judgments of others and what society expects from us.

Letting go is easier said than done. But you show up every day for your dog, make a difference to their life. And set an example to those watching. Even if they aren’t ready to see it yet.

This , we’re celebrating dogs like Cherry! 🍒 Rescued from a local shelter partner, watching this sweet girl go from kennel to couch is the stuff we live for - even if it’s come with a few hiccups!

At the shelter, Cherry tested positive for heartworm.🐛 She completed the months-long treatment process, but then her microfilaria test came back positive and threw an unexpected and unpredictable wrench into her journey.

This week, she’ll pay a visit to our friends at Worth Street Veterinary Center to see if the additional treatments we’ve given have cleared her infection for good.

Update on our girl, Wanda! After a recent visit to Veterinary Eye Center, it turns out that she has cataracts and is near-sighted. No wonder her barking had us so puzzled! Sometimes, she'll bark until people get closer—likely mistaking them for shadows.

But let us tell you, Wanda's spirit is unstoppable! Despite her challenges, she's been spreading joy and making friends all over Upper Manhattan. 🏙️ If you're searching for a beautiful lady with a heart of gold 100% worth a bit of extra care, Wanda might just be your perfect match. 💖

When it comes to rescuing dogs, GLDR loves to support pets, people, and shelters right here in our NYC community. Our newest (and oldest) rescue dog is a perfect example of the amazing companions we can help through these partnerships. Meet O’Henry!

We met O’Henry during a visit to the ASPCA , where he had been transferred from Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) after being surrendered by his previous owner. After a hilarious meet & greet with Jenn (which involved him ignoring her most of the time and then refusing to walk back to the shelter), we were smitten by his personality and knew we had to have him! He joined our foster program soon after, where he has settled in seamlessly.

So now it’s time to find this funny fella the retirement home of his dreams! O’Henry will be featured at this Saturday’s adoption event and would love to meet you! He loves leisurely strolls, sunbathing in the park, playing with the cats in his foster home, and flirting with all the other dogs in town. If you love a good couch potato and appreciate early-bird specials, look no further.

Hunter is growing fast— 30 lbs at just 4-5 months old.- and still available for adoption!

Currently, he is living with two adult dogs and one thinks he's pretty annoying, but the other loves to play and snuggle and enjoys his bitey puppy ways.

True to his breed, Hunter is looking for a life filled with adventure and stimulation. A perfect day includes playing with the flirt pole, practicing his skateboarding skills, and trying dock diving, scent work, or search & rescue work on for size. He's looking for love outside of NYC (where there are less things to scream feelings at) and when he's not practicing his high jump skills on the dining table, this baby gentleman is smart as a whip!

📣 Meet Wanda, adoptable bundle of joy with a heart of gold! 🌟 Found by a guardian angel, tucked beneath a car on a chilly morning, Wanda started her rescue journey with three broken toes, but her spirit remains unbreakable! 💪 Now, she's on the fast track to becoming the ultimate bestie for her future adopter. Here’s the scoop from her foster caregivers:

Thanks to everyone at Instinct Dog Behavior & Training Northern NJ who offered our sweet Wanda a modified participation in the weekly Puppy Learn + Play Class!

Since our little lady just had her splint taken off and isn’t quite ready for prime time, she was able to practice some manners, like staying in place and eating lots of yummy treats while other pups walked by.

You know what they say, it takes a village! And when dogs like Casper need a second chance, our village makes possible.

When his owner was hospitalized and could no longer care for him, a group of Good Samaritans in came together to keep him out of the shelter system. He landed in our foster program with Diane and next we called on our friends at Raise the Woof Dog Training and Worth Street Veterinary Center for support with training and veterinary care. After a little practice on his leash manners and an extensive dental procedure, Casper was ready to light up the room with his fresh smile — and Diane was ready to make him a permanent part of the family. 🥰

These are the lives that we can change together. Huge thanks to all of the faithful friends in our village, and to those who will join in to make a difference!

We love repeat adopters! In 2014, longtime supporter Christine introduced us to Betsy, who adopted a dog named Hudson. Last year, Betsy reconnected with us after Hudson’s passing and she was ready to find new love.

Enter Pippin, formerly known as Coda! A recent transfer from Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) who had landed safely in foster care with our go-to small dog lover — and Hudson’s former foster dad — Ignacio Ariza. Talk about meant to be!

Betsy traveled out to Flushing and fell in love with Pippin. With a little help from Worth Street Veterinary Center for neuter surgery and our very own Jennifer Bristol for a little coaching on leash training…the rest was history.
